Public signs compress whole instructions into a few words. A Serbian sign may use a noun instead of a verb, a passive adjective without an auxiliary, a negative imperative, or a case-marked phrase whose governing word is only implied. Recognizing the construction matters more than translating each label literally.
The following set is original and imagines a walk through a public cultural center. Both standard scripts appear because real public space may use either Serbian Cyrillic or Serbian Latin. The Latin lines are not pronunciation guides; they are the same language in its second standard script. The underlying system is mapped on the dual-alphabet overview.

These are idiomatic sign translations, not word-for-word glosses. У случају опасности is literally ‘in the event of danger,’ yet English convention packages the whole phrase as emergency exit. Забрањено пушење is grammatically closer to ‘smoking prohibited,’ but no smoking is the natural English sign.
Line-by-Line Grammar
1. Улаз за посетиоце is a label, not an order
Улаз names the place or access point. За + accusative gives its intended users: plural посетиоце is the animate accusative of посетиоци. No verb meaning ‘enter’ is present.
Compare a directional instruction:
Посетиоци улазе на бочни улаз.
Visitors enter through the side entrance.
Here nominative посетиоци is an expressed subject. On the sign, accusative посетиоце depends on за.
2. A fixed condition phrase becomes English ‘emergency’
У случају опасности contains two locative/genitive relations: у случају is locative after у because it describes a circumstance, while опасности is genitive dependent on случај. The sign labels the exit used if danger arises.
The Latin spelling preserves č in slučaju. Writing slucaju is not an informal variant of correct standard spelling; it is a diacriticless workaround and is unsuitable on a carefully prepared public sign.
3. Direction labels omit a motion verb
Дечје одељење — први спрат gives destination information without saying налази се на. Readers recover ‘the children's department is on the first floor.’ Neuter дечје agrees with одељење, while masculine први agrees with спрат.
The corresponding standard Latin is Dečje odeljenje — prvi sprat. Cyrillic љ maps to the single Latin alphabetic letter lj, not to l plus an unrelated sound.
4. Забрањен улаз uses adjectival passive meaning
In Zabranjen ulaz, masculine zabranjen agrees with ulaz. The phrase describes entry as prohibited; it does not name the authority imposing the rule. Dative plural neovlašćenim licima identifies the group to whom entry is unavailable.
The Latin forms require š and ć: neovlašćenim. Serbian Cyrillic would be неовлашћеним. This exact one-to-one relation lets a reader switch scripts without translating.
5. Neuter забрањено works with an activity noun
Забрањено пушење uses neuter забрањено because verbal noun пушење is neuter. The structure differs from masculine забрањен улаз, but both become an English no... sign.
ЗАБРАЊЕНО ФОТОГРАФИСАЊЕ
NO PHOTOGRAPHY
This pattern is productive in institutional notices, but it sounds like a rule label, not normal conversation. A staff member speaking to visitors would more naturally say Овде не сме да се фотографише.
6. Negative imperfective imperative prevents an activity
Не наслањајте се is a polite/plural negative imperative. Imperfective наслањати се treats leaning on the door as behavior to avoid or stop. На врата is accusative because the body would press onto/against the door.
The Latin pair naslanjajte se preserves nj as a single alphabetic letter. It must not be rewritten as naslanјajte, which mixes scripts inside one word.
7. Пазите на selects accusative
The formal/plural imperative пазите addresses all readers politely. In the warning frame пазити на нешто, на takes accusative степеник. English ‘watch the step’ has no preposition, so English syntax cannot predict the Serbian case.
The sign warns of a specific step. Степенице would mean stairs and require plural пазите на степенице.
8. A status label plus a positive alternative
Радови у току is an institutional nominal phrase meaning that work is underway. Locative у току is a fixed status expression. The sign then uses the imperative користите of imperfective користити; it directs ongoing use of an alternative entrance throughout the works.
Други улаз is accusative masculine inanimate, identical in form to nominative. The instruction remains clear because it is the direct object of користите.
9. Молимо вас да... softens a longer prohibition
Молимо вас да не остављате... is more interpersonal than a bare забрањено label. Accusative вас is the person appealed to; the да clause contains negative imperfective не остављате, suitable for a repeated public behavior.
Испред улаза takes genitive after испред. Accusative plural бицикле is the object being left. The sign's scope is the area in front of the entrance, not an unlimited ban on bicycles.
Script and Institutional Style
Cyrillic and Latin are both standard Serbian scripts. A single institution may choose one script consistently, supply parallel versions, or use different scripts in different contexts. The grammatical construction does not change during transliteration:
| Cyrillic | Latin | Key correspondences |
|---|---|---|
| Забрањено пушење | Zabranjeno pušenje | њ/nj, ш/š |
| Дечје одељење | Dečje odeljenje | ч/č, љ/lj, њ/nj |
| Неовлашћеним лицима | Neovlašćenim licima | ш/š, ћ/ć |
All-capital lettering is common on signs, but it is design, not a rule that every public notice must shout. In running institutional text, Serbian normally uses sentence-style capitalization.
Discourse and Pragmatics
A sign has no conversational turn in which the reader can ask what an omitted verb means. Writers therefore rely on conventional patterns: place labels, забрањен/забрањено + noun, negative imperatives, and polite молимо вас да notices. The shortest form is not always best: Радови у току reports a condition, while користите други улаз tells the reader what to do next.
The choice between a prohibition and a request also changes tone. Забрањено остављање бицикала categorizes the behavior as prohibited; молимо вас да не остављате бицикле appeals directly to readers. Both are institutional, but neither should be copied as the default way to address a friend.
Reuse Exercises
Task 1: Build a temporary closure sign
State that the main entrance is closed and direct visitors to the courtyard entrance. Produce both scripts without losing diacritics.
ГЛАВНИ УЛАЗ ЈЕ ПРИВРЕМЕНО ЗАТВОРЕН — КОРИСТИТЕ УЛАЗ ИЗ ДВОРИШТА
THE MAIN ENTRANCE IS TEMPORARILY CLOSED — USE THE COURTYARD ENTRANCE
GLAVNI ULAZ JE PRIVREMENO ZATVOREN — KORISTITE ULAZ IZ DVORIŠTA
THE MAIN ENTRANCE IS TEMPORARILY CLOSED — USE THE COURTYARD ENTRANCE
Task 2: Change a rule label into a polite notice
Turn Забрањено уношење хране into a sentence that asks visitors not to bring food into the hall.
Молимо вас да не уносите храну у салу.
Please do not bring food into the hall.
Common Mistakes
Dropping Latin diacritics
❌ ZABRANJENO PUSENJE
Incorrect standard Latin spelling — pušenje requires š.
✅ ZABRANJENO PUŠENJE
NO SMOKING
Using nominative after за
❌ УЛАЗ ЗА ПОСЕТИОЦИ
Incorrect — за takes accusative посетиоце in this purpose/user phrase.
✅ УЛАЗ ЗА ПОСЕТИОЦЕ СА ПОЗИВНИЦАМА
ENTRANCE FOR VISITORS WITH INVITATIONS
Failing agreement in a prohibition
❌ ЗАБРАЊЕН ПУШЕЊЕ У ХОДНИКУ
Incorrect — neuter пушење requires забрањено.
✅ ЗАБРАЊЕНО ПУШЕЊЕ У ХОДНИКУ
NO SMOKING IN THE CORRIDOR
Translating an English sign preposition mechanically
❌ ПАЗИТЕ СТЕПЕНИК
Incorrect — the Serbian warning frame is пазити на + accusative.
✅ ПАЗИТЕ НА НИСКУ ГРЕДУ
MIND THE LOW BEAM
Key Takeaways
- Recover omitted verbs from conventional sign patterns rather than translating labels word by word.
- Track agreement in забрањен улаз versus забрањено пушење.
- Negative imperfective imperatives typically prohibit an ongoing or repeatable behavior.
- Treat Cyrillic and Latin as two standard scripts and preserve every one-to-one correspondence and diacritic.
