The tidur family separates four perspectives that English often compresses into sleep or fall asleep. Bare tidur names the state or activity; tertidur highlights entering sleep, often without intending to; menidurkan introduces someone who causes another participant to sleep; and ketiduran presents accidental sleep from the affected person's perspective. The lexical compound tempat tidur names a bed.
The forms are related, but speakers learn their meanings and argument patterns as complete words. General ter-, ke-...-an, and -kan formation belongs on the Word Formation and Voice pages.
No person or tense paradigm
Tidur is an invariant predicate, not an infinitive equivalent of English to sleep. It never agrees with its subject or receives a tense ending.
| Frame | Indonesian | Interpretive cue |
|---|---|---|
| first person | Saya tidur pukul sepuluh. | saya; no agreement |
| third person | Dia tidur pukul sepuluh. | dia; same predicate |
| plural | Mereka tidur pukul sepuluh. | mereka; same predicate |
| past | Tadi malam saya tidur nyenyak. | tadi malam |
| ongoing | Anak itu sedang tidur. | sedang |
| future | Nanti saya akan tidur lebih awal. | nanti and akan |
Saya tidur sekitar tujuh jam setiap malam.
I sleep about seven hours every night.
Anak-anak sedang tidur, jadi tolong kecilkan suara televisi.
The children are sleeping, so please turn down the television.
Malam ini kami akan tidur lebih awal.
Tonight we will go to sleep earlier.
English distinguishes sleep, sleeps, slept, and sleeping. Indonesian leaves tidur unchanged and lets the subject, time expression, or separate aspect word carry that information.
Tidur: the state or planned activity
Tidur is intransitive. It takes no direct object. A location follows di, a duration can follow directly or with selama, and time, posture, or manner adds detail.
Saya tidur di kamar belakang karena kamar depan sedang dicat.
I am sleeping in the back bedroom because the front one is being painted.
Dia tidur selama dua jam setelah penerbangan malam.
He/She slept for two hours after the night flight.
Bayi itu tidur nyenyak di pelukan ayahnya.
The baby is sleeping soundly in the father's arms.
Saya sulit tidur kalau minum kopi setelah pukul empat sore.
I have trouble sleeping if I drink coffee after four in the afternoon.
Kami tidur siang sebentar sebelum melanjutkan perjalanan.
We took a short nap before continuing the journey.
Tidur siang is βnap,β while tidur malam refers to nighttime sleep. Pergi tidur explicitly profiles going to bed; plain tidur pukul sepuluh can mean go to sleep or sleep at ten by context.
Aku mau pergi tidur dulu; besok harus bangun pagi.
I'm going to bed now; I have to get up early tomorrow. (informal)
Tertidur: reaching the sleeping state
Tertidur commonly means βfall asleepβ or βend up asleep.β It highlights the transition into sleep or the resulting condition, frequently with reduced control. It need not imply that serious trouble followed.
Keponakan saya tertidur di kursi sambil menunggu ayahnya.
My niece/nephew fell asleep in the chair while waiting for their father.
Saya baru tertidur ketika telepon berdering.
I had only just fallen asleep when the phone rang.
Penumpang di sebelah saya tertidur sepanjang penerbangan.
The passenger beside me slept throughout the flight.
Setelah mendengar cerita itu, bayi akhirnya tertidur.
After hearing the story, the baby finally fell asleep.
Compare Bayi tidur βthe baby is asleep/sleepsβ with Bayi tertidur βthe baby falls or has fallen asleep.β The first locates a state; the second presents its onset or achieved result. That endpoint orientation is central to the ter- system.
Menidurkan: causing someone to sleep
Menidurkan is transitive. The subject causes, helps, or arranges for the direct object to enter the sleeping state. With a child, it often means βput to bedβ rather than force sleep instantaneously.
Ayah menidurkan bayi itu sambil menyanyikan lagu pelan.
The father puts the baby to sleep while singing softly.
Saya menidurkan anak-anak lebih awal sebelum perjalanan pagi.
I put the children to bed earlier before the morning trip.
Pengasuh sedang menidurkan adik di kamar depan.
The caregiver is putting my younger sibling to bed in the front bedroom.
Musik yang lembut membantu menidurkan pasien yang gelisah.
Soft music helps a restless patient fall asleep.
The original sleeper becomes the object: bayi tidur becomes ayah menidurkan bayi. The general causative pattern is explained in the overview of -kan verbs, but menidurkan and its everyday collocations should be learned as a family.
Ditidurkan: the sleeper as passive subject
Ditidurkan presents the participant put to sleep as the subject or topic. In household contexts it can mean βbe put to bed.β In medical contexts it may mean medically sedated or placed under anesthesia (formal/medical); the surrounding words must make that reading clear.
Bayi itu ditidurkan neneknya setelah minum susu.
The baby was put to bed by the grandmother after drinking milk.
Anak-anak ditidurkan di kamar yang paling tenang.
The children were put to bed in the quietest room.
Pasien akan ditidurkan dengan obat bius sebelum operasi.
The patient will be put under anesthesia before the operation. (formal/medical)
Passive di- attaches in ditidurkan. Locative di kamar remains two words. Akan ditidurkan di kamar operasi therefore contains a separate future marker, one passive verb, and one locative phrase.
Ketiduran: accidental sleep and its consequence
Ketiduran is extremely common in conversation (informal) when someone falls asleep unintentionally, sleeps through something, or discovers that sleep caused an inconvenience. The subject is the affected experiencer.
Saya ketiduran di kereta dan melewati stasiun tujuan.
I accidentally fell asleep on the train and missed my stop. (informal)
Maaf saya tidak membalas pesanmu; tadi malam saya ketiduran.
Sorry I did not reply to your message; I accidentally fell asleep last night. (informal)
Dia ketiduran saat menunggu cucian selesai.
He/She dozed off while waiting for the laundry to finish. (informal)
Saya hampir ketinggalan bus karena ketiduran.
I almost missed the bus because I accidentally fell asleep. (informal)
Ketiduran does not automatically mean βsleep later than intended.β If the missed alarm and late waking are central, kesiangan or an explicit clause may be clearer.
Saya bangun kesiangan karena alarmnya tidak berbunyi.
I woke up late because the alarm did not ring.
Tertidur and ketiduran can describe the same physical transition. Tertidur foregrounds reaching sleep; ketiduran more readily presents it as unintended and consequential for the experiencer. Formal reporting often prefers tertidur tanpa sengaja if the conversational coloring of ketiduran is unwanted.
Tempat tidur and established expressions
Tempat tidur is the ordinary noun compound for βbed,β literally a place for sleeping. It is written as two words because it is a phrase, not a prefixed or suffixed derivative.
Koper itu saya taruh di bawah tempat tidur.
I put the suitcase under the bed.
Kamar ini memiliki dua tempat tidur dan satu meja kecil.
This room has two beds and one small table.
Tidur ayam means light, easily disturbed sleep, and tidur-tiduran means lie around or rest without necessarily sleeping (informal). These are established combinations, not literal translations to be freely rebuilt.
Semalaman saya hanya tidur ayam karena suara kendaraan.
I slept very lightly all night because of the traffic noise. (informal)
Hari Minggu saya cuma tidur-tiduran sambil membaca.
On Sunday I just lay around reading. (informal)
The hyphen in tidur-tiduran marks reduplication. Actual affixed formsβtertidur, menidurkan, ditidurkan, ketiduranβare solid.
Common Mistakes
1. Using tidur transitively
β Saya tidur bayi itu sebelum makan malam.
Incorrect β bare tidur cannot take the sleeper as an object.
β Saya menidurkan bayi itu sebelum makan malam.
I put the baby to sleep before dinner.
2. Using tertidur for a deliberate command
β Tertidurlah sekarang supaya besok tidak kesiangan.
Unnatural β tertidur presents an onset or result, not a controllable command.
β Tidurlah sekarang supaya besok tidak kesiangan.
Go to sleep now so that you do not oversleep tomorrow.
3. Using ketiduran for a planned routine
β Bayi ketiduran pukul delapan setiap malam sesuai jadwal.
Unnatural β ketiduran presents unintended sleep, not a scheduled routine.
β Bayi tidur pukul delapan setiap malam sesuai jadwal.
The baby goes to sleep at eight every night on schedule.
4. Splitting the passive prefix
β Pasien itu akan di tidurkan sebelum operasi.
Incorrect spelling β passive di- attaches to the verb.
β Pasien itu akan ditidurkan sebelum operasi.
The patient will be put under anesthesia before the operation.
5. Writing the compound as one derivative
β Sepatunya ada di bawah tempattidur.
Incorrect spelling β tempat tidur is a two-word noun compound.
β Sepatunya ada di bawah tempat tidur.
The shoes are under the bed.
