An alternative question presents two or more candidate answers with หรือ “or”: รับชาหรือกาแฟคะ “Would you like tea or coffee?” The listener is expected to select or reject the named alternatives, not simply confirm whether one whole proposition is true.
Thai keeps each alternative in the position where the answer belongs. Nouns, predicates, times, places, and even full clauses can be contrasted. หรือ stands between them, while ครับ/คะ comes after the complete choice. There is no English-style inversion or auxiliary do.
Put หรือ at the point of choice
| Choice type | Productive frame | Model answer |
|---|---|---|
| object | verb + A + หรือ + B | B |
| time | event + time A + หรือ + time B | time A |
| place | event + place A + หรือ + place B | place B |
| predicate | subject + predicate A + หรือ + predicate B | predicate A |
| full event | clause A + หรือ + clause B | one clause/value |
| three choices | A, B + หรือ + C | A/B/C |
จะชำระเงินสดหรือโอนผ่านธนาคารคะ
cha chamra ngoen sot rue on phan thanakhan kha
Will you pay cash or transfer the money through the bank? (ordinary polite alternative question, female speaker; payment method is the choice)
โอนผ่านธนาคารครับ
on phan thanakhan khrap
By bank transfer. (ordinary polite answer, male speaker; selected alternative repeated)
คุณต้องการห้องเตียงเดี่ยวหรือห้องเตียงคู่ครับ
khun tongkan hong tiang diao rue hong tiang khu khrap
Would you like a single-bed room or a double-bed room? (ordinary polite service question, male speaker)
ขอห้องเตียงคู่ค่ะ
kho hong tiang khu kha
A double-bed room, please. (ordinary polite answer, female speaker)
The alternatives occupy the object/complement slot after ชำระ or ต้องการ. English places will you or would you before the subject; Thai simply retains the predicate and inserts the candidates where an answer would occur.
Alternatives can be times, places, or predicates
The repeated material need not be spoken twice. A shared subject and predicate can introduce two times or places, while a shared subject can govern two different predicates.
เราจะประชุมวันพุธหรือวันพฤหัสบดีคะ
rao cha prachum wan phut rue wan pharuehatsabodi kha
Will we meet on Wednesday or Thursday? (ordinary polite planning question, female speaker; time alternatives)
ให้ส่งเอกสารไปที่สำนักงานหรือที่บ้านครับ
hai song ekkasan pai thi samnakngan rue thi ban khrap
Should the documents be sent to the office or to your home? (ordinary polite question, male speaker; destination alternatives)
พรุ่งนี้คุณจะมาที่สำนักงานหรือทำงานจากบ้านคะ
phrung ni khun cha ma thi samnakngan rue tham ngan chak ban kha
Tomorrow, will you come to the office or work from home? (ordinary polite alternative question, female speaker; predicate alternatives)
ทำงานจากบ้านครับ เพราะต้องรอช่างมาซ่อมแอร์
tham ngan chak ban khrap phro tong ro chang ma som ae
I'll work from home because I have to wait for a technician to repair the air conditioner. (ordinary polite answer, male speaker)
Time and prospective meaning stay inside the proposition: พรุ่งนี้ and จะ do their normal work. Neither alternative verb is conjugated. When the alternatives have different participants or internal structure, state both clauses clearly:
คุณจะมารับเอง หรือให้บริษัทส่งถึงบ้านคะ
khun cha ma rap eng rue hai borisat song thueng ban kha
Will you pick it up yourself, or should the company deliver it to your home? (ordinary polite alternative question, female speaker; two fuller event choices)
The space before หรือ marks a natural phrase boundary between longer alternatives; it is not artificial word segmentation.
More than two alternatives
In a list, Thai normally places หรือ before the final choice. Spoken pauses or punctuation may separate earlier candidates.
คุณสะดวกวันศุกร์ วันเสาร์ หรือวันอาทิตย์ครับ
khun saduak wan suk wan sao rue wan athit khrap
Are you available Friday, Saturday, or Sunday? (ordinary polite alternative question, male speaker; three proposed days)
วันเสาร์ค่ะ ช่วงบ่ายสะดวกที่สุด
wan sao kha chuang bai saduak thi sut
Saturday; the afternoon is most convenient. (ordinary polite answer, female speaker)
The answer need not repeat the whole proposition. It supplies the selected day because availability and scheduling remain active in the discourse. If none works, say so explicitly: ไม่สะดวกทั้งสามวันครับ “None of the three days works for me.”
Alternative choice versus polar “or not”
Plain หรือ between named candidates forms an alternative question. Clause-final หรือเปล่า tests whether one proposition holds. The answer sets differ.
คุณจะเดินทางด้วยรถไฟหรือรถตู้คะ
khun cha doen thang duai rotfai rue rot tu kha
Will you travel by train or by van? (ordinary polite alternative question, female speaker; answer names a vehicle type)
คุณจะเดินทางด้วยรถไฟหรือเปล่าคะ
khun cha doen thang duai rotfai rue plao kha
Will you travel by train or not? (ordinary polite polar question, female speaker; answer accepts or rejects taking the train)
The first can be answered รถตู้ค่ะ “the van.” The second calls for นั่งรถไฟค่ะ “yes, I will take the train” or ไม่นั่งรถไฟค่ะ “no, I won't take the train.” The fuller หรือเปล่า guide develops that polar construction.
Adding ไหม after a choice is possible when the speaker asks whether either offered item is wanted at all: รับชาหรือกาแฟไหมคะ can mean “Would you like tea or coffee?” with rejection of both available. Without ไหม, รับชาหรือกาแฟคะ more directly asks which one. Do not treat the extra particle as meaningless politeness.
Explicit positive–negative alternatives
Thai can name both a positive and negative alternative: ไปหรือไม่ไป “go or not go.” This is forceful and often (formal), deliberative, or contrastive. In official forms and careful writing, หรือไม่ commonly means “whether or not.” In casual neutral information seeking, ไหม or หรือเปล่า is usually lighter.
โปรดยืนยันว่าจะเข้าร่วมประชุมหรือไม่เข้าร่วมค่ะ
prot yuenyan wa cha khao ruam prachum rue mai khao ruam kha
Please confirm whether you will attend the meeting or not. (formal administrative request, female speaker; both alternatives stated)
ตกลงคุณจะต่อสัญญาหรือไม่ต่อครับ
toklong khun cha to sanya rue mai to khrap
So, will you renew the contract or not? (firm deliberative question, male speaker; explicit opposed predicates)
The second can sound pressing because it demands a choice. Polite ครับ marks the social relation but does not remove that pressure. Choose the longer positive–negative frame only when explicit commitment is intended.
Information seeking, confirmation, and repair
An alternative question requests selection. A statement plus ใช่ไหม proposes one answer for confirmation. Repeating two possible hearings can repair something the speaker did not hear clearly.
นัดวันอังคารหรือวันพุธคะ
nat wan angkhan rue wan phut kha
Is the appointment Tuesday or Wednesday? (polite hearing-repair question, female speaker; two candidate days)
นัดวันพุธใช่ไหมครับ
nat wan phut chai mai khrap
The appointment is Wednesday, right? (ordinary polite confirmation question, male speaker; one candidate proposed)
The repair question does not assume either candidate. The confirmation question displays a preference for Wednesday. See confirmation with ใช่ไหม.
Polite particles follow the entire choice: A หรือ B คะ/ครับ. Placing คะ after both alternatives breaks one question into awkward fragments unless the speaker is deliberately restarting.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
A railway employee helps a traveler choose a ticket.
ต้องการตั๋วเที่ยวเดียวหรือไปกลับคะ
tongkan tua thiao diao rue pai klap kha
Would you like a one-way or return ticket? (ordinary polite service question, female employee)
ไปกลับครับ กลับเย็นวันอาทิตย์
pai klap khrap klap yen wan athit
Return, please; I'm coming back Sunday evening. (ordinary polite answer, male traveler)
จะเดินทางชั้นธรรมดาหรือชั้นหนึ่งคะ
cha doen thang chan thammada rue chan nueng kha
Will you travel standard class or first class? (ordinary polite alternative question, female speaker)
ชั้นธรรมดาครับ ขอที่นั่งริมหน้าต่าง
chan thammada khrap kho thi nang rim natang
Standard class, please. I'd like a window seat. (ordinary polite answer, male speaker)
Each reply names the selected alternative and adds useful information. A bare ใช่ครับ would leave the employee unable to tell which ticket or class was chosen.
Common Mistakes
1. Answering a choice with bare ใช่
❌ จะไปเชียงใหม่หรือภูเก็ตคะ — ใช่ครับ
Incorrect answer shape—ใช่ does not identify which destination was chosen.
✅ จะไปเชียงใหม่หรือภูเก็ตคะ — ไปเชียงใหม่ครับ
cha pai chiang mai rue phuket kha pai chiang mai khrap
Are you going to Chiang Mai or Phuket? — Chiang Mai. (ordinary polite exchange)
2. Putting หรือ before the whole question
❌ หรือคุณจะจ่ายเงินสดโอนผ่านธนาคารคะ
Incorrect—the alternatives must appear on opposite sides of หรือ.
✅ คุณจะจ่ายเงินสดหรือโอนผ่านธนาคารคะ
khun cha chai ngoen sot rue on phan thanakhan kha
Will you pay cash or by bank transfer? (ordinary polite alternative question, female speaker)
3. Repeating the polite particle inside the choice
❌ รับชาคะหรือกาแฟคะ
Incorrect neutral phrasing—the polite particle belongs after the complete alternative set.
✅ รับชาหรือกาแฟคะ
rap cha rue kafae kha
Would you like tea or coffee? (ordinary polite service question, female speaker)
4. Treating ไหม as empty politeness
❌ จะรับชาหรือกาแฟไหมคะ
Wrong for the intended forced choice ‘which one?’—ไหม can widen the decision to accepting or rejecting the offered drinks altogether.
✅ จะรับชาหรือกาแฟคะ
cha rap cha rue kafae kha
Will you have tea or coffee? (ordinary polite alternative question, female speaker; one of the named options requested)
5. Collapsing two full events into an unclear string
❌ คุณจะรับสินค้าเองหรือให้บริษัทคะ
Incomplete—the second alternative names the company but omits what it is to do.
✅ คุณจะมารับสินค้าเอง หรือให้บริษัทส่งถึงบ้านคะ
khun cha ma rap sinkha eng rue hai borisat song thueng ban kha
Will you pick up the goods yourself, or should the company deliver them to your home? (ordinary polite alternative question, female speaker)
Key Takeaways
- Put หรือ between the proposed values, predicates, or clauses in the ordinary answer position.
- Answer by selecting or rejecting an alternative, not automatically with ใช่/ไม่ใช่.
- Distinguish A หรือ B from polar A หรือเปล่า and confirmation A ใช่ไหม.
- Place ครับ/คะ after the complete choice; use explicit A หรือไม่ A only when a firm or formal contrast fits.
