Oír: Full Conjugation | Spanish (Latin America) Grammar

The verb oír means "to hear". It is highly irregular: it takes an accent mark in the infinitive, inserts a "y" in several present-tense forms, and has a unique preterite. Note that oír refers to passively hearing sound, while escuchar refers to actively listening.

Oír is one of the few Spanish infinitives that ends in a stressed vowel with a written accent (i in this case). That accent appears in many of its conjugations to preserve the pronunciation.

Don't confuse oír (to hear, passive reception of sound) with escuchar (to listen, active attention). In Latin America, ¡Oye! is the standard way to say "Hey!" to get someone's attention informally.
