และ is Thai’s neutral-to-written coordinator: it joins two elements that have the same role and presents both as true or included. It can connect noun phrases, property predicates, actions, or whole clauses. Everyday conversation often chooses กับ, simple juxtaposition, แล้วก็, or another linker instead, so English and is not replaced by และ mechanically.

What และ can join
The two sides should be structurally and semantically parallel. With nouns, และ is clear and neutral, especially in announcements and writing.

With predicates, one subject can scope over both actions or properties. Thai normally omits the repeated subject because the participant remains recoverable.
ห้องนี้กว้างและสว่างค่ะ
hong ni kwang lae sawang kha
This room is spacious and bright. (ordinary polite assessment, female speaker)
ผมตรวจยอดเงินและแจ้งผลให้ลูกค้าแล้วครับ

With full clauses, each side may have its own actor. State the second actor when it changes; omission otherwise encourages the listener to continue the first subject.
ฝ่ายบัญชีตรวจใบเสร็จแล้ว และผู้จัดการจะอนุมัติค่าใช้จ่ายพรุ่งนี้ค่ะ

ทั้ง A และ B marks explicit “both…and.” ทั้ง opens the set and และ introduces the second member. The pair can coordinate nouns or parallel predicates.

The parts after ทั้ง and และ should match. A noun coordinated with a full clause makes the listener reconstruct the relation and may sound carelessly edited.
และ versus กับ, แล้วก็, and no linker
For two noun phrases, conversational Thai often uses กับ. และ sounds more careful, neutral, or written. With people, กับ can also mean “with,” so context distinguishes coordination from accompaniment.
เย็นนี้ฉันไปกินข้าวกับเพื่อนค่ะ
yen ni chan pai kin khao kap phuean kha
This evening I'm going to eat with a friend. (ordinary polite conversation, female speaker; accompaniment)
ผู้สมัครและผู้ติดตามต้องแสดงบัตรประจำตัวค่ะ
phu samak lae phu tit tam tong sadaeng bat pracham tua kha
Applicants and accompanying persons must show identification. (formal public instruction, female voice; coordination)
และ adds events but does not itself encode their chronology. If the order matters in conversation, แล้ว/แล้วก็ explicitly advances the sequence.
เขาเปิดกล่องและอ่านจดหมายค่ะ
khao poet klong lae an chotmai kha
She opened the box and read the letter. (neutral narrative; world knowledge suggests the order)
เขาเปิดกล่อง แล้วก็หยิบจดหมายออกมาอ่านค่ะ

She opened the box, then took out the letter and read it. (ordinary conversational narrative; explicit progression)
In short spoken lists or rapid sequences, Thai can omit a linker. The relation is then inferred from parallel shape and context, not encoded by an invisible และ.
ซื้อไข่ นม ขนมปังมาด้วยนะคะ
sue khai nom khanom pang ma duai na kha
Please buy eggs, milk, and bread too. (ordinary polite spoken list, female speaker)
Punctuation and scope
Thai does not require an English-style comma before the final และ. In a short list, spacing and the coordinator are enough. In formal prose, punctuation may separate long clauses for readability, but punctuation does not repair unclear participant tracking.
The scope of shared words matters. A single modal, negator, or time phrase before two coordinated predicates can naturally apply to both when the structure is parallel.
พรุ่งนี้เราอาจเลื่อนประชุมและเปลี่ยนสถานที่ค่ะ
phrung ni rao at luean prachum lae plian sathan thi kha
Tomorrow we may postpone the meeting and change the venue. (ordinary polite update, female speaker; อาจ naturally scopes over both actions)
If only one half is negative, place the negator inside that half.
วันนี้ผมเข้าประชุม แต่ไม่อยู่รับประทานอาหารเย็นครับ
wan ni phom khao prachum tae mai yu rapprathan ahan yen khrap
Today I'll attend the meeting, but I won't stay for dinner. (ordinary polite contrast, male speaker)
This example uses แต่, not และ, because the speaker frames the two facts as a contrast. A coordinator signals the discourse relation as well as connecting structures.

Common Mistakes
1. Repeating the same subject mechanically
❌ ผมตรวจเอกสารและผมส่งให้หัวหน้าแล้วครับ
Grammatically recoverable but needlessly repetitive in one continuous event sequence.

2. Omitting a changed subject

Wrong for the intended two actors; omission makes ผม the understood presenter and also mismatches the female particle.

3. Using และ for an explicit sequence
❌ ชำระเงินและระบบจะส่งใบเสร็จให้ค่ะ
Awkward for an instruction where the second event follows from completing the first.
✅ ชำระเงินแล้วระบบจะส่งใบเสร็จให้ค่ะ

4. Mixing unlike structures after ทั้ง...และ...

Poor parallelism—a noun follows ทั้ง but a full predicate follows และ.
