Куповати — купити is the basic imperfective–perfective pair for acquiring something in exchange for money. Куповати opens the activity or presents it as habitual; купити presents one purchase as achieved. Both normally take the thing bought in the accusative.
Forms and the -ова- → -уј- stem
The infinitive and past stem of куповати contain -ова-, but its present and imperative use -уј-. This is a productive Serbian conjugation pattern, not a spelling variation.
| Form | Imperfective куповати | Perfective купити |
|---|---|---|
| present 1sg | купујем | купим |
| present 2sg | купујеш | купиш |
| present 3sg | купује | купи |
| present plural | купујемо, купујете, купују | купимо, купите, купе |
| past participle | куповао, куповала | купио, купила |
| imperative | купуј, купујте | купи, купите |
| Future I | куповаћу | купићу |
Обично купујем поврће на пијаци, а хлеб у пекари.
I usually buy vegetables at the market and bread at the bakery.
Купила сам последњу карту преко апликације.
I bought the last ticket through the app. (female speaker)
The first sentence describes a routine; the second asserts one completed acquisition. A perfective present such as купим normally points to a future or conditional boundary: ако купим, “if I buy.” It is not a neutral ongoing present.
What is bought: accusative
The purchased item is the direct object. Masculine animate nouns therefore take genitive-like accusative, while masculine inanimate nouns retain the nominative form.
Купујемо половни сто за нову канцеларију.
We’re buying a secondhand table for the new office.
Купили су младог пса од регистрованог одгајивача.
They bought a young dog from a registered breeder.
The verb can be used absolutely when the object is understood, especially in a shop: Само гледам, не купујем “I’m just looking; I’m not buying.”
The source is often од + genitive for a person or supplier and у + locative for a shop or other location.
Овај сир купујемо од малог произвођача из Срема.
We buy this cheese from a small producer in Srem.
Лекове је купио у апотеци преко пута болнице.
He bought the medicine at the pharmacy across from the hospital.
Recipient, intended user, and price
A beneficiary can be dative: купити детету јакну means buy the child a jacket. За + accusative profiles whom the item is intended for and can be less tightly integrated: јакна за дете.
Купићу сестри књигу коју је јуче тражила.
I’ll buy my sister the book she asked for yesterday.
Тражимо удобну столицу за деду.
We’re looking for a comfortable chair for Grandpa.
Price can be expressed by за + accusative or as an amount complement. In careful learner production, купити нешто за пет хиљада динара is transparent and reliable.
Ову лампу смо купили за три хиљаде динара на распродаји.
We bought this lamp for three thousand dinars in a sale.
Do not confuse price with payment method. Serbian says платити картицом, with instrumental, while купити картицу means acquire a card.
Object and recipient clitics
Accusative clitics replace a known item: га for a masculine/neuter singular object in relevant paradigms, је/ју for feminine singular, их for plural. With a dative beneficiary, the order is dative before accusative.
Овај ранац је био на снижењу, па сам му га купила за школу.
This backpack was on sale, so I bought it for him for school. (female speaker)
The cluster сам му га contains auxiliary сам, dative му, then accusative га. The pronouns do not follow English order, and they cannot be placed freely after the participle.
Ако нађеш те шоље, купи ми их, молим те.
If you find those mugs, buy them for me, please.
The imperative купи asks for one completed purchase. Imperfective купуј is natural with repeated behavior or advice about a type of shopping: Купуј сезонско воће “Buy seasonal fruit.”
Купити is not платити
Купити profiles acquisition; платити profiles settling a price, charge, or obligation. One can pay without buying anything new, and one can buy now but pay later.
Телефон сам купио јуче, али ћу га плаћати на дванаест рата.
I bought the phone yesterday, but I’ll pay for it in twelve installments. (male speaker)
That contrast is developed on плаћати / платити.
Micro-dialogue
— Да ли сте већ купили карте за концерт? — Јесмо, купили смо их чим је почела продаја.
— Have you already bought the concert tickets? — Yes, we bought them as soon as sales opened. (formal/plural question)
The perfective question asks whether the purchase boundary was reached. Да ли сте куповали карте? would instead ask about involvement in buying, perhaps repeatedly or over a period.
Practice Tasks
Task 1: Choose aspect
Say that you normally buy coffee there, but today you bought tea.
Тамо обично купујем кафу, али сам данас купио чај.
I usually buy coffee there, but today I bought tea. (male speaker)
Task 2: Replace both nouns with clitics
Answer a question about buying Marko the tickets.
Да, купила сам му их јутрос.
Yes, I bought them for him this morning. (female speaker)
Common Mistakes
Keeping -ова- in the present
❌ Сваке суботе куповам воће на пијаци.
Incorrect—the present stem changes -ова- to -уј-: купујем.
✅ Сваке суботе купујем воће на пијаци.
Every Saturday I buy fruit at the market.
Using perfective for an activity in progress
❌ Сада купим намирнице; позваћу те касније.
Incorrect—an ongoing activity requires imperfective купујем, not perfective купим.
✅ Сада купујем намирнице; позваћу те касније.
I’m buying groceries now; I’ll call you later.
Making the bought item genitive without a trigger
❌ Купили смо новог стола за трпезарију.
Incorrect—an inanimate masculine direct object stays accusative нови сто.
✅ Купили смо нови сто за трпезарију.
We bought a new table for the dining room.
Reversing the pronoun clitics
❌ Карте сам их му купила преко интернета.
Incorrect—the noun cannot be redundantly doubled here, and dative precedes accusative in the cluster.
✅ Карте сам му купила преко интернета.
I bought the tickets for him online. (female speaker)
Key Takeaways
- Куповати is process/habit; купити is a bounded purchase.
- Memorize куповати — купујем, not an invented present куповам.
- The item is accusative; a beneficiary may be dative; source and price use their own prepositional frames.
- Keep clitics ordered: сам му га купила, купи ми их.
