Additive ก็ says that a comment already associated with one alternative also holds of another: ฝ่ายกฎหมายส่งแล้ว ฝ่ายบัญชีก็ส่งแล้ว “Legal has sent theirs, and Accounting has too.” It normally follows the added subject or topic and precedes the comment. The first statement, question, or shared situation supplies the parallel alternative.
The same short form also links a result to a condition, continues a sequence, or frames a response as connected to an expectation. Those uses share a discourse logic—ก็ presents what follows as tied to something active—but they are not interchangeable English words. This page concentrates on additive structure and the transitions that help listeners recover its anchor.
Add a subject or topic, then give its comment
The clearest additive frame is [added topic] + ก็ + [parallel comment]. The comment may repeat fully or omit a recoverable object.
| Discourse relation | Productive frame | Result |
|---|---|---|
| additional person | X did P; Y + ก็ + P | P is true of Y too |
| parallel objects as topics | X + ก็ + P; Y + ก็ + P | P applies across both items |
| parallel times | time X + ก็ + P; time Y + ก็ + P | both intervals qualify |
| negative parallel | X + ก็ + ไม่ P; Y + ก็ + ไม่ P | neither alternative satisfies P |
| whole prior turn as anchor | question/claim — ก็ + response | response is framed as following from it |
ฝ่ายกฎหมายส่งความเห็นแล้ว ฝ่ายบัญชีก็ส่งแล้วค่ะ
fai kotmai song khwam hen laeo fai banchi ko song laeo kha
Legal has sent its comments, and Accounting has too. (ordinary-polite additive update, female speaker; repeated object omitted)
คุณนิดจะเข้าประชุม ผมก็จะเข้าด้วยครับ
khun nit cha khao prachum phom ko cha khao duai khrap
Khun Nit will attend the meeting, and I will too. (ordinary-polite additive participation, male speaker)
สาขาเชียงใหม่เปิดวันเสาร์ สาขาขอนแก่นก็เปิดครับ
sakha chiang mai poet wan sao sakha khon kaen ko poet khrap
The Chiang Mai branch opens on Saturday, and the Khon Kaen branch does too. (ordinary-polite additive schedule report, male speaker)
In each second clause, the phrase before ก็ is new as an alternative, while the following predicate is parallel and largely given. Thai does not need English does too morphology; an unchanged predicate and ก็ establish the relation.
Minimal contrast: neutral report versus additive report
An isolated clause without ก็ can introduce a fact. The same clause with ก็ presupposes or evokes a relevant parallel.
คุณอรส่งแบบฟอร์มแล้วค่ะ
khun on song baep fom laeo kha
Khun On has sent the form. (ordinary-polite neutral update, female speaker)
คุณนิดส่งแบบฟอร์มแล้ว คุณอรก็ส่งแล้วค่ะ
khun nit song baep fom laeo khun on ko song laeo kha
Khun Nit has sent the form, and Khun On has too. (ordinary-polite additive update, female speaker)
The second sentence cannot be interpreted fully from ก็ = also alone. The first clause supplies Khun Nit as the comparison and the form as the recoverable object. If no earlier person or parallel fact is salient, additive ก็ sounds unmotivated or receives another discourse-linking reading.
Prosodic prominence normally falls on คุณอร, the new alternative. Strong stress on ก็ may sound corrective—“Khun On did too”—but Thai lexical tones remain intact. Written context must do work that English can sometimes leave to stress.
Repeated ก็ maps a set of alternatives
Thai can use X ก็ P, Y ก็ P to present several topics, times, or objects symmetrically. This often translates as both, either, or a repeated also rather than one fixed word.
ชาเขียวก็มี กาแฟดำก็มีค่ะ
cha khiao ko mi kafae dam ko mi kha
They have green tea, and they have black coffee too. (ordinary-polite listing, female speaker; two drink alternatives as topics)
ช่วงเช้าก็ว่าง ช่วงบ่ายก็สะดวกครับ
chuang chao ko wang chuang bai ko saduak khrap
I'm free in the morning, and the afternoon is convenient too. (ordinary-polite scheduling, male speaker; two time alternatives)
วันศุกร์ก็ไม่ทัน วันจันทร์ก็เร็วเกินไปค่ะ
wan suk ko mai than wan chan ko reo koen pai kha
Friday is not feasible, and Monday is too soon. (ordinary-polite comparison, female speaker; neither date solves the problem)
The predicates need not be identical. What matters is that the alternatives answer one active question—available drinks, possible times, or proposed dates. ก็ keeps each topic inside that comparison.
Topic continuity licenses omission
When an object or event remains active, the additive clause can omit it. A changed actor, however, should be named so the listener knows which alternative ก็ adds.
ฝ่ายจัดซื้ออ่านสัญญาแล้วค่ะ ฝ่ายกฎหมายก็อ่านแล้วและเสนอให้แก้สองจุด
fai chat sue an sanya laeo kha fai kotmai ko an laeo lae sanoe hai kae song chut
Procurement has read the contract; Legal has too and proposed two changes. (ordinary-polite update, female speaker; contract omitted after continuity)
ฉันส่งตารางให้หัวหน้าแล้วค่ะ ส่งให้ฝ่ายบัญชีด้วย
chan song tarang hai huana laeo kha song hai fai banchi duai
I sent the table to the supervisor and to Accounting too. (ordinary-polite report, female speaker; continuous subject and object omitted)
The first example uses ฝ่ายกฎหมายก็... because a new actor is added. The second uses final ด้วย because an additional recipient is added while the subject remains continuous. This contrast is developed on ด้วย after the focus.
Do not repeat ฉัน, ตาราง, or an English article merely because English requires overt noun phrases. Omission works only while those referents have one dominant interpretation. If two contracts become salient, repeat or identify the intended one.
ก็ at a discourse transition
At turn start, ก็ may take the whole previous question, complaint, or expectation as its anchor. It can introduce a consequence, explanation, qualified assessment, or reluctant reply. That is a discourse-linking use, not necessarily addition.
แล้วเรื่องงบประมาณล่ะคะ — ก็ยังต้องรอผู้จัดการยืนยันครับ
laeo rueang ngoppraman la kha ko yang tong ro phu chatkan yuenyan khrap
And what about the budget? — Well, we still have to wait for the manager to confirm it. (ordinary-polite linked response; female questioner, male respondent)
ทำไมยังไม่ส่งไฟล์คะ — ก็ระบบยังเปิดไม่ได้ครับ
thammai yang mai song fai kha ko rabop yang poet mai dai khrap
Why haven't you sent the file? — Well, the system still won't open. (ordinary-polite explanatory response; female questioner, male respondent)
ร้านใหม่เป็นยังไงบ้างครับ — ก็สะดวกดีค่ะ แต่ที่จอดรถน้อย
ran mai pen yang ngai bang khrap ko saduak di kha tae thi chot rot noi
How is the new shop? — It's fairly convenient, but there is little parking. (ordinary-polite qualified assessment; male questioner, female respondent)
Initial ก็ makes the answer responsive to what was just raised. It may sound reflective, defensive, obvious, or qualified depending on intonation. Omitting it preserves the core fact but changes how that fact relates to the prior turn.
Keep additive, conditional, and sequential anchors distinct
The larger construction tells you what ก็ is linking.
| Frame | Anchor | Typical interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| person + ก็ + predicate | another relevant person | person also does/is P |
| ถ้า P + ก็ Q | condition P | Q follows if P |
| event + แล้วก็ + event | previous event | next or additional event |
| prior turn — ก็ + response | question or expectation | linked stance or explanation |
ถ้าลูกค้ายืนยันวันนี้ เราก็เริ่มงานพรุ่งนี้ได้ค่ะ
tha lukkha yuenyan wan ni rao ko roem ngan phrung ni dai kha
If the client confirms today, we can start work tomorrow. (ordinary-polite conditional plan, female speaker; ก็ links result to condition)
ตรวจข้อมูลแล้วก็ส่งให้ผู้จัดการครับ
truat khomun laeo ko song hai phu chatkan khrap
Check the data and then send it to the manager. (ordinary-polite procedural sequence, male speaker; recoverable addressee omitted)
Neither example adds a new subject alternative. ก็ has an active anchor, but the anchor is a condition or prior event. The full range appears on the ก็ particle reference.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
Two colleagues track which teams have confirmed attendance.
ฝ่ายการตลาดยืนยันหรือยังคะ
fai kan talat yuenyan rue yang kha
Has Marketing confirmed yet? (ordinary-polite question, female speaker)
ยืนยันแล้วครับ ฝ่ายบริการก็ยืนยันแล้ว
yuenyan laeo khrap fai borikan ko yuenyan laeo
Yes. Customer Service has confirmed too. (ordinary-polite additive answer, male speaker; Marketing remains recoverable)
แล้วฝ่ายบัญชีล่ะคะ
laeo fai banchi la kha
And what about Accounting? (ordinary-polite topic-shift question, female speaker)
ก็ยังรอคำตอบอยู่ครับ ถ้ายืนยันแล้วผมจะแจ้งทันที
ko yang ro kham top yu khrap tha yuenyan laeo phom cha chaeng thanthi
We're still waiting for an answer. If they confirm, I'll let you know immediately. (ordinary-polite linked response, male speaker)
The second turn contains additive ก็ after the new team. The final turn contains response-initial ก็ anchored to the question; translating both mechanically as also would miss the distinction.
Common Mistakes
1. Putting additive ก็ before the new subject
❌ ฝ่ายขายส่งแล้วค่ะ ก็ฝ่ายกฎหมายส่งแล้ว
Incorrect neutral additive order—ก็ follows the added subject or topic.
✅ ฝ่ายขายส่งแล้วค่ะ ฝ่ายกฎหมายก็ส่งแล้ว
fai khai song laeo kha fai kotmai ko song laeo
Sales has sent theirs, and Legal has too. (ordinary-polite additive update, female speaker)
2. Putting ก็ after the predicate like English “too”
❌ คุณนิดมาแล้ว ผมมาครับก็
Incorrect additive placement—ก็ belongs after ผม and before the predicate.
✅ คุณนิดมาแล้ว ผมก็มาครับ
khun nit ma laeo phom ko ma khrap
Khun Nit has arrived, and I have too. (ordinary-polite additive statement, male speaker)
3. Using turn-initial ก็ in a context-free answer
❌ ชื่ออะไรคะ — ก็ชื่อปกรณ์ครับ
Marked for a neutral introduction—initial ก็ makes the name sound like a response to an expectation or challenge.
✅ ชื่ออะไรคะ — ชื่อปกรณ์ครับ
chue arai kha chue pakon khrap
What's your name? — My name is Pakorn. (ordinary-polite neutral exchange)
4. Repeating every given argument
❌ คุณอรตรวจสัญญาแล้วค่ะ คุณนิดก็ตรวจสัญญาแล้วคุณนิดก็ส่งสัญญาให้หัวหน้าแล้ว
Grammatical words but unnaturally repetitive—the new actor should be stated once, while the active contract remains recoverable.
✅ คุณอรตรวจสัญญาแล้วค่ะ คุณนิดก็ตรวจแล้วและส่งให้หัวหน้าแล้ว
khun on truat sanya laeo kha khun nit ko truat laeo lae song hai huana laeo
Khun On checked the contract; Khun Nit did too and sent it to the supervisor. (ordinary-polite update, female speaker)
Key Takeaways
Additive ก็ follows the new subject or topic and links it to a parallel comment already active in discourse. Repeated ก็ maps a set of comparable alternatives, while turn-initial ก็ links a response to a prior expectation rather than automatically meaning also. State changed actors, omit only genuinely recoverable material, and use context plus prosody to locate the anchor.
