Question and Relative Adverbs

The same Serbian adverbs can ask a direct question, introduce an embedded question, or connect a relative clause: Где радиш? “Where do you work?”, Не знам где радиш “I don't know where you work,” and зграда где радиш “the building where you work.” The core forms are како, где, када/кад, зашто, колико, одакле, and куда.

English changes auxiliary order between Where is she? and I know where she is. Serbian does not use English-style subject–auxiliary inversion. Its crucial constraint is instead clitic placement: Где си га видео?, Не знам где си га видео.

The central forms

QuestionCore meaningFrequent relative/correlative frame
како?how? in what manner/state?онако како “the way that”
где?where? at/to what place?тамо где “there where”
куда?which way? in what direction?онуда куда “the way along which”
одакле?from where?одатле одакле “from the place from which”
када? / кад?when?онда када “at the time when”
зашто?why?разлог зашто “the reason why”
колико?how much/many/to what degree?толико колико “as much as”
докле?how far? until when?дотле докле “as far/long as”

Кад and када are both standard. Short кад is very frequent in speech and writing; full када can sound more deliberate or avoid an awkward sound sequence, but the difference is not a simple informal/formal split.

Када почиње представа и колико траје?

When does the performance begin, and how long does it last?

Како си успела да завршиш све пре рока?

How did you manage to finish everything before the deadline?

Зашто је улаз затворен и одакле сада улазимо?

Why is the entrance closed, and where do we enter from now?

Где and куда: useful contrast, genuine overlap

Traditional grids contrast locational где? “where?” with directional or route-oriented куда? “which way?” Contemporary Serbian, however, very commonly uses где for destinations too. Где идеш? is neutral everyday Serbian, not an error. Use куда when the route or direction itself is salient, or when you want to make that contrast explicit.

Где идеш после предавања? — Идем код Ане да јој однесем књигу.

Where are you going after the lecture? — I'm going to Ana's to take her a book.

Куда да идемо ако је главни пут затворен? — Овуда, кроз парк.

Which way should we go if the main road is closed? — This way, through the park.

Камо “whither?” is grammatical but uncommon in contemporary Serbian and usually sounds (literary); it remains ordinary in Croatian standard. The adverbs-of-place page gives the full location, direction, route, and source system without pretending that everyday usage preserves a rigid grid.

💡
Use где freely for both location and an ordinary destination. Choose куда when asking “which way/in what direction?”, especially when the answer is a route such as овуда or преко моста.

Direct questions and clitic position

A question adverb normally occupies the initial focus position. Unstressed auxiliaries and pronouns then form their normal cluster after it.

Где си ми оставио резервни кључ?

Where did you leave my spare key?

Када ћеш јој рећи да је састанак померен?

When will you tell her that the meeting has been rescheduled?

Како ти се допада нови распоред канцеларије?

How do you like the new office layout?

Serbian does not add do/does/did. Nor does it place a stressed subject between the question word and an auxiliary merely to imitate English. Где је Марко? and Где је Марко оставио торбу? already have the natural question structure.

Questions may leave a questioned expression in its ordinary position as an echo question, usually expressing surprise or requesting repetition: Идеш куда? “You're going where?” This is (informal) and pragmatically marked, not the neutral template.

Чекај, послали су пакет одакле?

Wait, they sent the package from where?

Embedded questions keep the question word

After verbs such as знати, питати, објаснити, сећати се, the interrogative adverb introduces an embedded information gap. There is no English-style inversion and no extra да ли after a wh-word.

Не знам где је Марко оставио уговор.

I don't know where Marko left the contract.

Питај рецепционерку када се служи доручак.

Ask the receptionist when breakfast is served.

Можеш ли да ми објасниш зашто се апликација стално искључује?

Can you explain to me why the app keeps shutting down?

In где га је оставио, the question word provides the first constituent and the clitic order remains га је. In clauses with a full copular form, Не знам где је Марко means “I don't know where Marko is”; no rearrangement equivalent to English where Marko is has to be learned separately.

The page on indirect and rhetorical questions covers reporting verbs, punctuation, and pragmatic effects in more detail.

Relative and connective uses

Relative adverbs can connect a subordinate clause to a place, time, manner, amount, or reason. A demonstrative correlate can appear in the main clause, but it is often omitted when the relation is clear.

Сешћемо тамо где има више светла и мање буке.

We'll sit where there is more light and less noise.

Позови ме кад стигнеш на станицу.

Call me when you arrive at the station.

Уради онако како смо се јуче договорили.

Do it the way we agreed yesterday.

Остани колико ти одговара; не мораш да журиш.

Stay as long as suits you; you don't have to hurry.

Correlates make the relation explicit: тамо где, онда када, онако како, толико колико. They are especially useful in contrast or careful exposition, but mechanically including both halves can sound heavy.

Све се променило онда када смо добили резултате анализе.

Everything changed when we received the analysis results.

With a concrete place noun, Serbian can use где naturally in everyday language: кафић где смо се упознали. More formal edited prose may prefer a case-marked relative construction such as кафић у којем смо се упознали (formal), especially when the precise prepositional relation matters. This is a stylistic and structural choice, not proof that conversational где is ungrammatical.

Вратили смо се у село где смо провели једно лето као студенти.

We returned to the village where we spent a summer as students.

Зашто, зато што, and јер

Зашто? asks for a reason. A common answer uses зато што + clause “because,” or јер + clause. Main-clause зато means “for that reason/therefore”: Воз је отказан, па сам зато отишао аутобусом “The train was canceled, so I went by bus.” Do not confuse this result adverb with the unified causal conjunction зато што.

Зашто ниси дошао? — Зато што ми је отказан воз.

Why didn't you come? — Because my train was canceled.

Do not combine question зашто and answer conjunction јер into зашто јер. Also distinguish causal зато што from result зато “therefore/for that reason.”

Колико: quantity, degree, and duration

Колико asks about count with a genitive noun, amount, degree, price, or duration. The reply determines its grammatical environment.

Колико гостију долази и колико дуго остају?

How many guests are coming, and how long are they staying?

Нисам знао колико је овај посао захтеван док нисам почео да га радим.

I didn't know how demanding this job was until I started doing it.

As an exclamative, колико expresses a high degree rather than requesting information: Колико си порастао! “How much you've grown!” Intonation and punctuation distinguish this from a question.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Direct, embedded, or relative?

Где је сала? Не знам где је сала, али ћу питати човека који ради тамо где се продају карте.

Where is the hall? I don't know where the hall is, but I'll ask the man who works where tickets are sold. Answer: direct question, embedded question, then relative place clause.

Task 2: Где or куда?

Где вечерас идете? Куда треба да идемо да стигнемо до тог ресторана док трају радови?

Where are you going tonight? Which way should we go to reach that restaurant while the roadworks are underway? Answer: ordinary destination где; route-focused куда.

Common Mistakes

Copying English auxiliary order

❌ Где ти си купио ту јакну?

Incorrect — the auxiliary clitic follows the initial question word, and the unnecessary subject does not split the cluster.

✅ Где си купио ту јакну?

Where did you buy that jacket?

Adding да ли after a wh-word

❌ Не знам када да ли почиње пријава.

Incorrect — када itself introduces the embedded question; do not add да ли.

✅ Не знам када почиње пријава.

I don't know when registration begins.

Enforcing an obsolete destination rule

❌ Погрешно је рећи „Где идеш?“; правилно је само „Куда идеш?“

Incorrect claim — contemporary standard Serbian commonly uses где for an ordinary destination.

✅ Где идеш после посла?

Where are you going after work?

Answering зашто with a mixed connector

❌ Остао сам код куће зашто јер сам имао температуру.

Incorrect — use зато што or јер to introduce the cause.

✅ Остао сам код куће јер сам имао температуру.

I stayed home because I had a fever.

Key Takeaways

  • Како, где, када, зашто, колико can ask questions or introduce subordinate clauses.
  • Serbian has no English-style subject–auxiliary inversion; clitics occupy their normal early position.
  • Где commonly covers destination, while куда foregrounds route or direction.
  • Correlates such as тамо где and онако како clarify a relation but are not always obligatory.
  • Keep зашто “why?” distinct from causal зато што/јер “because.”
