Губити — изгубити is the central pair for losing possession, a contest, an opportunity, time, control, or an abstract state. Губити presents an unfolding or recurring loss; изгубити presents the loss as attained. Adding се creates a separate reflexive lexeme meaning get lost, disappear, or lose one’s bearings.
Principal forms
Both verbs use a regular i-class present. The imperfective has no prefix; perfective изгубити adds из- without changing the conjugation endings.
| Form | Imperfective губити | Perfective изгубити |
|---|---|---|
| present | губим, губиш, губи, губимо, губите, губе | изгубим, изгубиш, изгуби, изгубимо, изгубите, изгубе |
| l-participle | губио, губила, губили | изгубио, изгубила, изгубили |
| imperative | губи, губимо, губите | изгуби, изгубимо, изгубите |
| Future I | губићу | изгубићу |
Стално губим оловке јер их остављам у различитим собама.
I keep losing pens because I leave them in different rooms.
Изгубила сам картицу, па сам одмах позвала банку.
I lost my card, so I called the bank immediately. (female speaker)
The first sentence presents a recurring tendency; the second reports one completed loss with a practical consequence.
What is lost: accusative
The entity no longer possessed or available is normally a direct accusative object: изгубити кључ, новчаник, посао, прилику, сигнал.
Возач је изгубио контролу над возилом на мокром путу.
The driver lost control of the vehicle on the wet road.
Ако не одговоримо данас, изгубићемо важног клијента.
If we don’t respond today, we’ll lose an important client.
Known objects become accusative clitics.
Имао сам резервни кључ, али сам и њега негде изгубио.
I had a spare key, but I lost that one somewhere too. (male speaker)
Here full њега is contrastive: even the spare key was lost. In a neutral sentence, use га: Негде сам га изгубио.
Time, opportunities, and internal states
The same frame extends to things that are not physical possessions: губити време, изгубити прилику, изгубити стрпљење, изгубити свест, изгубити наду.
Не желим да губимо време на проблем који је већ решен.
I don’t want us to waste time on a problem that has already been solved.
Због кашњења је изгубила прилику да представи свој предлог.
Because of the delay, she lost the opportunity to present her proposal.
Кад је чуо трећи изговор, коначно је изгубио стрпљење.
When he heard the third excuse, he finally lost his patience.
With време, English often prefers waste. Serbian губити време covers time slipping away or being spent unproductively; stronger траћити време explicitly means squander time.
Contests and opponents
Изгубити утакмицу, меч, партију, изборе means lose a contest. The opponent who defeats the subject follows од + genitive.
Репрезентација је изгубила меч од искуснијег противника.
The national team lost the match to a more experienced opponent.
Ове сезоне ретко губе код куће.
This season they rarely lose at home.
The contest can be omitted when understood. Do not copy English lose against as изгубити против in the basic opponent frame; use изгубити од некога, or name the contest with a против phrase: изгубити утакмицу против Италије.
English “miss” is not always изгубити
English lose and miss divide situations differently. Serbian uses пропустити for missing a bus, appointment, chance, or part of an event through absence; недостајати means be missing/lacking; изгубити means cease to have or fail to win.
Пропустила сам последњи аутобус, али нисам изгубила карту.
I missed the last bus, but I didn’t lose my ticket. (female speaker)
This contrast is lexical, not aspectual. Likewise, заборавити телефон код куће means leave the phone behind through forgetfulness, while изгубити телефон means no longer know where it is.
Reflexive губити се — изгубити се
With се, the subject itself becomes disoriented, disappears from view, fades, or ceases to be clearly perceptible.
Без навигације се лако губим у овом делу града.
Without navigation, I easily get lost in this part of the city.
Изгубили смо се на стази кад је почела магла.
We got lost on the trail when the fog began.
Сигнал се губи чим воз уђе у тунел.
The signal fades as soon as the train enters the tunnel.
In the third-person singular perfect, auxiliary је is omitted beside се: Она се изгубила, not она се је изгубила. First-person смо remains in изгубили смо се.
The broader functions and cluster behavior of се are explained under reflexive verbs.
The command Губи се! means “Get lost!” (informal, hostile). It is not a neutral instruction about navigation and should not be used as a casual equivalent of “go away.”
Related verbs
Загубити often suggests mislaying something temporarily; погубити can describe losing or scattering several items (informal in this everyday sense). Остати без + genitive means end up without something and can describe the resulting state without focusing on the act of loss.
Нисам бацио признаницу; само сам је негде загубио.
I didn’t throw away the receipt; I’ve just misplaced it somewhere. (male speaker)
These are lexical relatives, not neutral replacements for the core aspect pair.

— Зашто зовеш с туђег броја? — Изгубио сам телефон у таксију. — Позови возача пре него што се телефон испразни.
— Why are you calling from someone else’s number? — I lost my phone in a taxi. — Call the driver before the phone battery dies. (male speaker)

Common Mistakes
Using изгубити for missing transport
❌ Изгубио сам јутарњи воз јер сам касно устао.
Incorrect for ‘missed the train’—use пропустио; изгубити would mean cease to possess it.
✅ Пропустио сам јутарњи воз јер сам касно устао.
I missed the morning train because I got up late. (male speaker)
Omitting се when the subject gets lost
❌ Изгубили смо у старом граду и нисмо нашли хотел.
Incorrect for becoming lost—the verb is reflexive изгубити се.
✅ Изгубили смо се у старом граду и нисмо нашли хотел.
We got lost in the old town and couldn’t find the hotel.
Retaining је beside се
❌ Милица се је изгубила на путу до станице.
Incorrect—the third-person singular perfect omits је beside се.
✅ Милица се изгубила на путу до станице.
Milica got lost on the way to the station.
Using the wrong opponent frame
❌ Изгубили смо утакмицу искуснијем тиму.
Incorrect—the opponent follows од + genitive in this frame.
✅ Изгубили смо утакмицу од искуснијег тима.
We lost the match to a more experienced team.
