Hotel check-in combines several kinds of information in a very short exchange: a reservation name, dates and numbers, an identity document, the location of facilities, and arrangements for later. The grammar also stays consistently formal: the receptionist and guest use plural ви forms even though each is addressing one person.
The dialogue below is contemporary neutral Serbian. Its short replies are not incomplete Serbian; they are ordinary conversational ellipsis, where shared information is left unspoken.
For the relationship choice behind the plural forms, review informal ти and formal ви.
Complete Dialogue
Рецепционерка: Добро вече. Изволите?
Receptionist: Good evening. How can I help you?
Гошћа: Добро вече. Имам резервацију на име Јелене Марковић.
Guest: Good evening. I have a reservation in the name of Jelena Marković.
Рецепционерка: Само тренутак... Да, двокреветна соба за две ноћи. Могу ли да видим личну карту или пасош?
Receptionist: Just a moment... Yes, a double room for two nights. May I see your ID card or passport?
Гошћа: Наравно, изволите. Да ли је доручак укључен у цену?
Guest: Of course, here you are. Is breakfast included in the price?
Рецепционерка: Јесте. Служи се у ресторану на првом спрату, од седам до десет.
Receptionist: It is. It is served in the restaurant on the first floor, from seven to ten.
Гошћа: Одлично. А када треба да напустим собу у четвртак?
Guest: Great. And when do I need to check out on Thursday?
Рецепционерка: До једанаест. Ваша соба је број 307, на трећем спрату. Лифт је десно.
Receptionist: By eleven. Your room is number 307, on the third floor. The elevator is on the right.
Гошћа: Хвала. Да ли бисте могли да ми резервишете такси за сутра ујутру?
Guest: Thank you. Could you book me a taxi for tomorrow morning?
Рецепционерка: Наравно. За које време?
Receptionist: Of course. For what time?
Гошћа: За пола осам, молим вас.
Guest: For half past seven, please.
Рецепционерка: У реду. Такси ће вас чекати испред хотела у седам и тридесет.
Receptionist: All right. The taxi will be waiting for you in front of the hotel at seven thirty.
Line-by-Line Grammar
1. Изволите? does more than ‘please’
At the desk, изволите? invites the guest to speak: ‘How can I help?’ The same form can mean ‘here you are’ when the guest hands over the document. Its interpretation comes from the action and turn in the conversation, not from a single English equivalent.
The ending -те is both the plural imperative and the polite singular form. This is the first signal that the exchange uses formal ви.
2. A reservation is на име + genitive
На име Јелене Марковић means that the booking is registered under Jelena's name. The given name takes genitive Јелене. A consonant-final surname belonging to a woman normally remains unchanged: Марковић.
English says ‘under the name’; Serbian conventionally uses на име. A literal choice such as под именом has other meanings and is not the normal hotel formula.
3. The receptionist omits what is recoverable
Да, двокреветна соба за две ноћи is not a full clause on paper. In context it recovers ‘I see your booking: it is for...’ Serbian conversation freely omits имате/резервисали сте when the booking screen and previous sentence make the meaning obvious.
The count phrase две ноћи uses the paucal form after две. The adjective двокреветна agrees with feminine соба, not with the guests.
4. Formal permission with могу ли да...
Могу ли да видим...? is a tactful request for permission. The receptionist asks literally whether she may see the document. Лична карта is the standard ID card; пасош is the alternative direct object.
The guest's изволите now means ‘here you are.’ Repeating the same word with a new conversational job is natural, not redundant.
5. Questions with да ли keep clitics early
In Да ли је доручак укључен у цену?, the auxiliary clitic је follows да ли. The passive participle укључен agrees with masculine доручак. English ‘included’ does not show this gender agreement.
The short answer Јесте confirms the whole proposition. It is more informative than bare да here: ‘Yes, it is.’ Serbian allows this echo answer because the copular form carries the polarity.
6. Facilities use locative phrases
Breakfast се служи у ресторану на првом спрату. Both phrases locate the event: у + locative gives ресторану, and на + locative gives првом спрату. Movement would use accusative: идем у ресторан, пењем се на први спрат.
The impersonal-looking passive служи се keeps attention on breakfast service, not on the staff member serving it.
7. Deadlines and room numbers
До једанаест means ‘by eleven,’ with the omitted noun сати understood. The room is број 307; speakers may read this as триста седам. Its location is на трећем спрату, with ordinal трећем in locative agreement.
The directional word десно is an adverb: Лифт је десно. No explicit ‘to your right’ is required when orientation is clear.
8. A conditional request plus a clitic
Да ли бисте могли...? is more deferential than Можете ли...?, though both are polite (formal). Бисте is the second-person plural conditional auxiliary required by formal ви. The dative clitic ми identifies the beneficiary: ‘book a taxi for me.’
Its early position—да ли бисте могли да ми резервишете—is part of normal Serbian clitic organization. English word order does not predict it.
9. Time: пола осам means 7:30
Serbian counts toward the coming hour: пола осам is halfway to eight, therefore 7:30. The receptionist repeats it unambiguously as у седам и тридесет. Repeating essential details is normal service-language confirmation, not needless verbosity.
10. A future arrangement
Такси ће вас чекати uses future I. The accusative clitic вас means formal singular ‘you’ here. The perfective сачекати would foreground completion or meeting someone; imperfective чекати presents the taxi as being there waiting at the agreed time.
Discourse and Register
The exchange is efficient but courteous. Neither speaker overuses titles or elaborate apologies. Formality comes mainly from plural verb forms (бисте могли, изволите) and вас, plus the softeners молим вас, само тренутак, у реду.
The guest asks one question at a time and the receptionist confirms operational details. In Serbian service encounters, this measured directness is neutral (formal/service), not cold. A highly literary opening or an archaic honorific would sound imitative rather than polite.
Reuse Exercises
Task 1: Change the booking details
Replace the guest's name, room type, and number of nights while preserving the case frame.
Имам резервацију на име Николе Илића, једнокреветну собу за три ноћи.
I have a reservation in the name of Nikola Ilić, a single room for three nights.
Task 2: Arrange a different service
Ask formally for a wake-up call at six fifteen, then confirm it with future I.
Да ли бисте могли да ме пробудите у шест и петнаест? Позваћемо вас телефоном тачно у шест и петнаест.
Could you wake me at six fifteen? We will call you at exactly six fifteen.
Common Mistakes
Using nominative after на име
❌ Имам резервацију на име Јелена Марковић.
Incorrect — на име requires genitive Јелене; the woman's consonant-final surname remains Марковић.
✅ Имам резервацију на име Јелене Марковић.
I have a reservation in the name of Jelena Marković.
Putting the auxiliary after the subject in a да ли question
❌ Да ли доручак је укључен у цену?
Incorrect — the clitic је belongs immediately after да ли.
✅ Да ли је вечера укључена у цену?
Is dinner included in the price?
Using destination case for a facility's location
❌ Ресторан је на први спрат.
Incorrect — stationary location requires locative на првом спрату.
✅ Сала за доручак је на другом спрату.
The breakfast room is on the second floor.
Leaving the dative clitic late
❌ Можете ли резервисати такси ми за вечерас?
Incorrect — unstressed ми belongs in the early clitic position, not after the object.
✅ Можете ли ми резервисати такси за вечерас?
Can you book me a taxi for tonight?
