a se gândi — to think (about)

A se gândi ("to think about, to ponder, to consider") is the reflexive companion of bare a gândi. It is a fourth-conjugation verb in -i with the -esc infix (mă gândesc, te gândești, se gândește), and it always carries an accusative reflexive clitic — the mă/te/se series — in every single cell of its paradigm. There is no clitic-free form: you cannot say gândesc la tine, only mă gândesc la tine.

The thing an English speaker most needs to internalize is that "think about" is built from two pieces that always travel together: the reflexive clitic and the preposition la. A se gândi la means "to direct your mind at" a person, a plan, a problem. This is a different verb from bare transitive a gândi ("to reason, to form thoughts") and from a crede ("to believe, to hold an opinion" — cred că plouă, never gândesc că plouă). One English "think" splits into three Romanian patterns, and a se gândi la is by far the most frequent in conversation.

Prezent indicativ

The -esc infix appears in the singular and 3rd-person plural; the clitic precedes the verb.

PersonForm
eumă gândesc
tute gândești
el / ease gândește
noine gândim
voivă gândiți
ei / elese gândesc
💡
The infix shows only in mă gândesc / te gândești / se gândește and 3rd-plural se gândesc. The noi and voi forms drop it: ne gândim, vă gândiți. This in-out rhythm of the -esc infix is the same in every fourth-conjugation verb of this type.

Imperfect

The infix disappears; the clitic stays in front.

PersonForm
eumă gândeam
tute gândeai
el / ease gândea
noine gândeam
voivă gândeați
ei / elese gândeau

Perfect compus

Here the clitic fuses with the auxiliary a avea. The 1sg mă + am becomes m-am, and se + a becomes s-a. This contraction is obligatory.

PersonForm
eum-am gândit
tute-ai gândit
el / eas-a gândit
noine-am gândit
voiv-ați gândit
ei / eles-au gândit

Mai-mult-ca-perfectul (pluperfect)

A synthetic tense — no auxiliary — so the clitic simply precedes the verb.

PersonForm
eumă gândisem
tute gândiseși
el / ease gândise
noine gândiserăm
voivă gândiserăți
ei / elese gândiseră

Viitor (future)

In the voi-future the clitic sits between the auxiliary and the infinitive; in the o să-future it precedes the subjunctive verb.

Personvoi-future (formal)o să-future (informal)
eumă voi gândio să mă gândesc
tute vei gândio să te gândești
el / ease va gândio să se gândească
noine vom gândio să ne gândim
voivă veți gândio să vă gândiți
ei / elese vor gândio să se gândească

Conjunctiv prezent

The infix returns; third person is să se gândească.

PersonForm
eusă mă gândesc
tusă te gândești
el / easă se gândească
noisă ne gândim
voisă vă gândiți
ei / elesă se gândească

Condițional prezent

PersonForm
eum-aș gândi
tute-ai gândi
el / eas-ar gândi
noine-am gândi
voiv-ați gândi
ei / eles-ar gândi

Imperativ

The affirmative command attaches the clitic to the end of the verb; the negative places it before the bare infinitive.

TypeSingular (tu)Plural (voi)
Affirmativegândește-te!gândiți-vă!
Negativenu te gândi!nu vă gândiți!
💡
Clitic position flips with polarity. Affirmative: clitic glued to the back — gândește-te! Negative: clitic in front of the bare infinitive — nu te gândi! The very common gândește-te bine! ("think it over!") shows the affirmative pattern in action.

Non-finite forms

In the gerund the clitic attaches to the end with a linking -u-: gândindu-mă.

Usage

The everyday meaning — "to think about" a person or thing, always with la:

Mă gândesc la tine tot timpul.

I think about you all the time.

La ce te gândești? Ești tăcut de o oră.

What are you thinking about? You've been quiet for an hour.

M-am gândit toată noaptea la propunerea ta.

I thought about your offer all night.

"To consider doing something," followed by the subjunctive:

Ne gândim să ne luăm o pisică.

We're thinking of getting a cat.

The imperative as advice or a gentle warning:

Gândește-te bine înainte să-i răspunzi.

Think it over carefully before you answer him.

Gândiți-vă și la ceilalți, nu doar la voi.

Think about the others too, not just yourselves.

A gerund clause:

Gândindu-mă mai bine, cred că ai dreptate.

On second thought, I think you're right.

Common Mistakes

❌ Gândesc la tine.

Incorrect — 'think about' needs the reflexive clitic: mă gândesc.

✅ Mă gândesc la tine.

I'm thinking about you.

❌ Mă gândesc pe problema asta.

Incorrect — the preposition is la, not pe.

✅ Mă gândesc la problema asta.

I'm thinking about this problem.

❌ Eu am gândit la asta.

Incorrect — dropped clitic; the perfect fuses to m-am gândit.

✅ M-am gândit la asta.

I thought about that.

❌ Gânde-te bine!

Incorrect — the imperative keeps the infix: gândește-te.

✅ Gândește-te bine!

Think it over carefully!

❌ Nu gândește-te la asta!

Incorrect — the negative command puts the clitic before the bare infinitive.

✅ Nu te gândi la asta!

Don't think about that!
