Negation in Word Formation (ne-, ni-, bez-)

Serbian can negate a statement, but it can also build a new word with negative meaning. In Одговор није јасан “The answer is not clear,” separate није negates the predicate. In Одговор је нејасан “The answer is unclear,” не- belongs to the derived adjective нејасан. That lexical-versus-syntactic distinction controls spelling and often changes nuance.

This page treats word formation with не-, negative-series ни-, and absence-forming без-/бес-. It does not teach verbal negation or negative concord; those belong to negation scope and special cases and the negative-pronoun guide.

Не- builds a lexical opposite

With established nouns, adjectives, and adverbs, не- is written together. It usually rejects a property, state, or expected norm.

Positive baseDerived wordUsual meaning
познатнепознатunknown, unfamiliar
могућнемогућimpossible
јасаннејасанunclear
стрпљивнестрпљивimpatient; eager
правданеправдаinjustice
знањенезнањеignorance, lack of knowledge
пажљивонепажљивоcarelessly, inattentively

Адреса је била нејасна, па је курир позвао примаоца.

The address was unclear, so the courier called the recipient.

Из незнања је потписао неповољан уговор.

Out of ignorance, he signed an unfavorable contract.

The derived word names a conventional concept. Неправда is not just any moment when justice is denied; it is the lexical noun “injustice.” Нестрпљив can mean “impatient,” but in нестрпљив да крене it can also mean eagerly unable to wait. Lexicalization means that simple logical reversal is not always the whole meaning.

Деца су била нестрпљива да отворе поклоне.

The children were eager to open the presents.

Other lexicalized meanings include необичан “unusual/remarkable,” незгода “accident/mishap,” and невин “innocent.” You cannot always predict them by calculating “not + base.”

На путу се догодила мања незгода, али нико није повређен.

There was a minor accident on the road, but nobody was injured.

💡
Learn frequent negative derivatives as vocabulary, not merely as a prefix exercise. Незгода is “a mishap,” not an abstract denial of згода.

Derived adjective or negated predicate?

Compare a lexical property with a clause that denies a positive description:

Задатак је немогућ без додатних података.

The task is impossible without additional data.

Задатак није могућ у овој верзији програма.

The task is not possible in this version of the program.

The first classifies the task with adjective немогућ. The second places negation on copula је → није and denies могућ in the stated conditions. The real-world conclusion may overlap, but the grammar differs.

Њен одговор је неодређен.

Her answer is vague/indeterminate.

Њен одговор није одређен правилником.

Her answer is not specified by the regulations.

Here the lexical contrast is decisive: неодређен commonly means “vague/indefinite,” while није одређен can be the passive “has not been specified.” Word formation may therefore select a meaning that clause negation does not reproduce.

In an explicit correction, separate не can reject a label before replacing it: не добар, него одличан “not good but excellent.” That is constituent contrast, not a new dictionary word.

Предлог није неразуман; напротив, практичан је. Али није само добар, него одличан.

The proposal is not unreasonable; on the contrary, it is practical. But it is not merely good—it is excellent.

Ни- creates negative-series words

Bound ни- forms members of the negative series. With pronominal and adverbial bases it means “no-, none-, never-, nowhere-,” not simply the lexical opposite of an adjective.

FormCategory/functionMeaning
ниједанadjectival pronoun/determinernot one, no
ничијиpossessive pronounnobody's
никакавqualitative pronounno kind of
никада / никадadverbnever
нигдеadverbnowhere
нималоdegree adverbnot at all

These words participate in Serbian negative concord and normally accompany a negative predicate. This page records their formation and spelling; their case paradigms and clause behavior are separate topics.

Ниједан кандидат није одговорио нимало убедљиво.

Not one candidate answered at all convincingly.

Та стара шупа више није ничија, али је нико не користи.

That old shed no longer belongs to anyone, but nobody uses it.

Prepositions can split ни- from an inflected pronoun: ни од кога, ни са ким, ни о чему. This is a syntactic combination, not permission to spell every negative-series word separately.

Ни са ким нисам разговарала о томе.

I haven't spoken to anyone about it. (female speaker)

Без- expresses absence

Prefix без- builds nouns and adjectives meaning “without, lacking, free of.” Before a voiceless consonant, voicing assimilation is reflected in spelling as бес-: бескрајан, беспомоћан, бескористан. Before a voiced consonant it remains без-, as in безвучан and безбрижан.

Derived wordTransparent sourceMeaning
безвучанбез звукаvoiceless; soundless
безбрижанбез бригеcarefree
бескрајанбез крајаendless
беспомоћанбез помоћиhelpless
бескућникбез кућеhomeless person

После квара екран је остао безвучан, али слика није нестала.

After the malfunction, the screen remained silent, but the picture did not disappear.

Путовање с малом децом ретко је потпуно безбрижно.

Traveling with small children is rarely completely carefree.

The prefix describes absence; it does not automatically pass judgment. Безалкохолно пиће is alcohol-free, while лоше пиће evaluates quality. A free phrase без + genitive remains separate and can be more productive than a derived adjective:

Наручила је кафу без шећера и без млека.

She ordered coffee without sugar or milk.

Do not invent a prefixed adjective whenever Serbian naturally uses без + genitive. Dictionaries contain безалкохолан, but ordinary “without an appointment” is без заказаног термина, not a manufactured adjective.

Double prefixes and semantic reversal

A second prefix can negate an already derived word. Безначајан means “insignificant”; небезначајан literally denies that lack of significance and conventionally means “not insignificant, considerable.” The result is weaker or more guarded than straightforward значајан.

Поправка ће захтевати небезначајан износ.

The repair will require a not inconsiderable sum.

Likewise небезбедан “unsafe” contains не- plus lexical безбедан “safe”; learners should analyze the contemporary word family, not assume that every visible sequence has a transparent modern meaning. Multiple prefixes are possible only when the resulting word is established and interpretable.

Productivity and stress are lexical

Не- is productive, but not a machine that replaces every English un- or non-. Serbian says сув “dry,” not an invented “unwet,” and није гладан “is not hungry” rather than a nonexistent prefixed adjective. Без- likewise competes with ordinary phrases.

Stress can shift between a base and derivative, and ordinary spelling does not mark Serbian pitch accent or vowel length. Check a reliable dictionary or audio source for an unfamiliar derivative; never add accent signs to normal prose by guesswork.

💡
If you have not encountered a negative derivative, verify it. A grammatically imaginable prefix combination is not necessarily a Serbian word.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Lexical or sentential negation?

Објашњење је нејасно. — Објашњење није јасно у последњем пасусу.

The explanation is unclear. — The explanation is not clear in the final paragraph. Answer: derived adjective нејасно versus negated copular predicate није јасно.

Task 2: Prefix or free phrase?

Хотел има безалкохолна пића, а чај служи без шећера.

The hotel has nonalcoholic drinks and serves tea without sugar. Answer: established derived adjective безалкохолна; productive без + genitive phrase без шећера.

Common Mistakes

Spacing lexical не- like verbal не

❌ Добио сам не повољан одговор из банке.

Incorrect for the lexical adjective—неповољан is written as one word.

✅ Добио сам неповољан одговор из банке.

I received an unfavorable response from the bank. (male speaker)

Treating all prefixes as interchangeable

❌ Ово је безмогућ задатак.

Incorrect—Serbian derives немогућ with не-, not an invented form with без-.

✅ Ово је немогућ задатак без одговарајућег алата.

This is an impossible task without the proper tool.

Ignoring voicing assimilation

❌ После отказа осећао се безпомоћно.

Incorrect spelling—before voiceless п, без- is written бес-.

✅ После отказа осећао се беспомоћно.

After the dismissal, he felt helpless.

Inventing a derivative instead of using a phrase

❌ Ушла је у ординацију безтерминска.

Incorrect—this invented adjective is not the ordinary way to say ‘without an appointment.’

✅ Ушла је у ординацију без заказаног термина.

She entered the doctor's office without an appointment.

Key Takeaways

  • Joined не- builds a word; separate clause negation denies a predicate.
  • Lexicalized derivatives can mean more than the logical opposite of their base.
  • Ни- builds the negative series, whose clause behavior involves negative concord.
  • Без-/бес- expresses absence and reflects voicing assimilation in spelling.
  • Prefixes are productive but not unlimited; verify unfamiliar derivatives and their stress.
