Thai describes how often something happens with several constructions, not one freely movable class corresponding to English always, usually, often, and sometimes. ปกติ often frames a default, มัก(จะ) precedes a tendency, บ่อย ๆ follows an event, and เสมอ commonly closes the predicate. Their positions help determine what each expression modifies.
Frequency also encourages a habitual reading, but repetition and habit are not identical. เมื่อวานโทรมาสามครั้ง reports three calls in one day; โทรมาทุกวัน presents a recurring pattern. Thai verbs remain unchanged in both.
Learn each expression with its slot
The following patterns are productive in standard Central Thai.
| Meaning | Productive frame | Register and nuance |
|---|---|---|
| normally | ปกติ + clause | ordinary; default versus exception |
| usually/tends to | subject + มัก(จะ) + predicate | neutral to formal; tendency |
| often | predicate + บ่อย ๆ | ordinary conversation |
| always/consistently | predicate + เสมอ | neutral; common in careful speech and writing |
| regularly | predicate + เป็นประจำ | ordinary to formal; established routine |
| sometimes | บางครั้ง + clause | neutral; selects some occasions |
| not often | subject + ไม่ค่อย + predicate | ordinary; low frequency |
| every period | predicate + ทุก + period | neutral; explicit recurrence |
ปกติฉันซื้ออาหารกลางวันที่ร้านข้างสำนักงานค่ะ
pokkati chan sue ahan klang wan thi ran khang samnakngan kha
I normally buy lunch at the shop beside the office. (ordinary polite routine, female speaker)
พี่ชายผมมักจะกลับบ้านก่อนหกโมงครับ
phi chai phom mak cha klap ban kon hok mong khrap
My older brother usually gets home before six. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
ช่วงนี้เราเจอลูกค้าต่างชาติบ่อย ๆ ค่ะ
chuang ni rao choe luk kha tang chat boi boi kha
These days we often meet international customers. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
คุณอ้อยตอบข้อความเร็วเสมอครับ
khun oi top khokhwam reo samoe khrap
Khun Oi always responds to messages promptly. (ordinary polite assessment, male speaker)
Moving these words mechanically produces unnatural Thai. Learn มัก + predicate, but predicate + บ่อย/เสมอ. The broader adverb-slot guide explains why “adverb” is not one position.
Default, tendency, and observed frequency
Near-synonyms answer different questions. ปกติ identifies the default and invites a possible exception. มัก(จะ) describes a tendency. บ่อย ๆ says that occasions recur noticeably, without claiming a fixed schedule.
ปกติร้านเปิดเก้าโมง แต่วันนี้เปิดสิบโมงค่ะ
pokkati ran poet kao mong tae wan ni poet sip mong kha
The shop normally opens at nine, but today it opens at ten. (ordinary polite explanation, female speaker; default contrasted with exception)
ถ้าประชุมเช้า เขามักมาถึงก่อนเวลาครับ
tha prachum chao khao mak ma thueng kon wela khrap
When there is a morning meeting, he tends to arrive early. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; conditional tendency)
เดือนนี้ฉันต้องเดินทางไปต่างจังหวัดบ่อยค่ะ
duean ni chan tong doen thang pai tang changwat boi kha
This month I have to travel to other provinces often. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; high frequency within a limited period)
The last sentence need not describe a permanent habit. A busy month can contain frequent travel without making travel the speaker's normal routine. Conversely, an explicit schedule such as ทุกวันจันทร์ directly establishes recurrence even without บ่อย.
Explicit schedules and counted rates
ทุก + time period distributes the event across every relevant period: ทุกวัน, ทุกสัปดาห์, ทุกสิ้นเดือน. It may appear after the event or frame the clause initially when the schedule itself is the topic.
ทีมบริการตรวจอีเมลทุกเช้าค่ะ
thim borikan truat imel thuk chao kha
The service team checks email every morning. (formal-neutral routine, female speaker)
ทุกวันศุกร์ผมไปรับลูกที่โรงเรียนครับ
thuk wan suk phom pai rap luk thi rongrian khrap
Every Friday I pick my child up at school. (ordinary polite routine, male speaker; schedule frames the clause)
A counted rate requires ครั้ง: สามครั้งต่อสัปดาห์ or สัปดาห์ละสามครั้ง. The classifier counts event occasions; the period states the interval.
คุณหมอแนะนำให้เดินเร็วสัปดาห์ละสี่ครั้งค่ะ
khun mo naenam hai doen reo sapda la si khrang kha
The doctor recommends brisk walking four times a week. (ordinary polite health advice, female speaker)
Do not confuse frequency with duration. เดินสี่ครั้ง counts four walking occasions; เดินสี่ชั่วโมง measures four hours. See counting occurrences with ครั้ง.
Habit from context, without an overt frequency word
Once a routine frame is active, a bare predicate can inherit a habitual interpretation.
วันทำงานคุณตื่นกี่โมงคะ
wan tham ngan khun tuen ki mong kha
What time do you wake up on workdays? (ordinary polite question, female speaker; routine frame)
ตื่นหกโมงครึ่งครับ แล้วออกจากบ้านประมาณเจ็ดโมง
tuen hok mong khrueng khrap laeo ok chak ban praman chet mong
At six thirty, and then I leave home around seven. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; subject and habitual meaning recovered)
The reply does not repeat ผม, วันทำงาน, or a word for “usually.” The question supplies the actor and routine domain. This is licensed omission: in a new context, ตื่นหกโมงครึ่ง could instead describe one relevant day.
Low frequency, never, and not always
Thai keeps three useful negative meanings separate.
| Form | Meaning | Logic |
|---|---|---|
| ไม่ค่อย + predicate | not often / rarely | some occasions may exist |
| ไม่เคย + predicate | have never | no occasion in relevant experience |
| ไม่ได้ + predicate + เสมอไป | not always | the claim fails on some occasions |
| แทบไม่ + predicate | hardly ever | frequency approaches zero |
ผมไม่ค่อยดื่มกาแฟหลังเที่ยงครับ
phom mai khoi duem kafae lang thiang khrap
I don't often drink coffee after noon. (ordinary polite habit, male speaker)
ฉันไม่เคยพลาดรถเที่ยวแรกค่ะ
chan mai khoei phlat rot thiao raek kha
I've never missed the first bus. (ordinary polite experience claim, female speaker)
รถสายนี้ไม่ได้มาตรงเวลาเสมอไปครับ
rot sai ni mai dai ma trong wela samoe pai khrap
This bus does not always arrive on time. (ordinary polite assessment, male speaker)
ไม่ได้...เสมอไป leaves open that the bus is punctual on some days. ไม่เคย would deny any punctual arrival in the relevant experience, a much stronger claim. ไม่ค่อย normally precedes the predicate as one frequency-negation unit.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
Two coworkers discuss office attendance:
ปกติคุณมาทำงานที่บริษัทกี่วันต่อสัปดาห์คะ
pokkati khun ma tham ngan thi borisat ki wan to sapda kha
How many days a week do you normally come to work at the company? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
สามวันครับ ส่วนวันอื่นทำงานที่บ้าน
sam wan khrap suan wan uen tham ngan thi ban
Three days. On the other days I work from home. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; repeated subject omitted)
แล้วต้องพบลูกค้าบ่อยไหมคะ
laeo tong phop luk kha boi mai kha
And do you have to meet clients often? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
ไม่ค่อยบ่อยครับ ส่วนใหญ่ประชุมออนไลน์
mai khoi boi khrap suan yai prachum onlai
Not very often. Most meetings are online. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; event inferred from context)
Common Mistakes
1. Moving preverbal มัก to the end
❌ เขากลับบ้านดึกมักค่ะ
Incorrect—habitual มัก precedes the predicate it scopes over.
✅ เขามักกลับบ้านดึกวันศุกร์ค่ะ
khao mak klap ban duek wan suk kha
He often gets home late on Fridays. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
2. Putting บ่อย before the event like English often
❌ ฉันบ่อยไปตลาดหลังเลิกงานค่ะ
Incorrect neutral placement—บ่อย normally follows the event phrase.
✅ ฉันไปตลาดหลังเลิกงานบ่อยค่ะ
chan pai talat lang loek ngan boi kha
I often go to the market after work. (ordinary polite routine, female speaker)
3. Using the progressive for a standing routine
❌ ทุกวันจันทร์ผมกำลังประชุมกับทีมครับ
Incorrect for a standing weekly schedule—กำลัง presents one event as ongoing at a reference point.
✅ ทุกวันจันทร์ผมประชุมกับทีมช่วงเช้าครับ
thuk wan chan phom prachum kap thim chuang chao khrap
Every Monday I meet with the team in the morning. (ordinary polite routine, male speaker)
4. Using “not always” for “never”
❌ ผมไม่ได้เข้าประชุมกับทีมนี้เสมอไปครับ
Wrong for intended ‘I have never attended a meeting with this team’; ไม่ได้...เสมอไป means ‘not always,’ not ‘never.’
✅ ผมไม่เคยเข้าประชุมกับทีมนี้ครับ
phom mai khoei khao prachum kap thim ni khrap
I've never attended a meeting with this team. (ordinary polite experience statement, male speaker)
5. Omitting ครั้ง from a counted event rate
❌ เราฝึกพูดสามต่อสัปดาห์ค่ะ
Incorrect—the numeral needs the event classifier ครั้ง before ต่อสัปดาห์.
✅ เราฝึกพูดสัปดาห์ละสามครั้งค่ะ
rao fuek phut sapda la sam khrang kha
We practice speaking three times a week. (ordinary polite routine, female speaker)
Key Takeaways
- Learn frequency words with their natural positions: ปกติ + clause, มัก + predicate, and predicate + บ่อย/เสมอ.
- A frequency expression can create a habitual reading, but repeated events inside one occasion are not automatically a habit.
- ทุก + period states recurrence; counted rates also require ครั้ง.
- ไม่ค่อย, ไม่เคย, and ไม่ได้...เสมอไป distinguish low frequency, no prior occurrence, and “not always.”
- Omitted subjects and frequency markers are recoverable from an active routine frame, not absent from Thai grammar.
