แม้แต่ marks scalar “even.” It appears immediately before a person, object, amount, time, or action whose inclusion is especially informative because that alternative lies at a surprising edge of a contextually understood scale. แม้แต่พนักงานใหม่ก็ทำได้ says that even the new employees can do it—revealing only if they were expected to find it difficult.
The scale is not stored in the particle alone. Prior discourse tells listeners which alternatives are easier, likelier, more basic, or more extreme. Under negation, the practical direction reverses: ไม่ได้พักแม้แต่ห้านาที denies even the smallest expected rest and therefore implies that no longer rest occurred either.
Put แม้แต่ before the scalar focus
The focused material follows แม้แต่ as a complete constituent. Subject focus commonly uses แม้แต่ X ก็(ยัง) P; object or amount focus keeps the expression after the verb.

The first alternative is low on an experience scale, the second peripheral in a document, and the third exceptional as a work time. ก็ links the focused subject or setting to its predicate; ยัง presents the predicate as persisting at that unexpected edge.
Minimal contrast: addition versus scalar surprise
Additive ก็ includes another alternative. แม้แต่ adds the claim that this alternative is unexpectedly informative.
คุณปกรณ์ก็เข้าใจวิธีใช้ระบบครับ

The second line presupposes a ranking that may be socially delicate. Perhaps Pakorn missed the training or had reported difficulty; without such a reason, it can sound insulting. Scalar focus is not simply stronger ก็.
The new focused person remains overt, while the active system and task may later be omitted:

The second sentence omits the training agent and exact task because the first sentence supplies them. The late arrival must remain overt because it defines the surprising alternative.
Positive clauses include an unlikely edge
In positive contexts, แม้แต่ X ก็ P usually says that P holds even at an alternative where P was less expected. If it holds there, the listener readily infers that it holds for more ordinary alternatives as well.

What counts as unlikely is contextual. Travel distance may motivate the last sentence; official rank alone does not. A good speaker supplies enough background to prevent an arbitrary or offensive ranking.
Negation reaches the minimum
Under negation, the focused item is often the easiest or smallest expectation. Denying that minimum entails a more comprehensive failure.
ทั้งวันเขาไม่ได้พักแม้แต่ห้านาทีครับ

Five minutes, a receipt, and the easiest question are minimum expectations in these contexts. The speaker claims failure already at that lower boundary. This is why the practical scale appears reversed from the positive examples.
Negation precedes the predicate, while แม้แต่ remains adjacent to its focus. The negation and focus guide covers broader operator interactions.
Not even undertaking an action
ไม่แม้แต่จะ + verb denies the minimal act of attempting, considering, or beginning the action. It is common in critical reporting and careful argument.

Here จะ helps form the unrealized action under scalar negation; it is not simply future tense. English tense does not license adding or deleting it mechanically.
Scalar focus across connected sentences
A good discourse first establishes an expectation and then uses แม้แต่ to locate an informative edge.
คู่มือนี้เขียนสำหรับคนทั่วไปค่ะ แม้แต่คนที่ไม่เคยใช้โปรแกรมก็ทำตามได้

The first sentence establishes inexperience as relevant; the second establishes an outage severe enough to make the normally easiest page inaccessible. Without those setups, the scale would be less clear.
Thai freely omits an understood object in a continuation, but the focused expression cannot vanish. แม้แต่ก็ทำได้ does not tell the listener which alternative is surprising.
แม้แต่ is not concessive แม้
แม้/แม้ว่า + clause means “although/even though” and relates two propositions. แม้แต่ + constituent selects an alternative within one proposition.
แม้ฝนตก เราก็จัดงานตามกำหนดค่ะ

Prosody, register, and face
แม้แต่ occurs in ordinary conversation, reporting, and (academic) argument. Prominence on the focused phrase marks the scalar endpoint; a surprised contour can praise, while a clipped contour can accuse. RTGS mae tae shows neither tone nor discourse prominence.

Ranking people can threaten face. แม้แต่เด็กฝึกงานก็รู้ may criticize an experienced colleague by treating an intern as the lowest expected knower. State the relevant limitation or use neutral additive ก็/ด้วย if no scale is intended.
