minum and meminum: Verb Family and Usage

Indonesian normally uses bare minum for everyday drinking, even before a direct expression such as air, kopi, or obat. Meminum is a standard actor-voice form, but it is more common when careful narration, instructions, or reporting highlights a particular liquid and its consumption. That register contrastβ€”not tenseβ€”is the key to this family.

The related words also change grammatical category and valency: diminum centers what is drunk, minuman names a beverage, peminum classifies a habitual drinker, and meminumkan means cause or help someone to drink. This page explains those established words; the general affix systems belong on their dedicated pages.

No person or tense paradigm

Minum is an invariant predicate, not an infinitive equivalent of to drink. It takes no ending for the subject or time.

FrameIndonesianInterpretive cue

third personDia minum air.dia; same predicate
pluralMereka minum air.mereka; same predicate
pastTadi saya sudah minum.tadi and sudah
ongoingDia sedang minum.sedang

Saya minum air sebelum naik bus.

I drink water before getting on the bus.

Mereka sedang minum kopi di teras.

They are drinking coffee on the terrace.

Besok pagi kamu harus minum obat lagi.

Tomorrow morning you must take the medicine again.

The words sedang, sudah, akan, and harus stay separate. Indonesian does not create forms corresponding to English drinks, drank, or will drink.

Bare minum in everyday interaction

Use minum alone when the drink is understood, or follow it directly with the beverage. Place, time, company, and manner occur in ordinary adjunct phrases.

Mau minum apa, teh atau kopi?

What would you like to drink, tea or coffee? (everyday)

Kami minum teh sambil menunggu hujan reda.

We drank tea while waiting for the rain to stop.

Jangan lupa minum cukup air selama perjalanan.

Do not forget to drink enough water during the journey.

Setelah berlari, dia minum langsung dari botolnya.

After running, he/she drank straight from the bottle.

Minum also covers taking medicine, including tablets, when Indonesian conceptualizes the treatment as something swallowed. English chooses take medicine, but literal mengambil obat usually means physically pick up or collect the medicine.

Dokter menyuruh saya minum obat ini setelah makan.

The doctor told me to take this medicine after eating.

Kamu sudah minum obat atau baru mengambilnya dari apotek?

Have you taken the medicine, or have you only just picked it up from the pharmacy?

That pair shows why word-by-word translation is unreliable: minum obat is ingestion, whereas mengambil obat is obtaining or picking it up.

Meminum: explicit, affected consumption

Meminum gives the root full actor-voice marking. It is frequent in careful description, formal instructions, health reporting, and narratives that track the liquid as an affected theme. In an ordinary offer such as β€œDo you want coffee?”, bare minum is usually more natural.

For the wider syntactic pattern rather than this verb's lexical register, see the actor-voice overview.

Peserta diminta meminum seluruh larutan dalam waktu lima menit.

Participants are asked to drink the entire solution within five minutes. (formal)

Ia meminum segelas air sebelum memberikan pidato.

He/She drank a glass of water before giving the speech. (careful narrative)

Pasien tidak boleh meminum cairan apa pun sebelum pemeriksaan.

The patient must not drink any liquid before the examination. (formal)

Menurut saksi, pengemudi itu sempat meminum kopi di warung tersebut.

According to the witness, the driver had time to drink coffee at that food stall. (formal/reporting)

The contrast is a tendency of discourse and register, not a rule that meminum must always sound bureaucratic. A speaker may use it when the quantity or completion is important. Conversely, Saya minum kopi setiap pagi remains fully standard and does not lack an actor prefix.

πŸ’‘
For an ordinary human habit or offer, start with minum. Use meminum when a careful context tracks a particular liquid, amount, restriction, or completed act.

Diminum: medicine or drink as the point of departure

Diminum is the patient-oriented counterpart of meminum. It is especially common on medicine labels, in instructions, and in statements about whether a liquid is safe or suitable to consume.

Obat ini diminum dua kali sehari setelah makan.

This medicine is taken twice a day after meals. (instructional)

Air dari keran itu belum tentu aman diminum.

The tap water is not necessarily safe to drink.

Kopinya diminum Rudi sebelum sempat dingin.

The coffee was drunk by Rudi before it had time to cool.

Larutan tersebut harus segera diminum setelah dicampur.

The solution must be drunk immediately after being mixed. (formal instruction)

Passive di- attaches in diminum, but locative di remains separate in di rumah or di apotek. The actor can follow directly (diminum Rudi), occur with oleh, or be omitted when instructions make the patient more relevant.

Minuman and air minum

Minuman is the established -an noun β€œdrink/beverage.” It can name one prepared drink or a beverage category.

Kami memesan dua minuman panas karena udara cukup dingin.

We ordered two hot drinks because the air was quite cold.

Minuman dingin tersedia di lemari sebelah kiri.

Cold drinks are available in the cabinet on the left.

Restoran itu tidak menjual minuman beralkohol.

That restaurant does not sell alcoholic beverages.

Ia memilih minuman tanpa gula saat makan siang.

He/She chose a sugar-free drink at lunch.

Air minum is a noun compound meaning water fit or intended for drinking. It is not identical to minuman air, which is not the normal name for drinking water.

Setiap peserta diminta membawa botol air minum sendiri.

Each participant is asked to bring their own bottle of drinking water.

The same adjective ringan yields different conventional combinations: minuman ringan commonly means a nonalcoholic soft drink or packaged refreshment and does not necessarily imply carbonation, while makanan ringan means a snack. These are lexical collocations, not predictable outputs of the suffix alone.

Peminum: a habitual category

Peminum denotes someone characterized by what or how they drink. It is most natural with a following category or in a description of habit.

Sebagai peminum kopi, Ayah selalu membawa termos kecil.

As a coffee drinker, Dad always carries a small thermos.

Ia bukan peminum berat dan jarang memesan alkohol.

He/She is not a heavy drinker and rarely orders alcohol.

Survei itu membandingkan peminum teh dan peminum kopi.

The survey compares tea drinkers and coffee drinkers. (formal)

Without an expressed beverage, peminum berat conventionally suggests habitual heavy alcohol consumption. Do not use peminum simply for someone holding a glass right now; it classifies a person by a recurring disposition.

Meminumkan: cause or help someone to drink

Meminumkan is transitive and causative. Its direct object is typically the liquid or medicine administered, while the recipient is introduced with kepada. It is useful when someone actively helps a child, patient, or animal swallow something.

Ibu meminumkan obat kepada anaknya dengan sendok kecil.

The mother administered medicine to her child with a small spoon.

Perawat meminumkan sedikit air kepada pasien itu.

The nurse helped the patient drink a little water.

Obat cacing itu diminumkan kepada kucing setelah makan.

The deworming medicine was administered to the cat after it ate.

Everyday speech often prefers transparent memberi minum β€œgive something to drink” when no forced administration is implied.

Tolong beri minum anjing itu setelah berjalan-jalan.

Please give the dog something to drink after the walk.

The form meminumkan is not just a longer synonym of meminum. Ia meminum obat means the person takes it; ia meminumkan obat kepada anaknya means the person causes or helps the child to take it.

πŸ’‘
Keep the roles distinct: meminum X has X as the consumed liquid; meminumkan X kepada Y has X as the administered liquid and Y as its recipient.

Idiomatic and register-sensitive extensions

Minum-minum can mean having drinks socially and, depending on context, may imply alcohol (informal). Terminum profiles something drunk accidentally.

Mereka minum-minum di teras kos setelah ujian terakhir.

They had drinks on the boarding house terrace after the final exam. (informal; alcohol possible from context)

Saya tidak sengaja terminum air yang terlalu asin.

I accidentally drank water that was far too salty.

These meanings are established lexical extensions. Keep the reduplication hyphen in minum-minum, but write actual affixed terminum solid.

Common Mistakes

1. Translating take medicine with mengambil

❌ Saya mengambil obat itu setelah makan malam.

Incorrect for the intended ingestion β€” this normally means I pick up or collect the medicine.

βœ… Saya minum obat itu setelah makan malam.

I take that medicine after dinner.

2. Treating meminum as obligatory in everyday speech

❌ Kamu mau meminum apa di kafe?

Overly marked for an ordinary casual offer.

βœ… Kamu mau minum apa di kafe?

What do you want to drink at the cafe? (everyday)

3. Splitting passive di-

❌ Obat itu harus di minum sebelum tidur.

Incorrect spelling β€” passive di- attaches to the verb.

βœ… Obat itu harus diminum sebelum tidur.

That medicine must be taken before bed.

4. Confusing minuman with air minum

❌ Panitia menyediakan minuman air dalam botol.

Incorrect collocation for bottled drinking water.

βœ… Panitia menyediakan air minum dalam botol.

The committee provides drinking water in bottles.

5. Reversing the causer and consumer

❌ Bayi itu meminumkan susu kepada ibunya.

Incorrect for the intended meaning β€” this makes the baby administer the milk.

βœ… Ibunya meminumkan susu kepada bayi itu.

The mother helps the baby drink the milk.
