Choosing ไหม versus หรือเปล่า

Choose clause-final ไหม for the most compact neutral yes–no question. Choose หรือเปล่า when it helps to display the alternatives “P or not P” explicitly, especially in verification and repair. In a wide range of ordinary information questions, both are natural and differ more in discourse packaging than in factual content.

That overlap matters: หรือเปล่า is not automatically impatient, and ไหม is not always warmer. Intonation, relationship, proposition type, and context create those effects. Thai keeps statement word order, leaves verbs invariant, and places either question ending after the complete proposition but before ครับ/คะ.

💡
Do not search for an English auxiliary to translate. Build the Thai proposition first, keep its participant and aspect structure intact, and then choose one clause-final question ending.

Decision tree

1. Is this an ordinary open yes–no question?

Start with ไหม. It asks the listener to accept or reject the proposition without fronting do, be, or have.

พรุ่งนี้สะดวกเข้าประชุมออนไลน์ไหมคะ

phrung ni saduak khao prachum onlai mai kha

Are you available to join the online meeting tomorrow? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

ร้านนี้รับชำระด้วยบัตรไหมครับ

ran ni rap chamra duai bat mai khrap

Does this shop accept card payments? (ordinary polite question, male speaker)

The time expression and payment phrase remain in their ordinary slots. ไหม scopes over the proposition to its left; it does not conjugate สะดวก or รับ. See the basic ไหม question pattern for the complete beginner system.

2. Does “P or not P?” need to be overt, or are you checking what you heard?

Choose หรือเปล่า. Its visible negative alternative can be useful when the listener must verify a fact, when the speaker is repairing the record, or when a contrast between occurrence and nonoccurrence matters.

เมื่อกี้คุณบอกว่าต้องแนบสำเนาทะเบียนบ้านหรือเปล่าคะ

muea ki khun bok wa tong naep samna thabian ban rue plao kha

Did you just say that a copy of the house registration has to be attached? (polite hearing-check, female speaker)

เจ้าหน้าที่โทรมายืนยันนัดหรือเปล่าครับ

chaonathi tho ma yuenyan nat rue plao khrap

Did the officer call to confirm the appointment or not? (ordinary polite verification, male speaker)

These questions do not inherently accuse the listener. A clipped voice or repeated demand can make them pressuring; a calm information-seeking contour remains neutral.

3. Is the writing administrative or formally indirect?

Use หรือไม่ rather than conversational หรือเปล่า (formal). This formal alternative is also common in embedded “whether” clauses.

โปรดตรวจสอบว่าข้อมูลดังกล่าวถูกต้องหรือไม่

prot truat sop wa khomun dang klao thuk tong rue mai

Please verify whether the aforementioned information is correct. (formal administrative instruction)

คณะกรรมการจะพิจารณาว่าโครงการมีความเป็นไปได้หรือไม่

khana kammakan cha phicharana wa khrongkan mi khwam pen pai dai rue mai

The committee will consider whether the project is feasible. (formal report language)

This is a register choice, not a tense choice. In ordinary conversation, โครงการนี้ทำได้หรือเปล่า would be natural; in a written assessment, มีความเป็นไปได้หรือไม่ packages the inquiry institutionally.

Minimal pairs: where both are natural

เย็นนี้คุณจะกลับดึกไหมคะ

yen ni khun cha klap duek mai kha

Will you be home late this evening? (compact neutral question, female speaker)

เย็นนี้คุณจะกลับดึกหรือเปล่าคะ

yen ni khun cha klap duek rue plao kha

Will you be home late this evening or not? (explicit polarity check, female speaker)

The factual answer may be identical. The second makes the two alternatives more visible, which can suit planning, but context determines whether that explicitness feels helpful or insistent.

เครื่องนี้ยังใช้งานได้ไหมครับ

khrueang ni yang chai ngan dai mai khrap

Does this machine still work? (ordinary polite information question, male speaker)

เครื่องนี้ยังใช้งานได้หรือเปล่าครับ

khrueang ni yang chai ngan dai rue plao khrap

Does this machine still work or not? (ordinary polite verification, male speaker)

Here ยัง establishes continuity up to the present. Neither question ending means “still,” and neither selects an English tense.

💡
When both choices fit, let the conversational task decide: use compact ไหม to ask openly; use หรือเปล่า when explicitly checking the positive proposition against its absence helps the listener.

Proposition type and participant structure

Both forms follow verbal and property predicates. With existence, possession, or ability, the natural answers repeat the predicate or modal rather than defaulting to ใช่.

ในห้องประชุมมีปลั๊กไฟพอไหมคะ

nai hong prachum mi plak fai pho mai kha

Are there enough power outlets in the meeting room? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

พรุ่งนี้ส่งเอกสารให้ฝ่ายบัญชีได้หรือเปล่าครับ

phrung ni song ekkasan hai fai banchi dai rue plao khrap

Can we send the documents to accounting tomorrow? (ordinary polite question, male speaker; subject omitted as recoverable)

Natural answer pairs are พอค่ะ / ไม่พอค่ะ and ได้ครับ / ไม่ได้ครับ. If existence itself matters, answer มีค่ะ แต่ไม่พอ “there are some, but not enough.” English yes/no does not license a universal Thai response word.

When participants are recoverable, Thai omits them. At a repair counter, วันนี้รับได้ไหมคะ can mean “Can I pick it up today?” If several items or customers are active, name the participant or object before the ending so scope remains clear.

Negative scope: a crucial non-equivalence

Putting ไม่ inside P asks whether a negative proposition holds. It is not merely a more polite way to ask the corresponding positive question.

พรุ่งนี้คุณจะเข้าประชุมไหมคะ

phrung ni khun cha khao prachum mai kha

Will you attend the meeting tomorrow? (neutral positive proposition, female speaker)

พรุ่งนี้คุณจะไม่เข้าประชุมหรือเปล่าคะ

phrung ni khun cha mai khao prachum rue plao kha

Is it the case that you won't attend the meeting tomorrow? (polite check of a negative proposition, female speaker)

The second is appropriate if someone reported an absence. Without that cue, it can suggest that nonattendance is already under consideration.

ไม่ไปไหม has another possible use: proposing that the group not go. Its scope and intonation differ from a neutral inquiry about an already negative proposition. Add a cue to resolve it.

ฝนตกหนัก คืนนี้เราไม่ไปงานกันไหมคะ

fon tok nak khuen ni rao mai pai ngan kan mai kha

It's raining heavily; shall we not go to the event tonight? (ordinary polite proposal, female speaker)

When neither is the right choice

Do not use either ending after a wh-expression asking for missing content: ใครมา, ไปที่ไหน, ราคาเท่าไร. Do not stack ไหมหรือเปล่า, because both try to close the same polar question. And if two named alternatives are offered, use A หรือ B, not หรือเปล่า.

คุณจะรับชาเขียวหรือกาแฟคะ

khun cha rap cha khiao rue kafae kha

Would you like green tea or coffee? (polite alternative question, female speaker)

คุณจะรับกาแฟหรือเปล่าคะ

khun cha rap kafae rue plao kha

Would you like coffee or not? (polite polar question about coffee, female speaker)

Ordinary-polite dialogue

พรุ่งนี้แวะมารับเอกสารไหมคะ

phrung ni wae ma rap ekkasan mai kha

Will you stop by to collect the documents tomorrow? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

ครับ แต่ยังไม่แน่ใจว่าจะมาทันก่อนเที่ยงหรือเปล่า

khrap tae yang mai nae chai wa cha ma than kon thiang rue plao

Yes, but I'm not yet sure whether I'll make it before noon. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; embedded alternative)

ถ้ามาไม่ทัน ให้ทางเราส่งเอกสารทางไปรษณีย์ไหมคะ

tha ma mai than hai thang rao song ekkasan thang praisani mai kha

If you can't make it, would you like us to send the documents by post? (ordinary polite offer, female speaker)

Formal dialogue

ขอสอบถามว่าผู้สมัครได้ยืนยันการเข้าร่วมหรือไม่คะ

kho soptham wa phu samak dai yuenyan kan khao ruam rue mai kha

May I ask whether the applicant has confirmed attendance? (formal-polite inquiry, female speaker)

ยืนยันแล้วครับ แต่ยังไม่ได้แจ้งความต้องการด้านอาหาร

yuenyan laeo khrap tae yang mai dai chaeng khwam tongkan dan ahan

They have confirmed, but have not yet stated their dietary requirements. (formal-polite reply, male speaker)

Common Mistakes

1. Fronting an English-style question auxiliary

❌ ไหมคุณต้องส่งแบบฟอร์มวันนี้คะ

Incorrect—ไหม follows the complete Thai proposition.

✅ ต้องส่งแบบฟอร์มภายในวันนี้ไหมคะ

tong song baep fom phai nai wan ni mai kha

Does the form have to be submitted by today? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

2. Stacking the two question endings

❌ รถเที่ยวสุดท้ายออกแล้วไหมหรือเปล่าครับ

Incorrect neutral stacking—choose one polar ending.

✅ รถเที่ยวสุดท้ายออกไปแล้วหรือเปล่าครับ

rot thiao sut thai ok pai laeo rue plao khrap

Has the last bus already left? (ordinary polite verification, male speaker)

3. Using statement ค่ะ after a female question

❌ ห้องอาหารยังเปิดอยู่ไหมค่ะ

Incorrect standard female question ending—use คะ after ไหม.

✅ ห้องอาหารของโรงแรมยังเปิดอยู่ไหมคะ

hong ahan khong rongraem yang poet yu mai kha

Is the hotel restaurant still open? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

4. Using หรือเปล่า for two named alternatives

❌ คุณจะจ่ายเงินสดหรือเปล่าบัตรคะ

Incorrect—หรือเปล่า closes a polar question and cannot introduce a second named option.

✅ คุณจะจ่ายเงินสดหรือบัตรคะ

khun cha chai ngoen sot rue bat kha

Will you pay cash or by card? (polite alternative question, female speaker)

5. Answering every question with ใช่

❌ มีห้องว่างไหมครับ — ใช่ค่ะ

Unnatural for the intended existence answer—repeat มี or ไม่มี.

✅ มีห้องว่างไหมครับ — มีค่ะ เหลือหนึ่งห้อง

mi hong wang mai khrap mi kha luea nueng hong

Do you have a room available? — Yes, one room remains. (ordinary polite exchange)

Key Takeaways

  • ไหม is the compact default polar ending; หรือเปล่า explicitly packages the alternative “or not.”
  • Their everyday uses overlap, so context and conversational task matter more than a rigid translation rule.
  • Keep the ending after the complete proposition and before ครับ/คะ.
  • Put negative ไม่ inside the proposition only when you intend to ask whether that negative proposition holds.
  • Use A หรือ B for named alternatives and หรือไม่ for formal “whether (or not).”
