มัน is a common third-person form for established things, animals, and sometimes whole situations. โทรศัพท์อยู่บนโต๊ะ แต่มันเปิดไม่ติด means “The phone is on the table, but it will not turn on.” It carries no grammatical gender and does not change form as subject or object.
With a human referent, however, มัน is socially marked. Close speakers may use it about an absent friend with in-group intimacy, while hostile use can belittle or disparage the person. Learners should never substitute มัน mechanically for English he, she, or human singular they in neutral polite speech.
Minimal contrast: thing, human, and zero
เครื่องพิมพ์เสียค่ะ มันไม่รับกระดาษ
khrueang phim sia kha man mai rap kradat
The printer is broken; it will not feed paper. (polite, female speaker; ordinary thing reference)
ช่างมาถึงแล้วครับ เขากำลังตรวจเครื่องพิมพ์
chang ma thueng laeo khrap khao kamlang truat khrueang phim
The technician has arrived; they are checking the printer. (polite, male speaker; neutral human เขา)
แก้ได้แล้วครับ ตอนนี้ใช้ได้ตามปกติ
kae dai laeo khrap ton ni chai dai tam pokkati
It has been fixed; now it works normally. (polite, male speaker; printer omitted once recoverable)
The device readily takes มัน. The technician takes neutral human เขา. The final turn omits the device because its reference remains obvious. Thai chooses among noun, pronoun, and zero rather than repeating a single equivalent of English it.
Productive slots
มัน does not inflect for case. Number and respect are separate choices.
| Role | Thai frame | Typical interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| thing as subject | มันเสียแล้ว | it is broken |
| thing/animal as object | ฉันหามันไม่เจอ | I cannot find it |
| possessor | ของมัน | its; animal/thing possessor |
| explicit group | พวกมัน | they; animals/things, or disparaging humans |
| neutral human | เขามาแล้ว | he/she/they has arrived |
| zero | เสียแล้ว | is broken; topic recoverable |
ฉันวางกุญแจไว้ตรงนี้ แต่ตอนนี้หาไม่เจอแล้วค่ะ
chan wang kunchae wai trong ni tae ton ni ha mai choe laeo kha
I left the key here, but now I cannot find it. (polite, female speaker; key omitted naturally)
An overt มัน is possible when contrast, emphasis, or a competing object makes it useful. English requires it in many such clauses; Thai often does not.
Things and situation-sized antecedents
มัน can refer to a concrete object or to an event, idea, or situation already under discussion. The antecedent need not be a single noun.
อย่าเพิ่งทิ้งกล่องนะคะ ฉันยังต้องใช้มันค่ะ
ya phoeng thing klong na kha chan yang tong chai man kha
Please don't throw the box away yet; I still need it. (polite, female speaker; box as object)
การย้ายบ้านเหนื่อยมาก แต่มันก็คุ้มครับ
kan yai ban nueai mak tae man ko khum khrap
Moving house is exhausting, but it is worth it. (polite, male speaker; มัน refers to the whole situation)
มันยากกว่าที่เราคิดไว้ค่ะ
man yak kwa thi rao khit wai kha
It is harder than we expected. (polite, female speaker; situation understood from context)
This situational use resembles English it, but it is not a compulsory dummy subject. Thai weather expressions normally say ฝนตก “it is raining” and อากาศร้อน “the weather is hot,” without inserting มัน merely to fill a subject slot.
Animals and pets
มัน is ordinary for many animals when no personal name or affectionate role is foregrounded. The noun or classifier establishes the animal; มัน can then maintain reference.
แมวตัวนี้กลัวคนแปลกหน้าค่ะ มันชอบซ่อนใต้เตียง
maeo tua ni klua khon plaek na kha man chop son tai tiang
This cat is afraid of strangers; it likes hiding under the bed. (polite, female speaker)
หมากินข้าวแล้วครับ ตอนนี้มันนอนอยู่หน้าบ้าน
ma kin khao laeo khrap ton ni man non yu na ban
The dog has eaten; now it is sleeping in front of the house. (polite, male speaker)
Calling a pet by its name can express stronger individual attachment. Using มัน for an animal is not inherently cruel, but social meaning depends on the speaker's relationship and tone.
Human มัน: intimate or disparaging
Among close friends, speakers may use มัน (informal, in-group) for an absent peer, sometimes with warmth or teasing. In another tone, the same form is (disparaging) and reduces respect. With a stranger, senior, client, or person being discussed politely, choose เขา, ท่าน, a title, name, or zero.
ไอ้ต้นมันลืมกุญแจอีกแล้ว
ai ton man luem kunchae ik laeo
Ton forgot his key again. (vulgar/very informal male-peer teasing; ไอ้ and human มัน are socially marked)
ผู้จัดการแจ้งว่าจะมาสายค่ะ ท่านติดประชุมอยู่
phuchatkan chaeng wa cha ma sai kha than tit prachum yu
The manager said they would be late; they are in a meeting. (formal-respectful, female speaker)
The first should not be copied outside an established intimate peer group; ไอ้ can be insulting. The second maintains respect through title + ท่าน. Register is part of reference, not decoration.
Number and พวกมัน
Bare มัน normally tracks one salient referent, though number can be inferred. พวกมัน foregrounds a group of animals or things. Applied to people, พวกมัน is normally hostile or dehumanizing.
ลูกหมาสามตัวกำลังเล่นกันค่ะ พวกมันไม่ยอมนอน
luk ma sam tua kamlang len kan kha phuak man mai yom non
Three puppies are playing; they refuse to sleep. (polite, female speaker; animal group)
Do not add พวก automatically whenever English uses plural they. Repeating the animal noun, using a number phrase, or omitting reference may be clearer. See plural pronouns with พวก.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
เครื่องชงกาแฟมีปัญหาอะไรคะ
khrueang chong kafae mi panha arai kha
What is wrong with the coffee machine? (polite, female speaker)
มันรั่วตรงด้านล่างครับ แต่ยังเปิดได้
man rua trong dan lang khrap tae yang poet dai
It leaks at the bottom, but it still turns on. (polite, male speaker; machine maintained with มัน, then omitted)
The object is explicit in the question, pronominal in the first reply clause, and zero in the second. The particles identify the speakers, not the machine.
Common Mistakes
1. Using มัน as neutral polite human reference
❌ คุณหมอมาถึงแล้ว มันรออยู่ข้างในค่ะ
Incorrect register — human มัน disparages or over-familiarizes the doctor.
✅ คุณหมอมาถึงแล้ว ท่านรออยู่ข้างในค่ะ
khun mo ma thueng laeo than ro yu khang nai kha
Correct — the doctor has arrived and is waiting inside. (formal-respectful, female speaker)
2. Inserting a dummy มัน into weather expressions
❌ วันนี้มันฝนตกหนัก
Incorrect standard weather structure — ฝน itself is the subject of ตก.
✅ วันนี้ฝนตกหนักครับ
wan ni fon tok nak khrap
Correct — it is raining heavily today. (polite, male speaker)
3. Repeating มัน after the object stays clear
❌ โทรศัพท์ตกแล้วมันแตกแล้วมันเปิดไม่ติดค่ะ
Incorrect discourse choice — repeated มัน makes one stable device topic heavy.
✅ โทรศัพท์ตกแล้ว หน้าจอแตก เปิดไม่ติดค่ะ
thorasap tok laeo nacho taek poet mai tit kha
Correct — the phone fell; its screen cracked and it will not turn on. (polite, female speaker)
4. Omitting the animal classifier in an exact group
❌ พวกมันสามวิ่งออกไปแล้ว
Incorrect counted-group structure — the numeral needs the animal classifier ตัว.
✅ พวกมันสามตัววิ่งออกไปแล้วครับ
phuak man sam tua wing ok pai laeo khrap
Correct — the three of them ran out. (polite, male speaker; animals established)
5. Treating มัน as obligatory English it
❌ ฉันเจอกระเป๋าแล้ว ฉันเอามันกลับมาแล้วค่ะ
Incorrect discourse choice — both repeated ฉัน and overt มัน are unnecessarily mechanical here.
✅ เจอกระเป๋าแล้วค่ะ เอากลับมาแล้ว
choe krapao laeo kha ao klap ma laeo
Correct — I found the bag and brought it back. (polite, female speaker; subject and object recoverable)
Key Takeaways
มัน is ordinary for things, animals, and previously discussed situations, but it is not a mandatory dummy subject. Human มัน is socially marked as intimate, teasing, or disparaging; neutral people take เขา, ท่าน, names, titles, or zero. มัน has no case or gender inflection, พวกมัน foregrounds a group, and stable reference is often omitted instead of repeated.
