Thai กับ can join two noun phrases inside one larger constituent: ชาเย็นกับกาแฟร้อน “iced tea and hot coffee,” or คุณแพรกับคุณวิน “Khun Phrae and Khun Win.” This is ordinary in conversation and informal writing. More formal prose often chooses และ, especially in long lists, but กับ is not careless or incorrect.
The essential question is what กับ joins. Between two noun phrases before one predicate, it normally creates a coordinated subject. After a verb, it may coordinate two objects—but with verbs of motion or interaction it can instead introduce a companion or partner. That second use is developed on the กับ as a relator page; here the focus is constituent coordination and its scope.
Join two noun phrases in one slot
The productive frame is A + กับ + B. The whole expression occupies whatever noun-phrase slot A alone could occupy. Thai does not add plural agreement to the predicate, and it does not need English articles before either member.
| Slot occupied by A กับ B | Productive frame | What is coordinated? |
|---|---|---|
| subject | A + กับ + B + predicate | two participants share one clause-level subject slot |
| object | verb + A + กับ + B | two things fill the same object role |
| location or time choice already licensed by the predicate | event + A + กับ + B | two parallel noun-like expressions |
| three-item list | A, B + กับ + C | กับ introduces the final item in conversational listing |
| measured nouns | noun + number + classifier + กับ + noun + number + classifier | each conjunct keeps its own complete measure phrase |
คุณแพรกับคุณวินจะไปรับแขกที่สถานีค่ะ
khun phrae kap khun win cha pai rap khaek thi sathani kha
Khun Phrae and Khun Win will go pick up the guests at the station. (ordinary polite plan, female speaker; coordinated subject)
เช้านี้ผมซื้อขนมปังกับไข่มาฝากครับ
chao ni phom sue khanom pang kap khai ma fak khrap
This morning I bought bread and eggs for everyone. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; coordinated objects)
ร้านนี้ขายทั้งหนังสือมือสองกับโปสการ์ดทำมือค่ะ
ran ni khai thang nangsue mue song kap potsakat tham mue kha
This shop sells secondhand books as well as handmade postcards. (ordinary polite description, female speaker)
The last example contains ทั้ง before the first item, a frequent conversational way to widen the set, but กับ itself remains the single coordinator between the two noun phrases. Unlike the more formal paired frame ทั้ง A และ B, bare A กับ B has no obligatory first half.
Subject scope: one coordinated group
Before the predicate, A กับ B forms one subject constituent. The predicate does not change form for two people or things. A plural or reciprocal marker may add meaning, but it is not agreement.
พ่อกับแม่กลับถึงบ้านแล้วค่ะ
pho kap mae klap thueng ban laeo kha
Dad and Mom have arrived home. (ordinary polite family update, female speaker)
ทีมออกแบบกับทีมขายกำลังคุยเรื่องราคาอยู่ครับ
thim ok baep kap thim khai kamlang khui rueang rakha yu khrap
The design team and the sales team are discussing the price. (ordinary polite workplace update, male speaker)
In the second sentence, กำลัง...อยู่ frames an ongoing discussion; it does not agree with the two teams. English learners should not insert an equivalent of are simply because the subject is plural. Thai predicates remain unchanged.
If joint action matters, add the appropriate predicate material. ช่วยกัน presents coordinated participants as cooperating; กับ alone only groups them in the subject slot.
น้องกับเพื่อนช่วยกันย้ายโต๊ะค่ะ
nong kap phuean chuai kan yai to kha
My younger sibling and a friend worked together to move the table. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; กัน makes the cooperation explicit)
This distinction is real: two coordinated participants can perform separate parts of an event, act together, or simply share a property. Context and the predicate supply that relation; กับ does not encode it by itself.
Minimal contrast: coordination or companion
Position changes the constituent that กับ belongs to.
ผมกับพี่จะไปส่งพัสดุครับ
phom kap phi cha pai song phatsadu khrap
My older sibling and I will go send the parcel. (ordinary polite plan, male speaker; ผมกับพี่ is the subject)
ผมจะไปส่งพัสดุกับพี่ครับ
phom cha pai song phatsadu kap phi khrap
I will go send the parcel with my older sibling. (ordinary polite plan, male speaker; กับพี่ is a companion phrase)
The situations may involve the same two people, but the packaging differs. In the first, both are introduced together as the subject. In the second, ผม is the subject and the sibling is added after the event as a companion. With more complex sentences, put the companion close to the event it belongs to or use ไปกับ...เพื่อ... when attachment would otherwise be unclear.
Object coordination and complete measure phrases
After a verb that selects an object, A กับ B normally fills that object slot. Each measured noun retains its own noun–number–classifier sequence.
ช่วยเตรียมแก้วน้ำกับจานเล็กไว้บนโต๊ะนะคะ
chuai triam kaeo nam kap chan lek wai bon to na kha
Please set out drinking glasses and small plates on the table. (ordinary polite instruction, female speaker)
ขอองุ่นหนึ่งถุงกับมะม่วงสองลูกครับ
kho angun nueng thung kap mamuang song luk khrap
I'd like one bag of grapes and two mangoes, please. (ordinary polite purchase, male speaker; each noun has its own classifier)
The first example needs no equivalents of the or some: the service situation identifies the intended objects. The second cannot share one classifier mechanically across both nouns. ถุง measures the bag of grapes, while ลูก counts the mangoes. Coordination does not override classifier selection.
For longer lists in ordinary speech, pauses organize the earlier items and กับ can introduce the final one. Formal documents more often use commas plus final และ (formal-neutral).
อย่าลืมเอาสมุด ปากกา กับบัตรพนักงานมาด้วยนะครับ
ya luem ao samut pakka kap bat phanakngan ma duai na khrap
Don't forget to bring a notebook, a pen, and your employee card too. (ordinary polite reminder, male speaker)
The written spaces follow phrase boundaries around a list; they are not spaces between every Thai word. Repeating กับ between every item is possible in spontaneous speech, but one final coordinator is easier to process.
กับ is not a general clause linker
Nominal กับ does not normally join two full assertions or a sequence of actions. A sentence such as “I checked the stock and sent the order” needs a clause or event linker such as แล้ว, แล้วก็, or another relation-specific form. The difference is scope: noun coordination builds one constituent inside a clause; clause coordination connects two propositions.
ผมตรวจจำนวนสินค้าแล้วก็ส่งคำสั่งซื้อครับ
phom truat chamnuan sinkha laeo ko song kham sang sue khrap
I checked the stock quantity and then sent the purchase order. (ordinary polite sequence, male speaker; two events, not noun phrases)
The subject is spoken once because it remains the same and recoverable. This is ordinary Thai omission, not an infinitive construction and not a tense form. If the second actor changes, state that actor explicitly. The broader coordination page explains clause-level ellipsis and linker choice.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
Two coworkers prepare refreshments for a workshop.
พรุ่งนี้ใครจะไปรับขนมกับกาแฟคะ
phrung ni khrai cha pai rap khanom kap kafae kha
Who will pick up the snacks and coffee tomorrow? (ordinary polite question, female speaker; coordinated objects)
ผมกับคุณอาร์ตจะไปรับครับ
phom kap khun at cha pai rap khrap
Khun Art and I will pick them up. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; coordinated subject and omitted objects)
งั้นช่วยเอาถ้วย กระดาษเช็ดปาก กับน้ำตาลมาด้วยนะคะ
ngan chuai ao thuai kradat chet pak kap namtan ma duai na kha
Then please bring cups, napkins, and sugar too. (ordinary polite request, female speaker)
ได้ครับ ถ้วยกับกระดาษเช็ดปากอยู่ในตู้ใช่ไหมครับ
dai khrap thuai kap kradat chet pak yu nai tu chai mai khrap
Sure. The cups and napkins are in the cupboard, right? (ordinary polite confirmation, male speaker)
The reply omits ขนมกับกาแฟ because the pickup task remains active. The new objects are stated when the request changes. Thai omits recoverable material, not material that distinguishes one list from another.
Common Mistakes
1. Using nominal กับ between complete events
❌ ฉันจองห้องกับส่งแผนที่ให้ทุกคนค่ะ
Incorrect—จองห้อง and ส่งแผนที่ are two asserted events, not two nouns in one slot.
✅ ฉันจองห้องแล้วก็ส่งแผนที่ให้ทุกคนค่ะ
chan chong hong laeo ko song phaenthi hai thuk khon kha
I booked the room and then sent everyone the map. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
2. Putting the polite particle inside the coordinated phrase
❌ ขอชาเย็นครับกับกาแฟร้อนครับ
Incorrect neutral order—the polite particle presents the whole turn and normally follows the complete list.
✅ ขอชาเย็นกับกาแฟร้อนครับ
kho cha yen kap kafae ron khrap
I'd like an iced tea and a hot coffee, please. (ordinary polite order, male speaker)
3. Copying English plural agreement
❌ คุณฝนกับคุณบีเป็นอยู่ที่ห้องประชุมค่ะ
Incorrect—Thai does not add an English-like plural form of ‘be’ before the location predicate.
✅ คุณฝนกับคุณบีอยู่ที่ห้องประชุมค่ะ
khun fon kap khun bi yu thi hong prachum kha
Khun Fon and Khun Bee are in the meeting room. (ordinary polite location statement, female speaker)
4. Dropping the classifier from the second measured noun
❌ ขอเค้กสองชิ้นกับกาแฟสามครับ
Incorrect—the coffee quantity needs its own classifier; coordination does not make ชิ้น apply to drinks.
✅ ขอเค้กสองชิ้นกับกาแฟสามแก้วครับ
kho khek song chin kap kafae sam kaeo khrap
I'd like two pieces of cake and three coffees, please. (ordinary polite order, male speaker)
5. Reading every postverbal กับ as “and”
❌ ผมไปตลาดกับน้าครับ
Wrong for the intended coordinated-subject meaning—after the motion event, กับน้า presents the aunt or uncle as a companion.
✅ ผมกับน้าจะไปตลาดครับ
phom kap na cha pai talat khrap
My aunt or uncle and I will go to the market. (ordinary polite coordinated-subject plan, male speaker)
Key Takeaways
- Put กับ between two noun phrases that occupy one subject, object, or list slot.
- Use position and predicate meaning to distinguish noun coordination from กับ + companion/partner.
- Keep each measured noun's classifier phrase complete; Thai verbs do not acquire plural agreement.
- Use relation-specific linkers, not nominal กับ, to connect complete events or propositions.
