At Home: Rooms and Objects

Talking about a home quickly exposes the logic of Serbian cases. A room can be a location (у кухињи), a destination (у кухињу), or a source (из кухиње). An object can already be на полици or be moved на полицу. The vocabulary becomes reusable when learned as these three-way spatial sets rather than as isolated nouns.

Rooms and their genders

Room/placeGenderLocation
станmasculineу стану
кућаfeminineу кући
дневна собаfeminineу дневној соби
спаваћа собаfeminineу спаваћој соби
кухињаfeminineу кухињи
купатилоneuterу купатилу
ходникmasculineу ходнику
терасаfeminineна тераси
двориштеneuterу дворишту

Дневна соба је светла, а спаваћа соба гледа на тихо двориште.

The living room is bright, and the bedroom faces a quiet courtyard.

Adjectives agree: светла соба, тихо двориште. Гледати на + accusative here means “face/overlook,” so на тихо двориште is not a destination even though the case is accusative; it is a lexical extension of the frame.

Location versus destination with у and на

For interiors, у + locative gives an existing location; у + accusative gives the endpoint of motion.

Деца су у дневној соби, а пас је управо ушао у кухињу.

The children are in the living room, and the dog has just gone into the kitchen.

The children are already located у дневној соби. The dog's movement ends у кухињу. Surfaces use the same case contrast with на:

Телефон је на ниском ормарићу; стави кључеве на полицу изнад њега.

The phone is on the low cabinet; put the keys on the shelf above it.

На ормарићу is locative location. На полицу is accusative destination. Movement inside a room still uses locative for the room: Шетам по соби, not accusative merely because walking occurs.

The broader distinction is mapped on у and на for location and direction.

💡
Store useful triplets: у кухињу — у кухињи — из кухиње and на терасу — на тераси — са терасе. They encode destination, location, and source.

Source completes the spatial set

An у-place usually pairs with source из + genitive; a на-place usually pairs with са + genitive.

Узела сам шоље из кухиње и донела их на терасу.

I took the cups from the kitchen and brought them onto the terrace. (female speaker)

Кад уђеш са терасе у дневну собу, угаси светло напољу.

When you come in from the terrace to the living room, turn off the light outside.

With people and their homes, код + genitive is common: код Ане can mean at Ana's place, while идем код Ане means going to Ana's place. The case stays genitive; the verb supplies location versus destination.

Where exactly is the object?

Many common location prepositions govern genitive or instrumental.

in front of/behindиспред/иза + genitiveиспред врата, иза фотеље
under/over as static relationпод/над + instrumentalпод креветом, над столом

Продужни кабл је иза ормара, а кутија са алатом је под креветом.

The extension cord is behind the wardrobe, and the toolbox is under the bed.

Нова лампа виси над трпезаријским столом.

The new lamp hangs above the dining table.

Над столом describes an existing location with instrumental. In an everyday instruction about where to hang it, окачити изнад стола is often the clearest choice; изнад governs genitive.

Код куће, кући, and из куће

Serbian uses three distinct home expressions:

MeaningExpression
at homeкод куће
homeward/to homeкући
from the house/homeиз куће

Данас радим код куће, а после ручка идем кући код родитеља.

Today I'm working at home, and after lunch I'm going home to my parents' place.

The repetition sounds odd in English but distinguishes location код куће from direction кући. Do not say у кући when you mean the general idiom “at home” unless the physical interior of a particular house is relevant.

Saying what a home contains

To locate a known object, use ordinary је/су:

Пешкири су у ормару у купатилу, на горњој полици.

The towels are in the bathroom cupboard, on the top shelf.

To introduce or quantify something, present existential има remains singular:

У стану има две спаваће собе и довољно места за радни сто.

The apartment has two bedrooms and enough room for a desk.

Negative нема takes genitive:

У малој кухињи нема машине за прање судова.

There is no dishwasher in the small kitchen.

Past and future existence use било је and биће, not past or future personal forms of имати in the neutral standard existential pattern. See existential sentences.

Household instructions and clitics

Common home requests use an imperative plus object clitics. When the clause begins with the imperative, the clitics follow it in their normal order.

Додај ми даљински управљач и врати га на сто кад завршиш.

Pass me the remote control and put it back on the table when you're finished. (informal singular)

Ми is dative recipient and га is accusative masculine object. In a polite or plural request, use додајте, вратите and молим вас if appropriate.

Молим вас, оставите ципеле поред улазних врата.

Please leave your shoes beside the front door. (polite or plural)

The direct imperative is normal as a house instruction when tone and address form fit the relationship.

Situational dialogue

— Где су чисти пешкири? — У купатилу, у белом ормару изнад машине за веш. — А где да оставим кофер? — Стави га у спаваћу собу, поред великог кревета. — Да ли на тераси има сушилице за веш? — Има једна склопива, иза врата.

— Where are the clean towels? — In the bathroom, in the white cupboard above the washing machine. — And where should I leave the suitcase? — Put it in the bedroom, beside the large bed. — Is there a drying rack on the terrace? — There is a folding one behind the door.

The dialogue contrasts known пешкири су with presentational има једна сушилица, and static locatives with destination у спаваћу собу.

Practice

Task 1: Move three objects

State that a book is on a table, dishes are in a cupboard, and shoes are under a bench. Then give instructions moving each object to a new endpoint, changing locative or instrumental into the appropriate accusative phrase.

Task 2: Describe a flat

Introduce two rooms with има, state one missing feature with нема + genitive, and locate three known objects with је/су. Add one source phrase with из or са.

Common Mistakes

❌ Књиге су у високу полицу поред прозора.

Incorrect location case—the books are already there, so у requires locative у високој полици; for a shelf, на is normally more natural.

✅ Књиге су на високој полици поред прозора.

The books are on the high shelf beside the window.

❌ Однеси чаше у кухињи.

Incorrect destination case—однети moves the glasses into the kitchen, so у requires accusative у кухињу.

✅ Однеси чаше у кухињу и стави их на сто поред судопере.

Take the glasses into the kitchen and put them on the table beside the sink.

❌ Вечерас остајем кући код кућу.

Incorrect forms—location is код куће; bare кући expresses direction.

✅ Вечерас остајем код куће.

I'm staying at home tonight.

❌ У купатилу нема чисти пешкири.

Incorrect after negative existential нема—the absent items must be genitive plural.

✅ У купатилу нема чистих пешкира.

There are no clean towels in the bathroom.

Key Takeaways

  • У/на + locative gives a location; у/на + accusative gives a destination.
  • Pair у-places with source из + genitive and на-places with са + genitive.
  • Learn object locations with their governing prepositions: поред/изнад/иза + genitive, под + instrumental.
  • Use код куће for “at home,” кући for “homeward,” and из куће for source.
  • Existential има/нема introduces or quantifies; је/су locates already known objects.
