The spelling bangun leads into two distinct modern lexical branches. In the waking branch, bare bangun means wake or get up, and causative membangunkan means wake someone. In the construction branch, membangun means build or develop, dibangun presents what is built, bangunan names a structure, and pembangunan names a process of construction or development. English build up and wake up do not predict which Indonesian form belongs to which branch.
This lexical split is more important than a mechanical affix analysis. General meN-, di-, -kan, -an, and peN-...-an rules remain on their dedicated pages.
No person or tense paradigm
Waking bangun is an invariant predicate. It is not an infinitive and never acquires person or tense endings.
| Frame | Indonesian | Interpretive cue |
|---|---|---|
| first person | Saya bangun pagi. | saya; no agreement |
| third person | Dia bangun pagi. | dia; same predicate |
| plural | Mereka bangun pagi. | mereka; same predicate |
| past | Kemarin saya bangun terlambat. | kemarin |
| result | Dia sudah bangun. | sudah |
| future | Besok kami akan bangun pagi. | besok and akan |
Saya bangun pagi setiap hari kerja.
I get up early every workday.
Dia sudah bangun, tetapi masih duduk di tempat tidur.
He/She is already awake but is still sitting on the bed.
Besok kami akan bangun sebelum matahari terbit.
Tomorrow we will wake up before sunrise.
English changes wake to wakes or woke. Indonesian keeps bangun unchanged; time and viewpoint come from separate words and the context.
Bangun: wake, be awake, or get up
In everyday speech, bangun can cover becoming awake and rising from bed. The frequent expression bangun tidur makes the transition out of sleep explicit, while bangun dari kursi means get up from a chair.
Aku baru bangun tidur ketika kamu menelepon.
I had just woken up when you called. (informal)
Anak itu bangun karena mendengar suara pintu.
The child woke up after hearing the sound of the door.
Nenek bangun dari kursinya untuk menyambut tamu.
Grandmother got up from her chair to welcome the guest.
Jam lima pagi, seluruh rumah sudah bangun.
At five in the morning, everyone in the house was already awake.
Sedang bangun is possible when the act of getting up is genuinely in progress, but it does not normally mean simply “be awake.” Use sudah bangun for the achieved state and masih bangun for “still awake.”
Kamu masih bangun? Saya perlu menanyakan satu hal.
Are you still awake? I need to ask you something. (everyday)
Kesiangan means waking or starting the day later than appropriate, not simply “wake.”
Saya kesiangan karena lupa memasang alarm.
I overslept because I forgot to set an alarm.
Membangunkan: cause someone to wake or rise
The waking branch becomes transitive with membangunkan. The waker is subject and the person woken is direct object.
Ibu membangunkan saya pukul setengah enam.
Mother woke me at half past five.
Tolong jangan membangunkan bayi yang baru tidur.
Please do not wake the baby who has just gone to sleep.
Suara petir membangunkan seluruh penghuni rumah.
The sound of thunder woke everyone in the house.
Petugas membangunkan penumpang sebelum kereta tiba di tujuan akhir.
The attendant woke the passengers before the train reached its final destination.
The causer need not intend the result: thunder can membangunkan people. Abstract membangunkan semangat “awaken enthusiasm” occurs, but membangkitkan semangat is the more established neutral collocation. This is another place where the nearest English phrase does not license free substitution.
Berita kemenangan itu membangkitkan semangat para relawan.
News of the victory lifted the volunteers' spirits.
The passive is dibangunkan:
Saya dibangunkan alarm pada pukul empat pagi.
I was woken by the alarm at four in the morning.
Membangun: build, establish, or develop
Membangun is a transitive actor-voice verb meaning build, establish, or develop. Its direct object may be a physical structure, an institution, a relationship, a capacity, or an abstract resource such as trust.
Mereka membangun rumah kecil di tepi kebun.
They are building a small house at the edge of the garden.
Warga membangun jembatan darurat setelah banjir.
Residents built an emergency bridge after the flood.
Tim baru itu perlu membangun kepercayaan dengan masyarakat setempat.
The new team needs to build trust with the local community.
Perusahaan sedang membangun jaringan distribusi di Indonesia timur.
The company is developing a distribution network in eastern Indonesia. (formal)
Mereka membangun kebiasaan membaca bersama sebelum tidur.
They are building a habit of reading together before bed.
These extensions share the idea of bringing an organized result into existence, but their collocations are lexical. A house is physically erected; trust and habits are gradually established. Do not infer that membangun is the prefixed present tense of waking bangun.
Dibangun: the built entity as topic
Dibangun centers the thing established or constructed. The builder may follow directly, occur after oleh, or remain unexpressed.
Jembatan itu dibangun warga dalam waktu dua minggu.
The bridge was built by residents in two weeks.
Sekolah baru sedang dibangun di dekat terminal.
A new school is being built near the bus terminal.
Sistem tersebut dibangun berdasarkan kebutuhan pengguna.
The system was developed based on user needs. (formal)
Kepercayaan tidak dapat dibangun dalam satu malam.
Trust cannot be built in one night.
Passive di- is attached in dibangun; locative di dekat terminal remains separate. Aspect and modality are also separate: sedang dibangun, telah dibangun, dapat dibangun.
The general information-structure choice between actor and patient viewpoints belongs in the di- passive overview.
Bangunan: the structure or constructed result
Bangunan is a noun for something built, especially a physical structure. It names the resulting object, not the activity of constructing it.
Bangunan tua itu akan diubah menjadi perpustakaan.
That old building will be converted into a library.
Tidak ada bangunan tinggi di sekitar bandara.
There are no tall buildings around the airport.
Arsitek memeriksa kondisi bangunan setelah gempa.
The architect inspected the condition of the building after the earthquake.
It can also mean a structure in a wider technical sense, but the physical result remains central. General -an can form many kinds of associated nouns; the precise meaning of bangunan is conventional.
Pembangunan: construction or organized development
Pembangunan packages the process, program, or broad activity of building and developing. It is very common in administration, policy, economics, and planning (formal).
Pembangunan kota harus mempertimbangkan ruang hijau dan transportasi umum.
Urban development must consider green space and public transport. (formal)
Pembangunan rumah sakit itu dijadwalkan selesai tahun depan.
Construction of the hospital is scheduled for completion next year. (formal)
Pemerintah daerah memprioritaskan pembangunan jalan di desa terpencil.
The regional government prioritizes road development in remote villages. (formal)
Warga meminta agar pembangunan pusat perbelanjaan tidak merusak kawasan bersejarah.
Residents asked that construction of the shopping center not damage the historic district. (formal)
Compare the result and process:
Bangunan itu sudah selesai, tetapi pembangunan taman di sekitarnya masih berlangsung.
The building is finished, but development of the surrounding park is still underway.
Bangunan is the structure; pembangunan is the building or development process. In ordinary conversation about a small project, speakers may prefer pembangunan rumah or a finite clause sedang membangun rumah, depending on whether the activity is being packaged as a noun.
Common Mistakes
1. Using membangun to wake a person
❌ Tolong membangun saya pukul enam.
Incorrect — membangun means build or develop, not wake someone.
✅ Tolong bangunkan saya pukul enam.
Please wake me at six.
The command normally drops actor prefix meN-, giving bangunkan; in a declarative clause use membangunkan.
2. Using bare bangun for a construction object
❌ Mereka bangun rumah baru di desa.
Nonstandard in careful Indonesian for an actor-oriented declarative clause.
✅ Mereka membangun rumah baru di desa.
They are building a new house in the village.
Bare bangun rumah occurs in casual varieties (informal), but full membangun is the safe standard choice in careful speech and writing.
3. Confusing the result noun and the process noun
❌ Pembangunan tua itu memiliki jendela kayu.
Incorrect — a physical structure is bangunan, not the process noun pembangunan.
✅ Bangunan tua itu memiliki jendela kayu.
That old building has wooden windows.
4. Splitting passive di-
❌ Jalan baru sedang di bangun di belakang pasar.
Incorrect spelling — passive di- attaches to the verb.
✅ Jalan baru sedang dibangun di belakang pasar.
A new road is being built behind the market.
5. Adding an English tense ending
❌ Kemarin saya banguned pukul sembilan.
Incorrect — bangun takes no past-tense ending.
✅ Kemarin saya bangun pukul sembilan.
Yesterday I woke up at nine.
Key Takeaways
- Waking bangun is intransitive; membangunkan introduces a causer and a person woken.
- Construction membangun takes what is built or developed as its object; dibangun centers that patient.
- Bangunan names a built structure, while pembangunan names a process, program, or development activity.
- The two semantic branches are lexicalized. Never choose membangun merely because English uses wake up with an active subject.
- All actual derivatives are solid; time, aspect, modality, and locative di remain separate.
