odgovarati / odgovoriti (to answer)

The answer verb teaches two important pieces of Serbian government at once. The person receiving the answer is dative—одговорити некоме—while the question, message, or challenge answered normally follows на + accusative—одговорити на питање. The aspect pair is одговарати (imperfective) and одговорити (perfective), but одговарати also has several common meanings that do not pair with perfective одговорити.

Present and Principal Forms

The imperfective has the regular -ам paradigm. Perfective одговорити has -им in the first-person singular and -е in the third-person plural. Ordinary spelling does not mark accent.

Одговорите ми до петка да бисмо потврдили резервацију.

Reply to me by Friday so that we can confirm the reservation.

Не одговарај на поруке док возиш.

Don't reply to messages while you're driving.

The perfective imperative одговорите asks for one completed response. Imperfective не одговарај prohibits the activity or habit of responding in that situation.

Aspect: Process versus Completed Response

Use одговарати for repeated answering, an ongoing response activity, or a general tendency. Use одговорити when the response is delivered as a bounded event.

Служба за кориснике обично одговара на поруке у року од једног дана.

Customer service usually replies to messages within one day.

Служба ми је јутрос одговорила на захтев за повраћај новца.

Customer service replied to my refund request this morning.

The second sentence presents a completed reply. Serbian can use the perfective present in a future or subordinate environment—кад одговоре, ако одговори—but not as a neutral report of an event happening right now.

Кад одговоре на понуду, обавестићу цео тим.

When they respond to the offer, I'll notify the whole team.

💡
For the “answer” sense, memorize a three-part frame: неко одговара некоме на нешто—a nominative responder, dative addressee, and на + accusative stimulus.

The Addressee Is Dative

The person who receives the response is a dative indirect object: Ани, директору, клијенткињи or the clitics ми, ти, му, јој, нам, вам, им.

Професорка је студенту мирно одговорила на додатно питање.

The professor calmly answered the student's follow-up question.

Зашто ми ниси одговорио кад сам те звао?

Why didn't you answer me when I called you?

English answer someone has no visible to, but Serbian still uses dative студенту, ми. This contrasts directly with accusative питати студента / питати ме.

For the recipient role and the full pronoun inventory, see Dative: The Indirect Object.

The addressee may be omitted when context supplies it: Још није одговорила “She still hasn't replied.” That omission does not change the verb's government.

The Stimulus Uses на + Accusative

Questions, emails, invitations, complaints, accusations, calls, and challenges commonly follow на.

Још нису одговорили на мој имејл о промени адресе.

They still haven't replied to my email about the address change.

Кандидат је директно одговорио на најтеже питање.

The candidate answered the most difficult question directly.

The на phrase is not the addressee. In одговорити колегиници на поруку, колегиници is dative “to the colleague,” while на поруку identifies the message that prompted the answer.

Content can also be a да-clause or direct quotation. The clause states what the answer was rather than what prompted it.

Одговорила је да ће послати исправљену верзију после ручка.

She replied that she would send the corrected version after lunch.

It is possible to combine roles: Одговорила ми је на питање да ће... is structurally heavy and often awkward. In natural prose, use either одговорила ми је да... for the content or одговорила ми је на питање for the stimulus, adding both only when both are genuinely needed.

Clitic Order

A dative clitic occupies the regular second-position cluster. In a third-person singular perfect clause, dative ми/ти/му/јој... precedes auxiliary је.

Директорка нам је одговорила тек после другог подсетника.

The director replied to us only after the second reminder.

Јуче сам му одговорила на сва питања о уговору.

Yesterday I answered all his questions about the contract.

The sequences are нам је and сам му. Serbian does not place the clitic directly after the lexical verb merely because English places the object there. Full dative forms express contrast: Мени је одговорио, а њој није.

Three Other Meanings of одговарати

The imperfective form is polysemous. Its common non-answer senses are not aspectually completed by одговорити.

“Suit / be convenient” + dative

Мени одговара термин у четвртак после три.

Thursday after three works for me.

The suitable option is the subject; the person whose needs it suits is dative. Термин ми одговори cannot mean “the appointment worked for me.”

“Be responsible / liable” + за + accusative

Руководилац одговара за безбедност запослених у погону.

The manager is responsible for employee safety in the plant.

This is a continuing responsibility, not an act of replying. In legal contexts, одговарати за can also mean “be held liable for.”

“Correspond to” + dative

Опис на сајту не одговара стварном стању апартмана.

The description on the website does not correspond to the apartment's actual condition.

This usage is common in formal and neutral prose. Again, одговорити does not provide its perfective counterpart.

There is a narrower (formal) construction одговорити захтевима / очекивањима “meet requirements / expectations.” It is lexicalized and should not be generalized to the “suit a person” or “correspond to reality” senses.

Предложено решење је одговорило свим техничким захтевима.

The proposed solution met all the technical requirements. (formal)

💡
Before choosing aspect, identify the lexical meaning. The “give a response” sense has the transparent everyday pair одговарати / одговорити; other senses and the formal phrase одговорити захтевима must be learned separately.

Micro-dialogue

„Јеси ли питао Ивану за нови рок?“ — „Јесам, али ми још није одговорила.“ — „Пошаљи јој кратак подсетник.“ — „Хоћу, па ћу ти јавити кад одговори.“

‘Did you ask Ivana about the new deadline?’ — ‘Yes, but she still hasn't replied to me.’ — ‘Send her a short reminder.’ — ‘I will, and I'll let you know when she replies.’

The dialogue contrasts accusative Ивану after питати with dative clitics ми, јој, ти in the response and transfer frames.

Common Mistakes

1. Marking the addressee accusative.

❌ Одговорио сам новог клијента истог дана.

Incorrect — the person receiving an answer must be dative.

✅ Одговорио сам новом клијенту истог дана.

I replied to the new client the same day.

2. Omitting на before the question or message.

❌ Молим вас, одговорите ово питање.

Incorrect — the stimulus answered requires на + accusative.

✅ Молим вас, одговорите на ово питање.

Please answer this question.

3. Using perfective одговорити for “suit.”

❌ Нови распоред ми је одговорио.

Incorrect for ‘suited me’ — this lexical meaning belongs to imperfective одговарати.

✅ Нови распоред ми је одговарао јер сам радио од куће.

The new schedule suited me because I worked from home.

4. Leaving the dative clitic after the lexical verb.

❌ После састанка одговорила је нам на поруку.

Incorrect — нам belongs before auxiliary је in the second-position cluster.

✅ После састанка нам је одговорила на поруку.

After the meeting, she replied to our message.

Practice 1: Identify Addressee and Stimulus

Supply dative for the person and на + accusative for what prompted the reply.

Адвокатица је клијенткињи одговорила на сва питања о поступку.

The lawyer answered the client's questions about the procedure. Answer: клијенткињи is dative; на сва питања is на + accusative.

Одговори им на позив пре него што потврде списак гостију.

Reply to their invitation before they confirm the guest list. Answer: им is dative; на позив is на + accusative.

Practice 2: Select Aspect or Lexical Meaning

Choose одговарати for a habit/process or “suit,” and одговорити for one completed reply.

Овај крој ми не одговара, али ми се боја допада.

This cut doesn't suit me, but I like the color. Answer: non-answer meaning, always одговарати here.

Чим сам прочитао жалбу, одговорио сам на њу.

As soon as I read the complaint, I responded to it. Answer: one completed response.

Key Takeaways

  • The recipient is dative: одговорити некоме.
  • The question, message, or challenge answered uses на + accusative.
  • Одговарати / одговорити contrasts process or repetition with a completed reply.
  • Одговарати also means “suit,” “be responsible,” and “correspond”; these normally remain imperfective. Formal одговорити захтевима “meet requirements” is a separate lexicalized use.
  • Dative clitics follow normal second-position order: нам је одговорила, сам му одговорио.
