This route takes a complete beginner from Thai-script orientation to short, polite exchanges about identity, food, prices, places, and immediate needs. It does not postpone reading until “later.” Thai spelling contains information about consonant class, vowel shape, syllable type, and tone, while social meaning depends on reference terms and particles; those strands must develop together.
Allow about 49–63 focused hours, plus short daily exposure. That is an estimate for completing this route, not a promise of identical speed or an official proficiency certificate. A1 is functional: the learner can use familiar expressions, introduce themselves, ask and answer simple personal questions, and handle concrete needs when a cooperative interlocutor speaks clearly.
The governing principle: interleave four strands
Every study week should contain:
- script — recognize and write real Thai chunks;
- sound — hear aspiration, vowel length, finals, and lexical tone;
- grammar — build noun phrases and uninflected predicates in Thai order;
- social use — choose names, pronouns, and polite particles for an actual relationship.
Studying only romanization hides distinctions Thai script makes. Studying tone tables without phrases produces inert knowledge. Memorizing phrases without speaker roles can make a grammatically correct line socially odd.
Ordered A1 route
Complete each row's pages in the listed order. The links are all pages in this Thai guide.
| Stage | Pages in prerequisite order | Study time | Milestone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Writing-system overview → direction and spacing → visual order → consonant names → vowel map | 6–8 hours | Copy and segment a short sign without inserting spaces between every word. |
| aspiration → vowel length → initial and final values → five tones → three consonant classes → live and dead syllables → tone-rule inputs | 10–12 hours | Hear and reproduce familiar minimal contrasts, then explain which spelling facts determine a word's tone. |
| noun basics → bare nouns → no articles → postnominal modifiers → classifier overview → noun–number–classifier order | 6–8 hours | Order one drink or dish with an appropriate classifier and modifier. |
| invariant verbs → basic SVO → property predicates without a copula → time from context → ไม่ negation → ไหม questions | 8–10 hours | Make and negate a present or future-relevant statement without conjugating the verb or inserting เป็น before an adjective. |
| zero pronouns → names for I and you → ครับ and speaker presentation → ค่ะ/คะ and speaker presentation → greetings → thanks | 7–9 hours | Introduce yourself and complete a short polite exchange using a reference strategy you can explain. |
| request frames → ability → food → shopping → directions → annotated signs | 8–10 hours | Order with one modification, ask a price or direction, and extract the key instruction from a short sign. |
| greeting and introduction text → café-order text → revisit weak pages from stages 1–6 | 4–6 hours | Perform the final can-do project below twice without reading a prepared script. |
Stage 1 milestone: read chunks, not Roman letters
You do not need every rare spelling before reading anything. You do need the direction of writing, natural spacing, consonant/vowel visual order, and a growing set of high-frequency letters. Copy whole useful chunks and mark syllable boundaries in your notes, not by adding artificial spaces to Thai.
ทางออกอยู่ด้านซ้าย
thang ok yu dan sai
The exit is on the left. (public sign or direction; first reading milestone)
ร้านปิดวันจันทร์
ran pit wan chan
The shop is closed on Monday. (short practical notice)
For each line, first locate familiar shapes, then listen, then compare the written chunk with RTGS. If you can pronounce only the RTGS, the milestone is not yet complete.
Stage 2 milestone: protect meaningful sound contrasts
English speakers often hear Thai through English categories. Practice aspiration and vowel length before expecting stable tone perception; all can distinguish words. Tone spelling is a calculation using consonant class, syllable type, vowel length, final type, and any tone mark—not a direct “mark equals tone” code.
Record one short phrase, compare it with native audio, and correct only one dimension at a time. A recognizable A1 phrase is a better target than an isolated theatrical tone contour.
ขอข้าวเปล่าหนึ่งจานครับ
kho khao plao nueng chan khrap
One plate of plain rice, please. (male diner; aspiration and vowel-length practice inside a useful request)
Stage 3 milestone: package a noun phrase
Thai has no articles equivalent to English a and the. Modifiers usually follow the noun, while an ordinary exact count uses noun + numeral + classifier. Learn the classifier inside a transaction rather than as a detached bilingual list.
กาแฟเย็นหวานน้อยหนึ่งแก้วครับ
kafae yen wan noi nueng kaeo khrap
One lightly sweetened iced coffee, please. (male customer; natural café order)
ข้าวผัดไม่ใส่กุ้งหนึ่งจานค่ะ
khao phat mai sai kung nueng chan kha
One plate of fried rice without shrimp, please. (female customer; modified dish and classifier)
Do not memorize แก้ว = glass as if every English “glass” takes it. Connect กาแฟ...หนึ่งแก้ว to the container-count construction and ข้าวผัด...หนึ่งจาน to a plated serving.
Stage 4 milestone: make a Thai predicate
Thai verbs do not conjugate for person or tense. Time expressions and context locate events. Property words can predicate directly, so English be must not automatically become เป็น.
วันนี้ห้องนี้ว่าง แต่พรุ่งนี้ไม่ว่าง
wan ni hong ni wang tae phrung ni mai wang
This room is available today but not tomorrow. (property predicate; no copula)
รถเมล์ไปสถานีรถไฟไหมครับ
rot me pai sathani rotfai mai khrap
Does this bus go to the train station? (male traveler; simple ไหม question)
The second clause needs no English does. ไหม turns the proposition into a neutral yes–no question, while ครับ manages polite stance.
Stage 5 milestone: choose a social voice
There is no single Thai word that safely replaces English I or you everywhere. Begin with a stable self-reference appropriate to your presentation and setting—such as ผม or ฉัน—learn when a name is natural, and notice when Thai omits a recoverable pronoun. Pair this with the correct polite-particle pattern rather than copying particles heard in casual media.
สวัสดีครับ ผมชื่อโทมัส มาจากไอร์แลนด์ครับ
sawatdi khrap phom chue thomat ma chak ailaen khrap
Hello. My name is Thomas, and I'm from Ireland. (male speaker; polite first meeting)
สวัสดีค่ะ ฉันชื่อมีนา ตอนนี้อยู่เชียงใหม่ค่ะ
sawatdi kha chan chue mina ton ni yu chiang mai kha
Hello. My name is Mina, and I'm currently in Chiang Mai. (female speaker; polite first meeting)
Female statement ค่ะ differs from question/attention คะ. Male ครับ is also a self-presentation choice; particles index the speaker's stance and presentation, not the listener's gender.
Stage 6 milestone: complete a repairable task
A1 does not mean speaking without breakdown. It means having compact language for a need and a repair strategy when comprehension fails.
ห้องน้ำอยู่ทางไหนคะ
hong nam yu thang nai kha
Which way is the restroom? (female traveler; polite direction question)
ขอโทษครับ พูดช้าอีกนิดได้ไหมครับ
kho thot khrap phut cha ik nit dai mai khrap
Sorry, could you speak a little more slowly? (male learner; polite repair request)
ป้ายนี้เขียนว่า ห้ามเข้า ใช่ไหมคะ
pai ni khian wa ham khao chai mai kha
This sign says ‘No entry,’ right? (female learner checking an interpretation)
These tasks combine script, sound, syntax, and social interaction. A memorized translation list cannot substitute for that integration.
The four-pass review loop
Use the same loop after every stage:
- Same day — recognition: read the page examples and identify the targeted form.
- Next day — production: rebuild three examples from an English situation, then check Thai order.
- Three days later — discrimination: contrast the target with its nearest competitor, such as ค่ะ versus คะ or count phrase versus article.
- One week later — scenario: perform the milestone with a new noun, place, price, or interlocutor.
Keep an error log with four columns: Thai target, your version, corrected version, and reason. “Forgot word” is less useful than “inserted English copula before property predicate” or “counted noun without classifier.”
Final can-do project
Simulate one morning in Thai:
- greet a new person and exchange names and origins;
- read a café sign and order one drink with a sweetness modification;
- ask the price and understand a short numerical answer;
- ask whether a bus goes to the station;
- request slower repetition once;
- read one ห้าม... or ทางออก... sign and explain its practical meaning.
Complete the sequence once with notes, once from Thai cue cards only, and once with the order changed by a partner. The project is successful when the meaning survives repair—not when every sound is indistinguishable from a native speaker.
Common Mistakes
1. Postponing Thai script
❌ เรียนแต่อักษรโรมันก่อน แล้วค่อยดูอักษรไทยหลายเดือนข้างหน้า
Faulty study plan—romanization omits or obscures essential Thai spelling and sound contrasts.
✅ เรียนอักษรไทยพร้อมเสียงและคำที่ใช้จริงตั้งแต่สัปดาห์แรก
rian akson thai phrom siang lae kham thi chai ching tangtae sapda raek
Study Thai script together with sound and useful words from the first week. (effective integrated plan)
2. Reading the tone mark as the spoken tone
❌ เห็นไม้เอกแล้วออกเสียงเอกทุกคำ
Incorrect tone method—the result also depends on consonant class, syllable type, vowel length, and final.
✅ ก่อนออกเสียง ให้ดูชั้นพยัญชนะ ชนิดพยางค์ ความยาวสระ และเครื่องหมายวรรณยุกต์
kon ok siang hai du chan phayanchana chanit phayang khwam yao sara lae khrueangmai wannayuk
Before pronouncing it, check consonant class, syllable type, vowel length, and the tone mark. (accurate beginner procedure)
3. Learning classifiers as detached translations
❌ จำว่า ใบ แปลว่า one แล้วใช้กับคำนามทุกคำ
Incorrect generalization—ใบ is a lexical classifier, not the Thai translation of “one.”
✅ จำเป็นวลีว่า ตั๋วหนึ่งใบ กาแฟหนึ่งแก้ว และข้าวหนึ่งจาน
cham pen wali wa tua nueng bai kafae nueng kaeo lae khao nueng chan
Memorize phrases such as one ticket, one coffee, and one plate of rice. (construction-based classifier learning)
4. Copying an informal particle before learning its social force
❌ ใช้โว้ยกับพนักงานเพราะได้ยินในละคร
Serious register error—โว้ย is rough and potentially offensive, not a casual substitute for polite ครับ/ค่ะ.
✅ เริ่มจากคำขอสุภาพ แล้วสังเกตคำลงท้ายตามความสัมพันธ์ของผู้พูด
roem chak kham kho suphap laeo sangket kham long thai tam khwam samphan khong phu phut
Begin with polite requests, then observe final particles according to the speaker's relationships. (safe A1 strategy)
Key Takeaways
- Interleave script, sound, grammar, and social use from the first week.
- Learn noun phrases and classifiers inside tasks, not as English-equivalent word lists.
- Build clauses with invariant predicates, time words, negation, and question particles rather than English auxiliaries.
- Review through delayed retrieval and changed scenarios.
- Finish A1 able to complete short concrete exchanges and repair them when needed.
