Negation Scope and Special Cases

Ordinary Serbian negation places не before the finite verb and requires negative concord with words such as нико and ништа. Several common constructions complicate that basic picture: ни/нити coordinate negative alternatives, certain expressions are licensed only in negative or hypothetical environments, and не in endpoint clauses with док does not simply deny the later event. This page covers those construction-specific patterns without attempting the advanced attachment and focus diagnostics treated on negative scope syntax.

Ни…ни and нити…нити

Ни…ни coordinates phrases with the meaning “neither…nor.” In an ordinary finite clause, Serbian negative concord also requires a negative predicate. English uses one overt negative in neither Ana nor Marko came; Serbian marks the negative series on the coordinated phrases and on the verb.

Ни Ана ни Марко нису дошли на јучерашњи састанак.

Neither Ana nor Marko came to yesterday's meeting.

У том кафићу не служе ни доручак ни ручак.

That café serves neither breakfast nor lunch.

The singular names in the first example form a coordinated plural subject, hence plural нису дошли. When one conjunct is masculine, the traditional mixed-gender plural agreement is masculine plural.

Single ни can add an extreme item to the negative domain: “not even.” Expressions such as ни речи, ни динара, and ни прстом are conventional minimizers.

Током расправе није рекао ни речи у своју одбрану.

During the discussion, he did not say a single word in his own defense.

Нико није ни прстом мрднуо да нам помогне.

Nobody lifted a finger to help us.

💡
Serbian negative concord is grammatical agreement in polarity, not a logical cancellation. Нико ништа није рекао contains several negative forms but expresses one negative proposition: “Nobody said anything.”

When to use нити

Нити is particularly useful for coordinating finite predicates or clauses. It can be repeated as нити…нити, or it can follow an already negative clause. In careful standard usage, do not mechanically add another verbal не to the predicate directly introduced by нити.

Нити је позвао нити је послао поруку.

He neither called nor sent a message.

Нисам га видео, нити сам чуо да је долазио.

I did not see him, nor did I hear that he had come.

Она не тражи изговоре нити пребацује кривицу на друге.

She neither makes excuses nor shifts the blame onto others.

Ни readily joins nonfinite constituents inside one clause; нити makes the boundary between predicates or clauses clearer. The pattern ни…ни can also coordinate verbs when the shared negative predicate structure is transparent, but нити is often stylistically cleaner in longer clauses. Нити is neutral in edited prose and somewhat more formal than the most conversational repeated ни.

Negative-polarity expressions

Some expressions naturally occur under negation, prohibition, questions, conditions, or other non-assertive environments. They strengthen a negative statement rather than create an independent second negation.

ExpressionTypical meaning
уопште неnot at all
ни најмањеnot in the least
ни случајноunder no circumstances / absolutely not
ни под којим условимаunder no conditions
ни за живу главуnot for anything in the world (informal, emphatic)

Та промена ми уопште не смета.

That change does not bother me at all.

Ни случајно не отварајте овај поклопац док машина ради.

Under no circumstances open this cover while the machine is running.

The positive-series forms ишта and икога are natural in questions and open conditions: Да ли је ишта остало?, Ако икога сретнеш…. Under straightforward negation, use the negative series and keep verbal negation.

Ако ишта сазнаш о промени реда вожње, одмах ми јави.

If you find out anything about the timetable change, let me know immediately.

Ништа није остало у фрижидеру осим сенфа.

Nothing was left in the fridge except mustard.

Questions and conditions do not force the и- series in every context: a speaker can choose ништа? when expecting a negative answer. That difference is pragmatic, not a free spelling variant.

Anticipatory не with endpoint док

With simultaneous док, the subordinate event overlaps the main one: Док кувам, слушам радио “While I cook, I listen to the radio.” To mark an endpoint—“until something happens”—Serbian commonly uses док не + perfective present. The later event is normally expected to occur, so не does not mean that it will fail to happen. It marks the period during which that event has not yet occurred.

Остаћу у чекаоници док ме лекар не позове.

I will stay in the waiting room until the doctor calls me.

Не искључујте рачунар док се ажурирање не заврши.

Do not turn off the computer until the update is complete.

Compare the two temporal relations:

Читаћу док се не вратиш из продавнице.

I will read until you return from the store.

Читаћу поруке док се враћаш возом из Новог Сада.

I will read the messages while you are traveling back from Novi Sad by train.

In the first, the return is the boundary that ends the reading. In the second, the two activities overlap. The visible не therefore changes the temporal construction, not the speaker's belief about whether the return will happen.

💡
Translate endpoint until as a whole construction, not word by word: док не + perfective present. The не describes “not yet” throughout the waiting interval.

Comparative and before-clauses: do not add a spare не

In comparisons of inequality, Serbian uses него, него што, or него да. Standard Serbian does not normally add an expletive не inside the comparative clause. The comparative meaning is already built into the construction.

Поправка је трајала дуже него што смо очекивали.

The repair took longer than we expected.

Likewise, пре него што “before” normally introduces a positive subordinate predicate when that event is positive. Forms with an extra не occur sporadically and can reflect regional speech, contamination from another construction, or genuine semantic negation; they are not the neutral learner model.

Провери адресу пре него што пошаљеш пакет.

Check the address before you send the package.

If the subordinate content is genuinely negative, не keeps its ordinary meaning. A natural negative proposition needs a context that truly denies the event, not a copied expletive.

Negated objects: accusative is still the default

Modern Serbian does not generally change a direct object to genitive merely because the verb is negated. A definite or bounded object remains accusative.

Нисам прочитала тај уговор до краја.

I did not read that contract to the end.

Нисмо нашли резервни кључ у фиоци.

We did not find the spare key in the drawer.

Genitive is natural in existential and quantity-like expressions and in conventional minimizers: нема воде, нисам чуо ни речи, немамо довољно времена. Older and elevated prose allows a broader “genitive of negation,” but using it for every negated direct object sounds archaic or nonneutral in contemporary Serbian. The distribution is developed on the genitive of negation.

Conventional partial-negation patterns

Several frequent frames negate one alternative, limit a quantity, or correct an earlier label without denying the whole situation.

PatternFunctionExample
не X, него Ycorrectionне у среду, него у четвртак
X, а не Ycontrastive exclusionвозом, а не аутобусом
не само X него и Yadditive escalationне само брже него и јефтиније
не увек / не баш / не многоlimited degree or frequencyне баш убедљиво
не више од / не мање одupper or lower boundне више од десет минута

In не само X него и Y, both X and Y are asserted; the first не is part of an additive rhetorical frame, not a denial of X. This is sometimes called pseudo-negation.

Састанак није одложен, него је премештен у већу салу.

The meeting was not postponed; it was moved to a larger room.

Нису сви учесници остали до краја.

Not all of the participants stayed until the end.

Нова процедура није баш једноставна, али штеди време.

The new procedure is not exactly simple, but it saves time.

The last two are conventional partial readings: нису сви means “not all,” not “none,” and није баш једноставна softens or limits the positive property. For structural ambiguity, focus projection, and more mobile constituent negation, continue to the advanced syntax page rather than generalizing from these fixed high-frequency frames.

A short passage in context

Ни Јелена ни Огњен нису одбили предлог; само нису прихватили све услове. Нису тражили ни више новца нити су захтевали дужи рок, него су замолили да се не баш јасан трећи члан прецизније формулише. Сачекаћемо док правници не пошаљу нову верзију.

Neither Jelena nor Ognjen rejected the proposal; they simply did not accept all the conditions. They neither asked for more money nor demanded a longer deadline; instead, they requested that the not entirely clear third clause be worded more precisely. We will wait until the lawyers send a new version.

The passage combines negative coordination, partial нису…све “not all,” a нити clause, correction with него, degree-limiting не баш, and endpoint док не. None of these visible negatives automatically cancels another; each belongs to a licensed construction.

Common Mistakes

Copying English single negation

❌ Нико је донео ништа за састанак.

Incorrect — Serbian negative pronouns require a negative predicate.

✅ Нико није донео ништа за заједнички ручак.

Nobody brought anything for the shared lunch.

Negating again after нити

❌ Нисам добила одговор, нити нисам успела да их добијем телефоном.

Incorrect in the intended coordinated reading — нити already continues the negative relation; another нисам is redundant and nonstandard here.

✅ Нисам добила одговор, нити сам успела да их добијем телефоном.

I did not receive a reply, nor did I manage to reach them by phone.

Reading док не as a canceled event

❌ Чекаћу док се не отворе врата, али се врата неће отворити.

Contradictory in the ordinary endpoint reading — док се не отворе presents the opening as the boundary being awaited.

✅ Чекаћу овде док се главна врата не отворе.

I will wait here until the main doors open.

Changing every negated object to genitive

❌ Нисам прочитао извештаја који си ми послала.

Incorrect in neutral contemporary Serbian — this definite direct object should remain accusative.

✅ Нисам прочитао извештај који си ми послала јутрос.

I have not read the report you sent me this morning.

Adding ne after comparative него што

❌ Пут је био краћи него што нисмо очекивали.

Incorrect — the extra negative does not belong in the neutral comparative construction.

✅ Пут је био краћи него што смо очекивали.

The journey was shorter than we expected.

Practice

  1. Join each pair with the most natural negative coordinator: “Milica did not call. Milica did not write”; “They serve neither fish nor meat”; “Neither the lift nor the escalator is working.” Decide where the finite negative predicate is required and where нити carries the link.
  2. Explain the meaning contributed by не in each sentence: Нећу кренути док киша не стане.; Нису сви добили позив.; Не путујемо у петак, него у суботу. Then rewrite each so that the semantic contrast changes without merely deleting words.

Key Takeaways

  • Ни…ни coordinates negative phrases with a negative predicate; нити is especially useful between predicates and clauses.
  • Negative-polarity expressions strengthen or depend on a negative/non-assertive environment; Serbian negative concord does not cancel itself.
  • Endpoint док не usually means “until the expected later event occurs.”
  • Standard comparisons with него што and temporal clauses with пре него што do not take an automatically copied extra не.
  • Contemporary definite direct objects normally stay accusative under negation; genitive survives in specific existential, quantitative, stylistic, and minimizer patterns.
