พวก placed before a person-reference form foregrounds that referent as a group: พวกเรา “we/us as a group,” พวกเขา “they/them,” and พวกคุณ “you as a group.” It is useful when plurality, group identity, or contrast matters. It is not an obligatory plural suffix like English -s, and Thai does not add it to every pronoun merely because several people are involved.
The choice after พวก still carries social meaning. พวกคุณ can sound directly contrastive, พวกเธอ often addresses familiar juniors, and พวกมัน is ordinary for animals or things but disparaging for people. A group noun, names, a title, ทุกคน “everyone,” an exact numeral phrase, or zero may be more natural in a particular sentence.
Minimal contrast: bare, grouped, and omitted
เขาจะมาถึงตอนบ่ายค่ะ
khao cha ma thueng ton bai kha
He/She/They will arrive this afternoon. (polite, female speaker; number depends on context)
พวกเขาจะมาถึงตอนบ่ายค่ะ
phuak khao cha ma thueng ton bai kha
They will arrive this afternoon. (polite, female speaker; group explicitly foregrounded)
ทีมช่างจะมาถึงตอนบ่ายค่ะ แล้วจะเริ่มงานทันที
thim chang cha ma thueng ton bai kha laeo cha roem ngan thanthi
The technical team will arrive this afternoon and begin work immediately. (polite, female speaker; group noun followed by zero)
Bare เขา can receive a plural reading from context. พวกเขา explicitly packages the referents as a group. ทีมช่าง names the relevant role and then permits omission. English strongly distinguishes he/she from they; Thai can leave number to the discourse unless it matters.
The main combinations
| Form | Core reference | Social or discourse effect |
|---|---|---|
| พวกเรา | we/us | speaker's group foregrounded; inclusion inferred |
| พวกผม | we/us | male speaker's group; normally excludes addressee |
| พวกฉัน | we/us | typically a female speaker's familiar group; informal |
| พวกคุณ | you all | explicit addressed group; may sound contrastive |
| พวกเขา | they/them | neutral human third-person group |
| พวกเธอ | you all / they | familiar juniors, or literary female group |
| พวกมัน | they/them | animals/things; disparaging for humans |
พวกผมตรวจเอกสารครบแล้วครับ
phuak phom truat ekkasan khrop laeo khrap
My colleagues and I have checked all the documents. (polite, male spokesperson; addressee normally outside the group)
พวกเขารออยู่หน้าร้านค่ะ
phuak khao ro yu na ran kha
They are waiting in front of the shop. (polite, female speaker; neutral human group)
พวกผม is not several instances of “I.” It means “the group associated with me,” with ผม identifying the spokesperson. Likewise, พวกคุณ packages the people associated with “you” as an addressed set.
In พวกผม and พวกฉัน, the gender tendency belongs to the spokesperson, not to every member of the group. A male speaker can use พวกผม for a mixed group, for example.
พวกเรา and inclusion
พวกเรา unmistakably contains the speaker, but it does not grammatically guarantee that the addressee is included. Context may give inclusive “all of us here” or exclusive “my group, not you.” พวกผม more clearly presents a male speaker's side and usually excludes the listener; พวกฉัน is an (informal) speaker-group form.
พวกเราไปกินข้าวด้วยกันไหมคะ
phuak rao pai kin khao duai kan mai kha
Shall we all go eat together? (polite, female speaker; ด้วยกัน and the invitation include the addressee)
พวกเราจะประชุมกันก่อน คุณเข้ามาตอนบ่ายนะครับ
phuak rao cha prachum kan kon khun khao ma ton bai na khrap
Our group will meet first; please come in this afternoon. (polite, male spokesperson; addressee excluded)
The pronoun is identical. The joint invitation in the first sentence includes the listener; the contrasting instruction in the second excludes the listener. When membership has practical consequences, name the people or say เราสามคน “the three of us,” ทีมของเรา “our team,” or เราทุกคนในห้องนี้ “all of us in this room.”
Addressing a group
พวกคุณ clearly selects an addressed group. It can be appropriate when distinguishing that group from another, but repeated use may sound distancing or accusatory. ทุกคน “everyone,” คุณสองคน “you two,” a role such as ผู้สมัคร “applicants,” or zero often provides smoother group address.
พวกคุณรับผิดชอบส่วนนี้ ส่วนพวกเราจะดูแลงบประมาณค่ะ
phuak khun rapphitchop suan ni suan phuak rao cha dula ngoppraman kha
Your group is responsible for this section, while ours will handle the budget. (polite, female speaker; explicit group contrast)
ทุกคนส่งแบบฟอร์มก่อนเที่ยงนะครับ
thuk khon song baep fom kon thiang na khrap
Everyone, submit the form before noon. (polite, male speaker; neutral group instruction)
พวกเธอ is (informal) and typically downward-directed or familiar when it means “you all.” An adult might use it to familiar younger people; it is not a neutral way to address senior colleagues.
พวกเธอทำเสร็จแล้วก็กลับบ้านได้เลย
phuak thoe tham set laeo ko klap ban dai loei
Once you all finish, you can go straight home. (informal; adult addressing familiar juniors)
Third-person groups: people, animals, and things
พวกเขา is the broadly neutral choice for a human group. พวกมัน suits established animals or things; for people it normally conveys contempt, anger, dehumanization, or strong in-group roughness.
นักศึกษากลุ่มนี้เตรียมตัวมาดีครับ พวกเขาตอบคำถามได้ครบ
naksueksa klum ni triam tua ma di khrap phuak khao top khamtham dai khrop
This group of students came well prepared; they answered every question. (polite, male speaker; neutral human group)
ลูกแมวอยู่ในกล่องค่ะ พวกมันเพิ่งลืมตา
luk maeo yu nai klong kha phuak man phoeng luem ta
The kittens are in the box; they have only just opened their eyes. (polite, female speaker; animal group)
Once a plural noun phrase has established the group, zero is often enough. Repeating พวกเขา after every verb is as heavy as repeating a singular pronoun after every clause.
Exact number and totality
For people, a numeral normally takes the classifier คน: พวกเขาสามคน “the three of them,” คุณสองคน “you two,” พวกเราห้าคน “the five of us.” ทั้งสอง “both” and ทุกคน “everyone” express totality without treating พวก as a general plural suffix.
พวกเขาสามคนแชร์ห้องเดียวกันค่ะ
phuak khao sam khon chae hong diao kan kha
The three of them share one room. (polite, female speaker; exact group size)
เราทั้งสองฝ่ายเห็นด้วยกับข้อเสนอนี้ครับ
rao thang song fai hen duai kap khosanoe ni khrap
Both sides agree with this proposal. (formal, male spokesperson; two parties rather than two individuals)
The classifier follows the numeral: pronoun + numeral + คน. พวก may precede the pronoun when group identity is also foregrounded. With a clearly established small set, พวก can be unnecessary.
Case, possession, and omission
Grouped forms do not inflect for case. พวกเขา can be subject or object; ของพวกเขา marks explicit possession.
ฉันส่งแผนที่ให้พวกเขาแล้วค่ะ
chan song phaenthi hai phuak khao laeo kha
I've sent them the map. (polite, female speaker; พวกเขา as recipient)
นี่เป็นโต๊ะของพวกเราครับ
ni pen to khong phuak rao khrap
This is our group's table. (polite, male speaker; explicit possession)
After the group is stable, omit it where roles remain obvious. Restore a group form at a contrast, topic shift, or possible ambiguity.
The same noun + ของ + possessor order applies across singular and grouped forms; see possessive reference with ของ.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
พวกคุณเดินทางมาด้วยกันไหมคะ
phuak khun doen thang ma duai kan mai kha
Did your group travel here together? (polite, female interviewer; explicit addressed group)
ใช่ครับ พวกเรานั่งรถมาคันเดียวกัน
chai khrap phuak rao nang rot ma khan diao kan
Yes. We all came in the same car. (polite, male spokesperson)
The female speaker uses question คะ; the male respondent uses ครับ. The particles do not agree with the number or gender composition of either group.
Common Mistakes
1. Adding พวก to every plural translation
❌ ทีมงานมาถึงแล้ว พวกเขากำลังจัดห้อง แล้วพวกเขาจะตรวจอุปกรณ์ค่ะ
Incorrect discourse choice — พวกเขา is repeated mechanically for one stable team.
✅ ทีมงานมาถึงแล้วค่ะ กำลังจัดห้อง แล้วจะตรวจอุปกรณ์
thim ngan ma thueng laeo kha kamlang chat hong laeo cha truat upakon
Correct — the team has arrived, is arranging the room, and will then check the equipment. (polite, female speaker; group omitted after establishment)
2. Assuming พวกเรา always includes the listener
❌ พวกเราจะกลับก่อน
Ambiguous for the intended invitation — พวกเรา alone does not tell the listener whether they are included.
✅ พวกเราไปด้วยกันไหม
phuak rao pai duai kan mai
Correct — shall we go together? (informal; the invitation makes inclusion clear)
3. Using พวกมัน as neutral human they
❌ ลูกค้ามาถึงแล้ว พวกมันรออยู่ข้างนอกค่ะ
Incorrect social choice — พวกมัน is disparaging when it refers to customers.
✅ ลูกค้ามาถึงแล้วค่ะ พวกเขารออยู่ข้างนอก
lukkha ma thueng laeo kha phuak khao ro yu khang nok
Correct — the customers have arrived; they are waiting outside. (polite, female speaker)
4. Omitting คน after an exact human number
❌ พวกเขาสามจะพักห้องนี้ครับ
Incorrect — a numeral counting people requires คน.
✅ พวกเขาสามคนจะพักห้องนี้ครับ
phuak khao sam khon cha phak hong ni khrap
Correct — the three of them will stay in this room. (polite, male speaker)
5. Making a particle agree with the group
❌ พวกเขาจะมาพรุ่งนี้ครับ
Incorrect for the intended female speaker — ครับ does not mark a male group.
✅ พวกเขาจะมาพรุ่งนี้ค่ะ
phuak khao cha ma phrung ni kha
Correct — they will come tomorrow. (polite, female speaker)
Key Takeaways
พวก foregrounds grouphood in forms such as พวกเรา, พวกเขา, and พวกคุณ; it is not required every time English has a plural pronoun. พวกเรา contains the speaker but leaves addressee inclusion to context. พวกคุณ can be contrastive, พวกเธอ is familiar or downward-directed, and human พวกมัน is disparaging. Use numeral + คน for an exact human count, ของ for explicit possession, and zero once the group remains recoverable.
