Serbian builds several related but distinct meanings around бринути: feeling worried, looking after someone, causing concern, and taking practical responsibility. The most useful unit is therefore not the isolated infinitive but a whole frame: бринути се за некога, бринути се о некоме, нешто брине некога, or побринути се за нешто. English hides these differences behind worry, care, and take care.
The Core Construction Map
| Construction | Aspect | Usual meaning |
|---|---|---|
| бринути се за + accusative | imperfective | worry about someone/something |
| бринути се о + locative | imperfective | look after; be responsible for |
| нешто брине некога | imperfective, transitive | something worries someone |
| побринути се за + accusative | perfective | take care of; get something handled |
| побринути се да + present | perfective | make sure that |
| забринути се због + genitive | perfective | become worried because of |
Бринем се за брата јер се није јавио од јутрос.
I'm worried about my brother because he hasn't checked in since this morning.
Она се брине о деди док су њени родитељи на путу.
She is looking after her grandfather while her parents are away.
The first sentence describes anxiety; the second describes continuing care. The same reflexive verb covers both, but its complement helps select the reading. За + accusative strongly favors concern, while о + locative is the regular frame for sustained care or responsibility.
Present and Principal Forms
The infinitive has -ну-, but the present is built on брин-: бринем, not бринунем. The same alternation appears after the prefix in побринути се — побринем се. Ordinary Serbian spelling does not mark lexical pitch or vowel length; the forms below are normal unaccented spelling.
| Person | бринути се | побринути се |
|---|---|---|
| ја | бринем се | побринем се |
| ти | бринеш се | побринеш се |
| он / она / оно | брине се | побрине се |
| ми | бринемо се | побринемо се |
| ви | бринете се | побринете се |
| они / оне / она | брину се | побрину се |
| Form | бринути (се) | побринути се |
|---|---|---|
| l-participle | бринуо / бринула / бринули | побринуо / побринула / побринули |
| 2nd singular imperative | брини (се) | побрини се |
| 2nd plural / formal imperative | брините (се) | побрините се |
| 1st singular future | бринућу (се) | побринућу се |
| conditional, masculine speaker | бринуо бих (се) | побринуо бих се |
Не брини, послаћу ти поруку чим стигнем.
Don't worry; I'll message you as soon as I arrive.
Не брини! is the everyday reassurance. The reflexive version Не брини се! is also standard, but the shorter form is especially frequent in conversation. In contrast, побрини се gives someone a task: it means “see to it,” not “feel concern.”
Aspect Is Accompanied by a Meaning Shift
It is tempting to memorize бринути се / побринути се as a perfectly symmetrical aspect pair. That works only for the practical “care for / handle” meaning. Побринути се presents a bounded intervention whose result should be that the matter is handled; it normally does not mean “worry once.”
Побринућу се за превоз до аеродрома, а ти резервиши смештај.
I'll take care of transportation to the airport, and you book the accommodation.
Побринули смо се да сви добију копију уговора.
We made sure that everyone received a copy of the contract.
For the onset of an emotional state, Serbian uses забринути се “become worried.” Its secondary imperfective забрињавати се presents repeated or continuing worry, though neutral conversation often simply keeps бринути се.
Кад се није вратила до поноћи, забринули смо се.
When she hadn't returned by midnight, we became worried.
Reflexive and Non-reflexive Meanings
In бринути се, се is part of the verb's construction. It is not an object meaning “oneself.” Removing it may create a different transitive frame: нешто брине некога “something worries someone.” The cause is nominative; the concerned person is accusative.
Овај необичан шум ме брине више него квар на екрану.
This unusual noise worries me more than the screen malfunction does.
Највише нас брине то што још нема званичних резултата.
What worries us most is that there are still no official results.
Serbian also permits non-reflexive бринути with a clause in the sense “fear/be concerned that,” especially in (formal) or otherwise deliberate prose. In everyday learner production, the frames above are clearer and more productive.
Бринем да ће предложени рок бити прекратак за темељну проверу.
I am concerned that the proposed deadline will be too short for a thorough review. (formal)
Do not confuse забринути некога with забринути се. The former is transitive “make someone worried”; the latter is intransitive “become worried.”
Вест је забринула родитеље, али деца се нису забринула.
The news worried the parents, but the children did not become worried.
Government: за, о, and да
With за, use the accusative: за тебе, за децу, за посао. With о, use the locative: о теби, о деци, о послу. English about does not tell you which Serbian frame is intended.
Већ месецима бринемо о напуштеном псу из краја.
We've been looking after an abandoned dog from the neighborhood for months.
Сви бринемо за њу, али је лекар рекао да се добро опоравља.
We're all worried about her, but the doctor said she is recovering well.
Побринути се за introduces the matter or person handled. A да-clause instead introduces the desired result: побринути се да врата буду закључана. Serbian uses the finite present after да, even when the main verb is future or perfective.
Clitic Placement
The reflexive се is an unstressed clitic. It belongs near the beginning of its clause, not automatically after the lexical verb. In a past-tense third-person singular reflexive clause, auxiliary је is normally absent beside се.
Због новог запосленог се директорка посебно побринула за распоред.
Because of the new employee, the director took particular care over the schedule.
The first constituent is због новог запосленог, and се follows it. In директорка се побринула, do not add је: директорка се је побринула is not the neutral standard cluster.
With an object clitic, the object precedes се: За њега сам се бринула, where сам се is the auxiliary-plus-reflexive sequence. Full rules appear in Clitic Cluster Order.
Micro-dialogue
„Бринеш ли се због сутрашње контроле?“ — „Мало, али Марко се већ побринуо за сву документацију.“ — „Онда не брини; ја ћу се побринути да стигнемо на време.“
‘Are you worried about tomorrow's inspection?’ — ‘A little, but Marko has already taken care of all the documentation.’ — ‘Then don't worry; I'll make sure we arrive on time.’
The dialogue moves from emotional бринути се, through completed practical побринуо се за, to result-oriented побринути се да.
Common Mistakes
1. Putting a bounded perfective after a phase verb.
❌ Почела је да се побрине за превоз гостију.
Incorrect — phase verb почети selects an imperfective process, while побринути се presents a bounded intervention.
✅ Почела је да се брине о превозу гостију.
She began taking care of transportation for the guests.
2. Keeping accusative after о.
❌ Медицинска сестра се брине о стару госпођу.
Incorrect — о in this care frame governs the locative, not the accusative.
✅ Медицинска сестра се брине о старој госпођи.
The nurse looks after the elderly lady.
3. Using locative after за.
❌ Родитељи брину за новом школом.
Incorrect — за in the worry frame takes the accusative.
✅ Родитељи брину за нову школу у свом крају.
The parents are concerned about the new school in their neighborhood.
4. Retaining је next to reflexive се in the third-person perfect.
❌ Ана се је побринула за госте.
Incorrect — auxiliary је is normally omitted beside reflexive се in this perfect-tense cluster.
✅ Ана се побринула за госте.
Ana took care of the guests.
Practice 1: Choose the Verb Network
Choose бринути се, забринути се, or побринути се according to whether the meaning is a continuing state, its onset, or a completed intervention.
Чим је чуо прогнозу, забринуо се због пута.
As soon as he heard the forecast, he became worried about the trip. Answer: onset of worry.
Секретарица се побринула да сала буде откључана пре осам.
The secretary made sure the hall was unlocked before eight. Answer: completed practical intervention.
Practice 2: Supply the Governed Form
Choose за + accusative for concern or handling, and о + locative for sustained care.
Док смо били у иностранству, комшија се бринуо о нашим биљкама.
While we were abroad, the neighbor looked after our plants. Answer: о + locative.
Не морате да бринете за карте; већ сам их купила.
You don't need to worry about the tickets; I've already bought them. Answer: за + accusative.
Key Takeaways
- Learn complete frames, not just бринути as a translation of worry.
- Бринути се за + accusative expresses concern; бринути се о + locative usually expresses care or responsibility.
- Побринути се is perfective mainly in the practical “handle/ensure” sense; забринути се marks becoming worried.
- Non-reflexive нешто брине некога means that something causes concern.
- Keep се in the second-position clitic cluster and omit third-person auxiliary је beside it in the perfect.
