Thai can place a property word directly after an action to describe its manner: เดินเร็ว “walk fast,” พูดดัง “speak loudly,” ตอบถูก “answer correctly.” The word does not acquire an ending and does not need อย่าง. Its position and compatibility with the action create the manner reading.
This compact pattern is especially common in ordinary speech. It is productive, but not automatic: speakers learn frequent action-property combinations, and some abstract manners sound clearer with อย่าง.
The core pattern
subject + action (+ object) + property (+ degree) + final particle
| Manner domain | Productive slot | Model |
|---|---|---|
| speed | action + เร็ว/ช้า | เดินเร็ว |
| volume | speech/action + ดัง/เบา | พูดเบา |
| accuracy | answer/do + ถูก/ผิด | ตอบถูก |
| quality | action + ดี/สวย | ทำดี / เขียนสวย |
| effort | work/study + หนัก | ทำงานหนัก |
| careful sustained manner | action + property + ๆ | อ่านช้า ๆ |
คุณนัทเดินเร็วมากครับ
khun nat doen reo mak khrap
Khun Nat walks very quickly. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; speed manner plus degree)
ช่วยปิดประตูเบา ๆ ค่ะ
chuai pit pratu bao bao kha
Please close the door gently. (ordinary polite request, female speaker; reduplicated manner)
นักเรียนคนนี้ตอบถูกทุกข้อครับ
nakrian khon ni top thuk thuk kho khrap
This student answered every question correctly. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; accuracy of answering)
No Thai equivalent of -ly appears. English changes correct to correctly, whereas Thai lets ถูก occupy the manner/result slot after ตอบ.
Minimal contrast: participant property versus action manner
The same form can describe a participant in one position and an event in another.
เด็กคนนี้เสียงดังค่ะ
dek khon ni siang dang kha
This child has a loud voice. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; participant-related property)
เด็กคนนี้พูดดังค่ะ
dek khon ni phut dang kha
This child speaks loudly. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; manner of speaking)
In พูดดัง, the action พูด creates an event for ดัง to characterize. Thai does not need a separate word class form equivalent to loudly. Linguists differ in how they label Thai property words, but learners can rely on the constructional contrast.
ลายมือของคุณมุกสวยมากครับ
laimue khong khun muk suai mak khrap
Khun Muk's handwriting is very beautiful. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; property predicate)
คุณมุกเขียนภาษาไทยสวยมากครับ
khun muk khian phasa thai suai mak khrap
Khun Muk writes Thai beautifully. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; manner/quality of writing)
The second sentence evaluates the produced writing through the action. Context supplies whether สวย describes letter shape, overall presentation, or style.
Position after a verb-object unit
With a transitive action, the object normally stays close to its verb and the manner follows the verb-object unit.
กรุณาเขียนที่อยู่ให้ชัดครับ
karuna khian thi yu hai chat khrap
Please write the address clearly. (formal-polite request, male speaker; object before manner/result)
ช่างติดป้ายตรงมากค่ะ
chang tit pai trong mak kha
The technician installed the sign very straight. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; resulting alignment)
The word ให้ in เขียนที่อยู่ให้ชัด helps present clarity as the intended result. Thai often leaves the boundary between manner and result semantically close: a sign installed “straight” is both the way the work was done and the state achieved. That ambiguity is real and does not need an English-style adverb/adjective decision in every case.
Bare properties and reduplication
The repeat mark ๆ can present a manner as sustained, repeated, softened, or carefully controlled. It does not simply mean “more.”
ขับช้า ๆ นะคะ ถนนลื่น
khap cha cha na kha thanon luen
Drive slowly; the road is slippery. (polite, female advice; softened sustained manner)
อ่านข้อความนี้ดัง ๆ อีกครั้งครับ
an khokhwam ni dang dang ik khrang khrap
Read this message aloud once more. (ordinary polite request, male speaker; sustained audible manner)
ดูตัวเลขดี ๆ ก่อนกดยืนยันค่ะ
du tua lek di di kon kot yuenyan kha
Look at the figures carefully before pressing confirm. (ordinary polite advice, female speaker; reduplicated ดี means careful attention)
Compare plain ช้า in a factual description with ช้า ๆ in an instruction:
รถคันหน้าวิ่งช้ามากครับ
rot khan na wing cha mak khrap
The car in front is moving very slowly. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; factual speed)
ค่อย ๆ เลื่อนเก้าอี้นะคะ
khoi khoi luean kaoi na kha
Move the chair gradually and gently. (polite, female instruction; preverbal ค่อย ๆ shapes the action's progression)
The second example also shows a different construction: ค่อย ๆ commonly precedes the verb and means gradual, careful progression. Not every reduplicated manner occupies the same slot.
Degree follows the bare manner
Once a property is functioning as manner, degree material follows it: พูดเร็วมาก, เขียนชัดพอ, ขับช้าเกินไป.
วิทยากรพูดเร็วเกินไปค่ะ
witthayakon phut reo koen pai kha
The presenter speaks too quickly. (ordinary polite assessment, female speaker; excess after manner)
คุณเขียนตัวเลขใหญ่พอแล้วครับ
khun khian tua lek yai pho laeo khrap
You've written the numbers large enough now. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; sufficiency after property)
ไมโครโฟนตัวนี้รับเสียงชัดมากค่ะ
maikhrofon tua ni rap siang chat mak kha
This microphone picks up sound very clearly. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; degree after quality)
These degree words do not agree with a subject and do not mark time. แล้ว in the second sentence shows that the sufficient state has now been reached.
Negation can target the action or its quality
เขาไม่ได้พูดดังครับ
khao mai dai phut dang khrap
He didn't speak loudly. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; loud speaking is denied)
เขาพูดไม่ดังครับ
khao phut mai dang khrap
He doesn't speak loudly / His voice isn't loud. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; local manner degree is negative)
The first often answers whether a loud-speaking event happened. The second describes the produced speech as not loud. Context and prosody can narrow the difference, but the position of ไม่ gives the listener an initial scope cue.
When bare manner is not the natural choice
Abstract, evaluative, or institutionally defined manners often prefer อย่าง: อย่างสุภาพ “politely,” อย่างเป็นระบบ “systematically,” อย่างถูกต้อง “correctly/in accordance with the correct standard.” Bare forms may remain possible in particular collocations, but there is no productive license to place any property after any verb.
กรุณาปฏิบัติตามขั้นตอนอย่างถูกต้องค่ะ
karuna patibat tam khanton yang thuktong kha
Please follow the procedure correctly. (formal-polite instruction, female speaker; explicit standard-based manner)
เขาจัดเอกสารเป็นระบบมากครับ
khao chat ekkasan pen rabop mak khrap
He organizes documents very systematically. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; เป็นระบบ is a lexical predicate complement)
The second does not use bare ระบบ alone. The expression เป็นระบบ “be systematic/organized” is the conventional unit. Lexical convention matters as much as general order.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
เสียงในห้องเบาไปไหมคะ
siang nai hong bao pai mai kha
Is the sound in the room too quiet? (polite, female question; degree of sound property)
เบาไปนิดครับ ช่วยพูดดังขึ้นอีกหน่อยได้ไหม
bao pai nit khrap chuai phut dang khuen ik noi dai mai
It's a little too quiet. Could you speak a bit louder? (polite, male reply; property omitted topic, then bare manner with change)
The reply keeps ดัง next to พูด and adds ขึ้น to request an increase. No subject is required because speaker and addressee are recoverable from the turn.
Common Mistakes
1. Adding อย่าง to every English -ly meaning
❌ เขาพูดอย่างเร็วค่ะ
Unnatural neutral phrasing—this frequent manner uses bare เร็ว rather than an automatically added อย่าง.
✅ เขาพูดเร็วค่ะ
khao phut reo kha
She speaks quickly. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
2. Putting the bare manner before the action
❌ เขาช้าขับรถครับ
Incorrect neutral order—ช้า follows the driving predicate.
✅ เขาขับรถช้าครับ
khao khap rot cha khrap
He drives slowly. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
3. Putting มาก before the manner property
❌ พนักงานพิมพ์มากเร็วค่ะ
Incorrect degree order—มาก follows เร็ว.
✅ พนักงานพิมพ์เร็วมากค่ะ
phanakngan phim reo mak kha
The employee types very quickly. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
4. Assuming every property works bare after every verb
❌ เจ้าหน้าที่อธิบายเป็นทางการอย่างครับ
Incorrect order and construction—the established explicit phrase is อย่างเป็นทางการ.
✅ เจ้าหน้าที่อธิบายอย่างเป็นทางการครับ
chaonathi athibai yang pen thangkan khrap
The officer gives an official explanation. (formal-polite statement, male speaker)
Key Takeaways
- A bare property after an action can express everyday manner without any adverbial ending.
- The object normally remains with its verb; manner or result follows the verb-object unit.
- Reduplication often makes a manner sustained, softened, or careful, while มาก expresses high degree.
- Lexical compatibility controls the pattern: learn common pairings and use อย่าง for many abstract or explicitly evaluated manners.
