A Serbian recipe is a compact sequence of quantities and actions. Ingredient measures trigger several case patterns, while the method alternates perfective verbs for completed preparation steps with imperfective verbs for timed cooking processes. Pronouns then keep паприке, смеса, and половине from being repeated in every instruction.
The recipe below is original. It uses polite/plural imperatives, the standard form used to address an unspecified reader. Afterward, the same instruction style is compared with the infinitive found in concise printed recipes. For the wider result-versus-process choice, see aspect in the imperative.

Idiomatic Translation as a Continuous Recipe
Baked peppers with cheese. You need four red peppers, 200 grams of young white cheese, two tablespoons of sour cream, one clove of garlic, a little oil, and salt to taste. Preheat the oven to 200°C and lightly oil a baking tray. Wash and halve the peppers lengthwise, then remove the seeds. Mix the cheese, sour cream, and finely chopped garlic in a bowl. Fill the pepper halves, arrange them in the tray, and bake for about twenty-five minutes, until tender and lightly browned. Let them cool for five minutes before serving warm with bread and a fresh salad.
English combines several steps into participial phrases. The Serbian original maintains a chain of imperatives and clitics; translating each imperative as an emphatic command would make the English sound harsher than the genre intends.
Line-by-Line Grammar
1. The title describes the finished dish
Печене паприке contains passive participial adjective печене, agreeing with feminine plural паприке. The title does not instruct the cook to bake anything. Са сиром uses instrumental after са to name an accompanying or filling ingredient.
Recipe titles frequently use a finished-state adjective: пуњене паприке ‘stuffed peppers,’ кувано поврће ‘boiled vegetables.’ The cooking method later supplies the actions.
2. Quantities select different noun forms
The ingredient line contains several patterns:
| Quantity | Serbian phrase | Form after it |
|---|---|---|
| four | четири црвене паприке | paucal form matching feminine plural |
| 200 grams | двеста грама младог сира | measure noun, then genitive ingredient |
| two spoonfuls | две кашике киселе павлаке | две + кашике, then genitive content |
| one clove | један чен белог лука | singular measure noun, genitive content |
| a little | мало уља | genitive singular/mass noun |
English keeps cheese, sour cream, and garlic unchanged. Serbian exposes the measure–content relation through сира, павлаке, лука.
3. A temperature takes на + accusative
Загрејте рерну на 200 степени treats 200 degrees as the target setting. На + accusative is conventional here. The coordinated perfective imperative премажите asks for one completed coating of the tray.
Instrumental уљем names the substance used to coat it. Adverb танко describes the application: only a light layer is needed.
4. Perfective imperatives divide preparation into steps
Оперите, преполовите, уклоните are perfective. Each establishes a completed result needed for the next action: clean peppers, two halves, no seeds. This is not ‘rude’ perfective aspect; the recipe genre naturally presents a sequence of bounded tasks.
Accusative clitic их refers to plural паприке. In преполовите их, it follows the initial imperative; it must not be stranded after a long phrase translated from English.
5. Ingredient names become direct objects
After quantities, the recipe had genitives сира, павлаке, лука. With помешајте, the actual ingredients become accusative direct objects: сир, павлаку, бели лук. Forms change because syntactic roles change, not because the ingredients themselves changed.
Исецкан is a passive participle from исецкати and agrees with masculine лук. Adverb ситно means finely, describing the result of chopping.
6. Filling uses instrumental for the material
Напунити нешто нечим takes an accusative container and instrumental material: половине are filled смесом. Participial adjective припремљеном agrees with instrumental feminine singular смесом.
The next clitic их now refers to половине, not directly to the original whole peppers. Reference follows the active discourse object.
7. Timed cooking favors imperfective пеците
Пеците presents the baking process over twenty-five minutes. The duration phrase has no preposition: двадесет пет минута. Although the overall recipe aims at a result, imperfective aspect is natural while an activity continues for a measured interval.
The boundary clause док... не омекшају и... не порумене contains so-called expletive or anticipatory не after док with a completion limit. It means ‘until they soften and brown,’ not ‘while they do not soften.’ Both perfective predicates mark the desired endpoint.
8. Future-time clauses use present forms
Кад их извадите, a perfective present under кад, refers to the future step of taking the peppers out. Serbian does not insert future ћете merely because English says ‘when you take them out.’
Оставите их пет минута да се прохладе combines a completed placement/decision with a да clause naming the intended change. Прохладити се means cool somewhat, not become completely cold.
9. Serving instruction and predicative agreement
Послужите их топле has feminine plural топле, agreeing with the peppers as the state in which they are served. Уз + accusative introduces accompaniments: уз хлеб и свежу салату.
Imperative and Infinitive Recipe Styles
The same opening steps can appear as infinitives:
Загрејати рерну на 200 степени. Паприке опрати, преполовити и очистити од семенки.
Preheat the oven to 200 degrees. Wash, halve, and deseed the peppers. (concise recipe style)
This infinitive is (written recipe/instructional) style. It avoids directly addressing the reader and makes steps resemble checklist entries. In conversation, use an imperative or a personal construction; do not generalize recipe infinitives into ordinary commands.
Discourse and Register
The method follows the physical dependency of the dish: heat oven → prepare tray → prepare peppers → make filling → fill → bake → rest → serve. Aspect reinforces that organization. Perfectives close preparation steps, while imperfective пеците holds the central process open until the док... не endpoint.
Clitics reduce repetition, but their referent can shift. First их means the peppers, later it means the filled halves. A good translation follows what can actually be washed, arranged, baked, or served rather than replacing every их with the same English noun.
Reuse Exercises
Task 1: Double the recipe
Change four peppers to eight, 200 grams of cheese to 400, and two spoonfuls of sour cream to four. Adjust every numeral-governed form.
За дуплу меру припремите осам црвених паприка, четиристо грама младог сира и четири кашике киселе павлаке.
For a double batch, prepare eight red peppers, 400 grams of young white cheese, and four tablespoons of sour cream.
Task 2: Convert the method to infinitive style
Rewrite the filling and baking lines without addressing the reader.
Половине напунити смесом, поређати у плех и пећи око двадесет пет минута.
Fill the halves with the mixture, arrange them in the tray, and bake for about twenty-five minutes. (recipe infinitive style)
Common Mistakes
Using nominative after a measure
❌ Додајте двеста грама млади сир.
Incorrect — the measured ingredient is genitive: младог сира.
✅ Додајте двеста грама младог сира у чинију.
Add 200 grams of young white cheese to the bowl.
Using genitive plural after four
❌ Оперите четири црвених паприка.
Incorrect — after четири use the paucal form четири црвене паприке.
✅ Оперите четири црвене паприке и две тиквице.
Wash four red peppers and two zucchini.
Choosing the wrong temperature preposition
❌ Пеците јело у 200 степени.
Incorrect for an oven setting — use на 200 степени.
✅ Пеците јело на 200 степени око пола сата.
Bake the dish at 200 degrees for about half an hour.
Reading док не as ordinary negation
❌ Престаните да печете док паприке не омекшају.
Incorrect sequence for the intended recipe — this says to stop baking during the period before the peppers soften.
✅ Пеците паприке док не омекшају.
Bake the peppers until they soften.
Key Takeaways
- Quantities expose measure–content relations through genitive forms.
- Perfective imperatives mark completed preparation steps; imperfective verbs suit timed processes.
- Track changing clitic referents through the physical sequence of the recipe.
- Recipe infinitives are a written instructional convention, not a general replacement for imperatives.
