Do Not Conjugate Thai Verbs

English verbs change form for person and time: work/works/worked, go/went/gone, am/is/are. Thai verbs do not. ทำงาน remains ทำงาน with every subject and at every time, while time expressions, aspect words, modal expressions, event order, and context build the intended viewpoint around it.

The common error is not simply a bad ending. It is the assumption that every English finite verb must correspond to one specially marked Thai verb form. Repair the whole clause: establish time, decide whether progress, completion, experience, or prospect matters, then leave the lexical verb unchanged. See invariant Thai verbs for the full positive system.

Pair 1: no third-person singular ending

❌ เขากินส์ข้าวกลางวันที่โรงอาหารทุกวันครับ

Incorrect—invented third-person ending on กิน.

✅ เขากินข้าวกลางวันที่โรงอาหารทุกวันครับ

khao kin khao klangwan thi rongahan thuk wan khrap

He eats lunch in the cafeteria every day. (ordinary-polite habitual statement, male speaker)

English he eats contrasts with I eat. Thai กิน does not agree with เขา. ทุกวัน supplies the habitual time frame; no present-tense ending is missing.

💡
Learn one form per Thai verb, then learn the constructions that surround it. A table of กิน, กำลังกิน, กินแล้ว, เคยกิน, and จะกิน is useful; a person-by-person conjugation table is not.

Pair 2: plural subjects do not trigger agreement

❌ พนักงานสองคนนี้พูดส์ภาษาจีนได้ค่ะ

Incorrect—plurality in the subject does not change พูด.

✅ พนักงานสองคนนี้พูดภาษาจีนได้ค่ะ

phanakngan song khon ni phut phasa chin dai kha

These two employees can speak Chinese. (ordinary-polite workplace statement, female speaker)

สองคน counts the employees. ได้ after the verb expresses ability in this context. Neither element is an agreement suffix, and พูด stays identical with one speaker or a whole group.

Pair 3: English progressive be is not เป็น

❌ ตอนนี้ฉันเป็นตรวจใบสมัครอยู่ค่ะ

Incorrect transfer of English ‘am reviewing’—เป็น does not form an action progressive.

✅ ตอนนี้ฉันกำลังตรวจใบสมัครอยู่ค่ะ

ton ni chan kamlang truat bai samak yu kha

I'm reviewing the application right now. (ordinary-polite report, female speaker)

Thai can frame an unfolding action with กำลัง + verb, optionally reinforced by postverbal อยู่. เป็น classifies or identifies; it is not an inflected form of English be. The order and lexical category must be rebuilt rather than translated token by token.

Pair 4: past time need not receive a past marker

❌ เมื่อวานผมส่งใบเสนอราคาอยู่ครับ

Wrong for the intended completed report—อยู่ presents the sending as ongoing or continuing, not merely past.

✅ เมื่อวานผมส่งใบเสนอราคาครับ

muea wan phom song bai sanoe rakha khrap

Yesterday I sent the quotation. (ordinary-polite completed report, male speaker)

เมื่อวาน locates the event in the past, so no general past marker is required. แล้ว could be added if attained completion or current relevance mattered, but it would contribute that viewpoint rather than past tense. The rejected sentence can be grammatical in a context such as “I was in the middle of sending it yesterday,” but it does not express the intended completed event.

Pair 5: do not manufacture English have + participle

❌ ฉันมีส่งเอกสารให้ฝ่ายบัญชีแล้วค่ะ

Incorrect English-shaped perfect—มี cannot serve as a general auxiliary corresponding to ‘have.’

✅ ฉันส่งเอกสารให้ฝ่ายบัญชีแล้วค่ะ

chan song ekkasan hai fai banchi laeo kha

I've sent the documents to Accounting. (ordinary-polite report, female speaker)

Thai มี means “have/exist” in its own constructions. English have in have sent is an auxiliary, not possession, so it receives no word-for-word Thai equivalent. แล้ว and the current task context make completion relevant.

Pair 6: English did is not lexical ทำ

❌ คุณทำไปเชียงใหม่สุดสัปดาห์ที่แล้วไหมครับ

Incorrect transfer of auxiliary ‘did’—ทำ retains its lexical meaning ‘do/make.’

✅ คุณไปเชียงใหม่สุดสัปดาห์ที่แล้วไหมครับ

khun pai chiang mai sut sapda thi laeo mai khrap

Did you go to Chiang Mai last weekend? (ordinary-polite question, male speaker)

English inserts did to carry tense and question syntax. Thai leaves ไป unchanged, uses the past-time phrase, and adds ไหม for a neutral yes–no question. Putting ทำ before ไป does not create a past tense.

💡
Ask whether an English be, have, or do is a lexical verb or an auxiliary. Translate lexical meanings such as “own,” “make,” or “exist”; rebuild auxiliary functions with Thai syntax.

Pair 7: future reference is not an inflected verb

❌ พรุ่งนี้เราประชุมแล้วตอนบ่ายสองค่ะ

Wrong for the intended simple plan—แล้ว presents prior transition or completion, not a neutral future ending.

✅ พรุ่งนี้เราจะประชุมกันตอนบ่ายสองค่ะ

phrung ni rao cha prachum kan ton bai song kha

Tomorrow we'll meet at two in the afternoon. (ordinary-polite planned event, female speaker)

จะ commonly marks prospect, intention, or prediction. It is not obligatory whenever English uses will: a fixed schedule plus พรุ่งนี้ can establish future time without it. Conversely, แล้ว can occur with future reference in a “by then, completed” context, so the rejected form is a scope mismatch rather than proof that แล้ว is inherently past.

Pair 8: progressive marking depends on event type

❌ พอเห็นตารางนี้ ฉันกำลังรู้ว่าคำนวณผิดตรงไหนค่ะ

Unnatural neutral progressive—รู้ describes a state of knowing rather than an unfolding action.

✅ พอเห็นตารางนี้ ฉันก็รู้แล้วว่าคำนวณผิดตรงไหนค่ะ

pho hen tarang ni chan ko ru laeo wa khamnuan phit trong nai kha

Once I saw this table, I knew where the calculation was wrong. (ordinary-polite realization, female speaker)

English can say I am understanding in marked contexts, but ordinary know is stative. Thai กำลัง likewise prefers a dynamic, unfolding process. The correction uses แล้ว to present the transition into knowing. Aspect selection follows the event's internal shape; it is not mechanical tense conjugation.

Pair 9: negative past is not one conjugated form

❌ เมื่อคืนเขาไม่กลับแล้วบ้านครับ

Incorrect placement and scope—แล้ว cannot be inserted as a past ending inside the predicate.

✅ เมื่อคืนเขาไม่ได้กลับบ้านครับ

muea khuen khao mai dai klap ban khrap

He didn't go home last night. (ordinary-polite report, male speaker)

Preverbal ไม่ได้ commonly denies that an event occurred or was realized. By contrast, ไม่กลับแล้ว can mean “is not returning anymore.” Those are different scopes, not two conjugations of กลับ.

Pair 10: experience uses เคย, not a special past stem

❌ คุณลองแล้วร้านเปิดใหม่แถวสถานีไหมคะ

Wrong order for asking about prior experience—แล้ว cannot be inserted between the verb and its object as an English past ending.

✅ คุณเคยลองร้านเปิดใหม่แถวสถานีไหมคะ

khun khoei long ran poet mai thaeo sathani mai kha

Have you ever tried the new place near the station? (ordinary-polite question, female speaker)

เคย + verb asks about experience at some time before now. ลองแล้ว can be grammatical when reporting that the trying is complete, but it does not by itself form the English present perfect question “have you ever...?”

A misunderstanding caused by auxiliary transfer

A learner translates English did with ทำ. The listener hears the lexical question “do what?” and asks for clarification.

❌ คุณทำไปเชียงใหม่หรือยังครับ

Malformed learner question intended to mean ‘Have you gone to Chiang Mai yet?’

The listener interprets ทำ lexically and therefore asks what action is meant.

✅ ทำอะไรคะ หมายถึงเรื่องงานหรือเปล่า

tham arai kha mai thueng rueang ngan rue plao

Do what? Do you mean something about work? (natural ordinary-polite reaction to lexical ทำ, female listener)

ผมหมายถึงคุณไปเชียงใหม่หรือยังครับ

phom mai thueng khun pai chiang mai rue yang khrap

I mean, have you gone to Chiang Mai yet? (ordinary-polite self-correction, male learner)

อ๋อ ไปมาแล้วค่ะ สนุกมาก

o pai ma laeo kha sanuk mak

Oh, yes, I've been. It was great. (ordinary-polite reply, female speaker)

The repair removes lexical ทำ and uses ไป...หรือยัง, a Thai question frame about whether the trip has occurred yet. The answer ไปมาแล้ว combines motion and current relevance without changing the form ไป.

💡
Markers are meaningful choices, not tense slots to fill. A time phrase may be enough; add กำลัง, อยู่, แล้ว, เคย, จะ, or ไม่ได้ only when its aspectual, modal, or scope contribution is intended.

Editing checklist

  1. Return every lexical verb to its single dictionary form.
  2. Remove endings copied from English person, number, tense, participle, or infinitive morphology.
  3. Locate time with context or an explicit phrase such as เมื่อวาน, ตอนนี้, or พรุ่งนี้.
  4. Decide separately whether the event is unfolding, completed, experienced, prospective, or unrealized.
  5. Translate English be, have, and do only when they carry lexical meaning; otherwise rebuild the Thai construction.
  6. Check the event type before using progressive กำลัง...อยู่.
  7. Check negation scope: ไม่ได้ทำ “did not do” differs from ไม่ทำแล้ว “does not do anymore.”
  8. Confirm that plural or third-person subjects have not changed the verb.

Common Mistakes

The ten pairs above diagnose invented agreement endings, plural agreement, เป็น as progressive be, indiscriminate past marking, มี as perfect have, ทำ as auxiliary do, future mis-marking, progressive statives, negative scope, and experience questions. Several rejected forms contain genuine Thai words that become natural under another viewpoint. Correcting them requires rebuilding time, aspect, modality, and scope—not swapping one “tense marker.”

Key Takeaways

  • Thai lexical verbs do not inflect for person, number, or tense.
  • Time phrases and discourse can locate an event without any additional marker.
  • Aspect and modal words contribute specific viewpoints; they are not verb endings.
  • English auxiliaries must be analyzed for function before a Thai clause is built.
