ด้วย as Additive after the Focused Phrase

Additive ด้วย normally appears late in the clause and includes another participant, object, property, or event in a set already active in discourse. ฉันไปด้วย means “I'm going too”; แนบใบเสร็จมาด้วย means “include the receipt as well.” The prior question or parallel statement tells the listener what is being added.

Unlike subject-oriented additive ก็, final ด้วย may leave object focus and whole-event focus with the same surface position. Thai resolves that potential overlap through information flow and prosody. It can omit participants already recoverable from the exchange, but it must provide enough overt material to identify the new addition.

Additive ด้วย comes after the relevant phrase

The basic clause is built first, and ด้วย follows the phrase or predicate being included. A polite or alignment particle may follow it.

ฝ่ายประชาสัมพันธ์จะเข้าร่วมด้วยค่ะ

fai prachasamphan cha khao ruam duai kha

Public Relations will participate too. (ordinary-polite additive-participant statement, female speaker)

เขาส่งสัญญามาแล้ว และแนบตารางราคามาด้วยครับ

khao song sanya ma laeo lae naep tarang rakha ma duai khrap

He sent the contract and attached the price table as well. (ordinary-polite added-object report, male speaker)

ร้านนี้มีห้องประชุม แล้วก็มีพื้นที่ทำงานร่วมกันด้วยค่ะ

ran ni mi hong prachum laeo ko mi phuenthi tham ngan ruam kan duai kha

This place has a meeting room and also has a coworking area. (ordinary-polite added-fact description, female speaker)

The new participant, object, or property appears before ด้วย. English often places also before the verb, but copying that position into Thai is not the rule.

💡
First identify the open slot in the discourse—another person, thing, or event. Put the expression that fills that slot in its normal Thai clause position, then place additive ด้วย at the right edge.

Minimal contrast: context selects the additive focus

The sentence เขาส่งใบรับรองมาด้วย can add the certificate to a list of documents or add certificate-sending to a list of actions. A preceding question makes one reading natural.

เขาส่งเอกสารอะไรมาอีกคะ — ส่งใบรับรองมาด้วยค่ะ

khao song ekkasan arai ma ik kha song bai raprong ma duai kha

What other document did he send? — He sent the certificate as well. (ordinary-polite exchange, female speakers; object focus)

นอกจากโทรมาแล้ว เขาทำอะไรอีกครับ — ส่งใบรับรองมาด้วยค่ะ

nok chak thora ma laeo khao tham arai ik khrap song bai raprong ma duai kha

Besides calling, what else did he do? — He sent the certificate as well. (ordinary-polite exchange; male questioner, female respondent; event focus)

The answer has the same form, but its alternatives differ: documents in the first exchange, actions in the second. Adjacency narrows the domain, while question–answer structure completes the interpretation. There is no need to force an English article or tense auxiliary into the Thai answer.

With a person, the event is normally already active:

มีใครไปพบลูกค้าอีกไหมคะ — ผมไปด้วยครับ

mi khrai pai phop lukkha ik mai kha phom pai duai khrap

Is anyone else going to meet the client? — I'm going too. (ordinary-polite exchange; female questioner, male respondent; participant focus)

The answer repeats ไป to anchor the speaker in the active event but omits the client, whose identity remains recoverable.

ก็ and ด้วย divide the work

When a new subject is added, ก็ follows that subject and precedes the predicate; ด้วย follows the predicate. Thai often uses both: คุณนิดก็ไปด้วย. The two positions make the comparison especially clear.

หัวหน้าจะไปงานเปิดตัว คุณนิดก็ไปด้วยค่ะ

huana cha pai ngan poet tua khun nit ko pai duai kha

The supervisor will go to the launch, and Khun Nit will too. (ordinary-polite additive-participant report, female speaker)

ระบบเก็บชื่อผู้ใช้ และบันทึกเวลาเข้าใช้งานด้วยครับ

rabop kep chue phu chai lae banthuek wela khao chai ngan duai khrap

The system stores usernames and records login times as well. (formal-neutral added-event description, male voice)

ฝ่ายขายก็เห็นด้วย ฝ่ายกฎหมายก็เห็นด้วยค่ะ

fai khai ko hen duai fai kotmai ko hen duai kha

Both Sales and Legal agree. (ordinary-polite parallel-topic statement, female speaker; เห็นด้วย is the lexical expression ‘agree’)

The last line contains lexical เห็นด้วย “agree,” not additive final ด้วย. Segmentation matters: a familiar two-word expression cannot be analyzed by stripping off every final-looking ด้วย. The broader ด้วย reference separates additive, instrumental, joint, and request uses.

Given topics and zero anaphora

Thai commonly retains the new addition and omits the repeated participants around it.

เรื่องเอกสาร ส่งสำเนาบัตรมาแล้วค่ะ แนบหลักฐานที่อยู่มาด้วย

rueang ekkasan song samnao bat ma laeo kha naep lakthan thi yu ma duai

As for the documents, the ID copy has been sent, and proof of address was included too. (ordinary-polite update, female speaker; sender remains recoverable)

เราเช็กยอดแล้วครับ แล้วก็ตรวจเลขบัญชีด้วย ไม่พบปัญหา

rao chek yot laeo khrap laeo ko truat lek banchi duai mai phop panha

We checked the total and checked the account number too; we found no problem. (ordinary-polite report, male speaker; continuous subject omitted in the second clause)

ลูกค้าขอเลื่อนวันส่งของค่ะ แล้วขอเปลี่ยนที่อยู่ด้วย

lukkha kho luean wan song khong kha laeo kho plian thi yu duai

The customer asked to postpone the delivery date and also asked to change the address. (ordinary-polite report, female speaker; customer omitted under continuity)

The active actor is omitted only because no competitor intervenes. If a second person becomes salient, repeat the name or role. Thai has no verb inflection that identifies the omitted person, so discourse continuity bears the load.

💡
Do not equate zero with “missing grammar.” The unspoken role remains part of the predicate and must have one recoverable referent; ด้วย adds new content inside that continuing frame.

Additive ด้วย versus instrument ด้วย

Medial ด้วย + noun phrase introduces a means or instrument. Clause-final additive ด้วย has no following instrument phrase.

เจ้าหน้าที่เขียนรหัสด้วยปากกาค่ะ

chao nathi khian rahat duai pakka kha

The staff member wrote the code with a pen. (ordinary-polite instrument expression, female speaker)

เจ้าหน้าที่ส่งคู่มือมาด้วยค่ะ

chao nathi song khumue ma duai kha

The staff member sent the manual too. (ordinary-polite additive-object statement, female speaker)

In the first, ปากกา follows ด้วย and names the instrument. In the second, คู่มือ precedes final ด้วย and is included in a previously known delivery. English with versus too reflects a Thai structural difference.

A directive can create a request reading

After an action directed at the listener, final ด้วย can ask that action to be included. It may be additive to a task list, but established combinations such as ช่วยด้วย “help!” do not require a prior list. This is not the same as declarative additive focus.

ก่อนส่งช่วยตรวจเลขบัญชีด้วยนะคะ

kon song chuai truat lek banchi duai na kha

Before sending it, please check the account number too. (softened ordinary-polite reminder, female speaker)

ผมตรวจยอดด้วยครับ

phom truat yot duai khrap

I checked the total too. (ordinary-polite additive declaration, male speaker; not a request)

Sentence type, not ด้วย alone, distinguishes them. นะคะ seeks alignment and ครับ marks the male speaker's polite stance; neither is an English tense ending.

Prosody and correction

Unstressed ด้วย integrates an addition smoothly. Prominent final ด้วย can correct an assumption that someone or something was excluded: “that one too.” A gentle ด้วยนะคะ sounds like a reminder; clipped delivery can sound impatient.

ไม่ได้ส่งแค่สัญญานะคะ ส่งใบเสนอราคามาด้วย

mai dai song khae sanya na kha song bai sanoe rakha ma duai

They didn't send just the contract; they sent the quotation too. (ordinary-polite corrective expansion, female speaker)

งานนี้ไม่ได้แค่เสร็จเร็วครับ แต่ยังละเอียดด้วย

ngan ni mai dai khae set reo khrap tae yang laiat duai

This work wasn't merely finished quickly; it is thorough too. (ordinary-polite corrective evaluation, male speaker)

In the second line, the first clause establishes a property scale and the short second clause adds ละเอียด. The subject remains zero because งานนี้ stays the topic.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

Two coworkers prepare materials for a workshop.

พรุ่งนี้ต้องเอาเอกสารอะไรไปบ้างคะ

phrung ni tong ao ekkasan arai pai bang kha

What documents do we need to take tomorrow? (ordinary-polite question, female speaker)

เอาคู่มือกับแบบฝึกหัดไปครับ

ao khumue kap baep fuekhat pai khrap

Take the handbook and exercises. (ordinary-polite answer, male speaker; addressee recoverable)

ต้องเอาแบบประเมินไปด้วยไหมคะ

tong ao baep pramoen pai duai mai kha

Do we need to take the evaluation forms too? (ordinary-polite additive confirmation, female speaker)

เอาไปด้วยครับ แล้วช่วยนับจำนวนก่อนใส่กล่องด้วย

ao pai duai khrap laeo chuai nap chamnuan kon sai klong duai

Take them too, and please count them before putting them in the box as well. (ordinary-polite answer and added request, male speaker)

The first ด้วย confirms an additional object. The second packages another requested task. Shared speakers and materials remain unspoken where their roles are obvious.

Common Mistakes

1. Putting additive ด้วย before its object like English “also”

❌ เขาส่งด้วยใบรับรองมาค่ะ

Wrong for additive object focus—ด้วย before a noun phrase is heard as introducing a means, not as post-focus ‘too.’

✅ เขาส่งใบรับรองมาด้วยค่ะ

khao song bai raprong ma duai kha

He sent the certificate too. (ordinary-polite additive-object statement, female speaker)

2. Treating instrumental ด้วย as an addition

❌ เขียนรหัสด้วยปากกา หมายความว่าเขียนรหัสอีกครั้งครับ

Incorrect interpretation—ด้วยปากกา names the instrument; it does not mean the code was written too or again.

✅ เขียนรหัสด้วยปากกาครับ

khian rahat duai pakka khrap

Write the code with a pen. (ordinary-polite instrument expression, male speaker)

3. Using additive ด้วย without an active alternative

❌ เริ่มแนะนำตัวครั้งแรกว่า ฉันเป็นนักออกแบบด้วยค่ะ

Unmotivated in the intended context-free introduction—ด้วย implies another person, role, or property already under comparison.

✅ ฉันเป็นนักออกแบบค่ะ

chan pen nak ok baep kha

I'm a designer. (ordinary-polite neutral introduction, female speaker)

4. Repeating every continuous participant

❌ ฉันตรวจใบสมัครแล้วฉันส่งใบสมัครให้หัวหน้าแล้วฉันแนบรูปด้วยค่ะ

Unnaturally repetitive—the same actor and application remain active, while only the added attachment is new.

✅ ฉันตรวจใบสมัครแล้วค่ะ ส่งให้หัวหน้าและแนบรูปไปด้วย

chan truat bai samak laeo kha song hai huana lae naep rup pai duai

I checked the application, sent it to the supervisor, and attached the photo too. (ordinary-polite report, female speaker)

Key Takeaways

Clause-final additive ด้วย includes another participant, object, property, or event in a discourse set. Put the new material in its ordinary clause position before ด้วย, and use the active question to resolve object versus event focus. Contrast subject-oriented ก็, medial instrumental ด้วย + noun, and directive-final ด้วย, while omitting only participants whose roles remain uniquely recoverable.
