a povesti — to tell (a story)

A povesti ("to tell, to recount, to narrate") is a fourth-conjugation verb in -i, and it belongs to the large subgroup that inserts the -esc infix in the singular and 3rd plural of the present: povestesc, povestești, povestește — but povestim, povestiți without it. This -esc infix is the single most important thing to internalize, because it is shared by hundreds of common verbs (a vorbivorbesc, a citicitesc, a iubiiubesc), and once you have the pattern here it transfers everywhere.

The verb's argument structure is the second key point: the person you tell something to — the listener — goes in the dative: îmi povestește = "tells to me," ne-a povestit = "told to us." This is the same dative-recipient logic you see with a spune and a explica. And meaning is the third: a povesti specifically means to recount or narrate — to tell a story, an experience, an event with some unfolding to it. That separates it cleanly from a spune ("to say, to tell" a fact or a piece of information) and the more colloquial a zice ("to say"). You spui an address or a name; you povestești what happened on your trip.

Prezent indicativ

The -esc infix appears in the 1sg, 2sg, 3sg, and 3pl; the noi/voi forms have the bare stem. Note 3sg povestește (with the infix and -e) vs. 3pl povestesc.

Usage

The listener is in the dative, usually a clitic before the verb: îmi povestește, îți povestesc, ne-a povestit, le povestesc. The thing recounted is the direct object — a story, an event, or a cum/ce clause:

Povestește-le copiilor cum ai învățat să mergi pe bicicletă.

Tell the kids how you learned to ride a bike.

The object is often an event or experience that unfolds — that is the heart of a povesti:

Hai să-mi povestești o întâmplare amuzantă din copilărie.

Come on, tell me a funny story from your childhood.

It can take a plain noun object — un basm, o poveste, o întâmplare:

Ne-a povestit un basm de care nu mai auzisem niciodată.

She told us a fairy tale we'd never heard before.

The related noun poveste ("story, tale") sits at the root of the verb — povestea is "the story":

E o poveste lungă, ți-o povestesc altă dată.

It's a long story, I'll tell it to you another time.

The verb also works absolutely, meaning "to chat, to talk things over," especially with a sta de povești / a sta la povești:

Am stat toată seara la povești, ca pe vremuri.

We sat chatting all evening, just like old times.

💡
Don't confuse a povesti with a spune and a zice. Use a spune to tell a fact or convey information (spune-mi adevărul — "tell me the truth"; spune-mi cum te cheamă — "tell me your name"). Use a zice as the everyday, colloquial "to say" (ce-ai zis? — "what did you say?"). Reserve a povesti for recounting — narrating a story or relating what happened, where there's a sequence of events: povestește-mi cum a fost, "tell me how it went."

Common Mistakes

Don't drop the -esc infix in the singular present:

❌ Eu povestesc... ❌ Bunica ne poveste un basm.

Incorrect — the 3sg present is povestește, with the -esc infix.

✅ Bunica ne povestește un basm.

Grandma tells us a fairy tale.

Don't put the listener in the accusative — you tell to someone (dative):

❌ Te povestesc ce s-a întâmplat.

Incorrect — the listener is dative: îți, not te.

✅ Îți povestesc ce s-a întâmplat.

I'll tell you what happened.

Don't use the indicative povestește in the subjunctive 3rd person:

❌ Vreau să-mi povestește cum a fost.

Incorrect — the subjunctive 3rd person is povestească.

✅ Vreau să-mi povestească cum a fost.

I want him to tell me how it went.

Don't use a povesti for plain facts where a spune is wanted:

❌ Povestește-mi cât e ceasul.

Incorrect — for a simple fact, use a spune: spune-mi.

✅ Spune-mi cât e ceasul.

Tell me what time it is.
