English routinely packages correction as It was Jelena who sent the report. Serbian has no single all-purpose cleft template. It distributes the same work among word order, sentence stress, focus particles, identificational тај који, pseudoclefts with оно што, and explicit contrasts such as не X, него Y.
The right choice depends on what the listener already knows and which alternative is being rejected. A literal English-looking structure may be grammatical yet pragmatically heavy, or simply unnatural in the intended context.
Neutral Serbian often needs only word order and stress
When the event is already under discussion and the speaker supplies the actor, a postverbal subject can carry corrective focus.
Коначну верзију је послала Јелена, а не Милена.
It was Jelena, not Milena, who sent the final version.
The accusative object establishes the topic; final Јелена answers “who?” The English translation uses a cleft, but Serbian does not need то је or a relative clause.
Likewise, a focused object may stand in a prominent position when context makes the subject and event accessible:
Стари уговор су архивирали, а нови су послали на потпис.
It was the old contract that they archived; the new one they sent for signature.
Case keeps the fronted object identifiable. The two clauses establish a parallel contrast rather than a freely interchangeable order. For the relation between final focus and topic position, see focus placement.
Focus particles make the alternative set explicit
Управо “precisely/it is exactly,” баш “exactly/particularly,” само “only,” and чак “even” associate with a constituent and signal what alternatives are excluded or ranked.
Управо је Јелена приметила неслагање у последњој табели.
It was Jelena in particular who noticed the discrepancy in the final table.
The auxiliary clitic је remains in its early position after the initial focus particle. Moving the particle changes scope:
Јелена је приметила неслагање управо у последњој табели.
Jelena noticed the discrepancy specifically in the final table.
Само је правна служба добила потпуну документацију.
Only the legal department received the complete documentation.
Правна служба је добила само потпуну документацију, не и радне белешке.
The legal department received only the complete documentation, not the working notes as well.
In the last sentence, само restricts the object description. It does not mean that the legal department alone received something. Focus particles are not decorative intensifiers; their placement constructs scope.
Тај који identifies a person or group emphatically
An identificational construction with тај/та/то/ти/те/та који is natural when the speaker identifies the person or entity that uniquely satisfies a description, often with insistence or contrast.
Милица је та која је предложила да се гласање одложи.
Milica is the one who proposed postponing the vote.
Ми смо ти који ћемо сносити последице те одлуке.
We are the ones who will bear the consequences of that decision.
The demonstrative agrees with the identified referent: feminine singular та, masculine plural ти. The relative pronoun agrees in gender and number but takes the case required inside its own clause. Compare:
Марко је тај коме смо поверили оригиналну документацију.
Marko is the one to whom we entrusted the original documentation.
Коме is dative because поверити нешто некоме requires a recipient. English who does not reveal that relation.
This pattern is stronger and heavier than ordinary focus. In an answer to “Who called?”, neutral Звала је Милица is usually better than Милица је та која је звала. The latter suggests a contrast such as “Milica, not the person you assumed.”
Pseudoclefts define one side and identify the other
Оно што... can introduce a free relative meaning “what/the thing that.” The following predicate identifies its value.
Оно што нам сада највише недостаје јесте поуздан распоред испоруке.
What we lack most now is a reliable delivery schedule.
Full stressed јесте supports explicit identification and is common in (formal) exposition. Neutral је is also possible where no polarity contrast is intended. The focused value need not be a noun phrase:
Оно што је комисија тражила било је да се сви прорачуни поново провере.
What the committee requested was for all the calculations to be checked again.
This structure is useful when the first part establishes a category and the second supplies a substantial answer. It can become ponderous if used merely to imitate English.
In conversation, a question–answer sequence often does the job more naturally:
Шта нам недостаје? Јасан рок и особа одговорна за сваки корак.
What are we missing? A clear deadline and a person responsible for each step. (informal)
Correction prefers не... него, а не, or јесте
Serbian directly contrasts alternatives rather than forcing them into a relative clause.
Нисмо оспорили закључак, него начин на који је изведен.
It was not the conclusion that we challenged, but the way it was reached.
With two noun-phrase alternatives, а не is concise:
Састанак је заказан за четвртак, а не за среду.
The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, not Wednesday.
Full јесте contrasts positive polarity, not merely constituent identity:
Уговор јесте потписан, али још није ступио на снагу.
The contract has indeed been signed, but it has not yet entered into force.
The ordinary auxiliary is the clitic је. Accented јесте is selected because the speaker confirms one proposition while qualifying its consequences. Overusing it makes neutral prose sound argumentative.
Cleft-like form does not erase tense or aspect
The relative or finite clause keeps its own aspectual viewpoint and time reference.
Петар је тај који је током целе зиме одржавао стару опрему.
Petar is the one who maintained the old equipment throughout the winter.
Imperfective одржавао је presents the continuing activity. A perfective such as поправио је would instead identify a completed repair. Focus does not turn one viewpoint into the other.
Nor does a fronted focus exempt clitics from second-position constraints:
Баш ту верзију смо му јуче послали.
That exact version is what we sent him yesterday.
The cluster смо му follows the first prosodic constituent баш ту верзију. A word-for-word English arrangement that strands смо or му at the clause edge is impossible.
A formal focus sequence
Оно што ова анализа показује јесте да кашњење није настало у производњи, него током превоза. Управо је друга испорука задржана на граници, а не прва. Зато је превозник тај који треба да достави додатну документацију.
What this analysis shows is that the delay did not arise in production but during transport. It was specifically the second shipment, not the first, that was held at the border. The carrier is therefore the party that must provide additional documentation. (formal)
The first sentence uses a pseudocleft to state the analytical result, the second uses управо plus an explicit alternative, and the third uses тај који to assign responsibility. Repeating any one pattern three times would be stylistically heavy.
Practice
Task 1: Translate one cleft three ways
Express “It was Ana who found the missing receipt” as: an ordinary clause with final subject focus, a clause with управо, and an identificational та која construction. Explain which version is neutral and which is emphatic.
Task 2: Change particle scope
Write two sentences with само: one meaning “Only the editor read the appendix” and one meaning “The editor read only the appendix.” Keep the clitics in a natural position.
Common Mistakes
❌ То је Никола који је јуче позвао.
Unnatural as a routine translation of ‘It was Nikola who called yesterday’; the literal demonstrative cleft is not the neutral Serbian strategy.
✅ Јуче је позвао Никола, а не Марко.
It was Nikola, not Marko, who called yesterday.
❌ Ана је тај који је пронашао грешку.
Incorrect agreement—the identifying demonstrative and relative predicate must match the feminine referent.
✅ Ана је та која је пронашла грешку.
Ana is the one who found the error.
❌ Је управо директорка одобрила измену.
Incorrect—the enclitic auxiliary је cannot stand at the beginning of its clause.
✅ Управо је директорка одобрила измену.
It was precisely the director who approved the amendment.
❌ Само смо послали рачуновођи уговор.
Ambiguous and misleading if the intended meaning is that the contract alone was sent; само appears to restrict the act of sending.
✅ Рачуновођи смо послали само уговор, без прилога.
We sent the accountant only the contract, without the attachments.
Key Takeaways
- English it-clefts often correspond to ordinary Serbian word order and prosody.
- Focus particles identify the relevant alternative set, so their scope must be controlled.
- Тај који is emphatic identification and requires agreement plus the correct relative-pronoun case.
- Оно што... јесте... is useful in formal exposition but heavier than a neutral clause.
- Corrective не... него, а не, and polarity јесте frequently express contrasts more directly than a cleft.
