In Serbian questions, aspect reveals what information the speaker wants: evidence that an activity occurred, confirmation that a result was reached, or details about a repeated routine. In requests, aspect distinguishes an open-ended or repeated action from one bounded task. Politeness comes mainly from wording, person, conditional forms, and tone—not from choosing imperfective by itself.
English Did you read it? or Can you open it? can leave the event boundary vague. Serbian normally chooses between the members of an aspectual network according to the practical purpose of the exchange.
Neutral experience questions
An imperfective question often asks whether someone has ever engaged in an activity or whether that type of event occurred. The endpoint is not the main issue.
Have you read Vladimir Pištalo's new novel?
In a literary conversation, completion may be pragmatically expected, but читао asks about reading experience. The answer can cancel completion without contradiction:
Читао сам га током лета, али сам стао после стотинак страна.
I was reading it during the summer, but stopped after about a hundred pages.
Imperfective is also natural when asking who performed or was engaged in a visible activity.
Who was moving the chairs in the hall?
The speaker may see that the arrangement was disturbed, but does not frame one completed rearrangement as the target. The question seeks the agent of the activity.
Result-oriented questions
Perfective aspect asks whether a relevant boundary was reached. Deadlines, words such as већ “already” and коначно “finally,” and a visible result often create this orientation.
Did you read the contract all the way through?
Who moved the table in front of the window?
The first question requires completed reading. The second treats the table's new position as the result of one bounded move. Compare it with Ко је померао сто?, which can ask who handled or shifted it during an activity without claiming this final placement.
Have you sent the corrected version yet?
Perfective послали matches the practical yes-or-no issue: is the transmission complete? An imperfective Да ли сте слали... would more naturally ask whether sending occurred at all, perhaps as prior experience or on one or more occasions.
The same situation, two different questions
Suppose Jelena was preparing a reply. The questioner can ask about her activity or its outcome.
Was Jelena working on the reply while we were in the meeting?
Did Jelena finish writing the reply before the end of the workday?
Both are past-tense questions. Aspect, not tense, creates the difference. The first answer could be Јесте, али га није завршила “Yes, but she did not finish it.” The second requires confirmation of a completed reply.
Wh-questions follow the same logic:
Шта си радила кад сам те позвао?
What were you doing when I called you?
What did you do when you noticed the error?
Шта си радила? requests an activity or background description. Шта си урадила? requests one bounded response or achievement. Радити : урадити is a lexical aspectual network; the prefix contributes a result meaning, not merely pastness.
Questions about habits and repetition
Imperfective is the unmarked choice when the question concerns a routine, frequency, or method across occasions.
How often do you check your work email?
Which route do you usually take to work?
A perfective can appear inside a repeated frame when each occasion is viewed as a bounded token.
How many times did you check the account balance this week?
Колико пута counts completed checks. The imperfective Колико дуго сте проверавали...? would instead ask how long the checking activity lasted. Repetition therefore does not ban perfective; the question may count complete subevents rather than profile a habit.
Bounded requests
For one practical task with a clear result, Serbian commonly uses a perfective imperative or a modal question with a perfective complement.
Please open the window.
Could you send me the address by noon?
The requested outcomes are a window that has been opened and an address that has been sent. Молим вас and plural ви make the first request polite; the modal question softens the second. Perfective does not make either request rude.
Would you be able to check the final item on the bill?
The conditional бисте могли adds distance and politeness (formal/polite), while perfective проверите still identifies one completed check.
Open-ended, repeated, and facilitative requests
Imperfective requests arise when the desired conduct is ongoing, repeated, or a general service rather than one endpoint.
Please check the work email once a day.
While I speak with the client, write down every date they mention.
The first establishes a repeated routine. The second asks for sustained note-taking during another event.
Imperfective imperatives also occur in conventional invitations to begin or continue an accessible activity:
Улазите, немојте стајати на киши!
Come in; do not stand in the rain!
Here улазите invites the addressee or group to proceed inside, viewing entry as an unfolding movement. Perfective Уђите! is also natural and presents one completed entry. The choice is pragmatic, not a simple politeness scale.
Please, sit down and help yourself to some cake.
Седите is formally ambiguous between present and imperative, but the invitation frame supplies the imperative reading. Perfective послужите се invites one bounded act of taking some cake.
Negative requests and warnings
General prohibitions favor imperfective because they ban conduct; specific warnings can target one perfective outcome.
Please do not leave personal belongings in the hallway.
Be careful not to delete the original file.
The first is a standing request. The second tries to prevent one bounded mishap. The system is treated fully on aspect under negation.
Pragmatic pressure from context
Sometimes both aspects are grammatical but only one answers the immediate need. Imagine a colleague waiting to submit a form:
— Јеси ли попуњавао образац? — Јесам, али нисам попунио последњу страницу.
— Did you work on filling out the form? — I did, but I did not complete the last page.
The imperfective question is compatible with that answer. If submission depends on completion, the useful question is different:
— Јеси ли попунио образац? — Нисам још; остала ми је последња страница.
— Have you completed the form? — Not yet; I still have the last page left.
Perfective попунио makes the result the issue. This is why choosing aspect by English verb alone fails: speakers select the member that supports the conversation's next step.
Common Mistakes
Using imperfective when the question requires a deliverable
Incorrect for the intended completion check — this asks about writing activity, not whether the application was finished.
Did you finish writing the application by the deadline?
Treating every imperfective question as unfinished
Incorrect — an imperfective experience question does not assert non-completion; completion may simply be outside the question's focus.
Have you seen that film? I need someone I can discuss it with.
Assuming perfective requests are inherently rude
Incorrect — perfective identifies one bounded task; politeness comes from the full request.
Could you send me the contract, please?
Using a one-off request for a recurring duty
Incorrect for the intended repeated monitoring — perfective ‘проверите’ requests one completed check during the shift.
Keep checking the email throughout the shift.
Practice
Task 1: Ask the useful question
For each situation, choose писати / написати, читати / прочитати, or проверавати / проверити: (a) you want to know whether a report is ready, (b) you ask about someone's prior experience with a novel, (c) you ask how often an inbox is checked, and (d) you need confirmation of one final check.
Task 2: Make two kinds of request
Write one polite bounded request using Да ли бисте могли да + perfective present and one repeated instruction using an imperfective imperative. Then add молим вас without changing the aspect, and explain why politeness and viewpoint are separate.
Key Takeaways
- Imperfective questions commonly seek activity, experience, habit, or duration; perfective questions seek a bounded result.
- Repeated frames can contain perfective verbs when the question counts completed tokens.
- One-task requests favor perfective; ongoing or recurring instructions favor imperfective.
- Aspect does not itself encode politeness, tense, or truth—context and request design determine the natural choice.
