The duduk family begins with bodily posture and extends into occupancy, office, rank, and social status. Bare duduk is intransitive “sit/be seated”; menduduki takes a place or position as its object; mendudukkan causes someone to sit or assigns something its proper position. The nouns kedudukan and penduduk are established lexical members, not forms that can be translated by adding one fixed English suffix.
These words do not inflect for person or tense. Duduk is a complete usable predicate, not an infinitive meaning “to sit”; never add English -s or -ed. General affix formation belongs to Word Formation; here the goal is to learn each complete word with its arguments and collocations.

English changes sit to sat or adds will be sitting. Indonesian keeps duduk and lets sedang, besok, or discourse supply the temporal viewpoint.
Duduk: posture and location
Duduk takes the seated person as subject and normally introduces the seat or location with di.
Silakan duduk; dokter akan menemui Anda sebentar lagi.
Please have a seat; the doctor will see you shortly.
Anak itu duduk di lantai karena semua kursi terisi.
The child sat on the floor because all the chairs were occupied.
Saya duduk di sebelah Rani saat makan malam.
I sat next to Rani at dinner.
Jangan duduk terlalu dekat dengan layar.
Do not sit too close to the screen.
Duduk does not take the chair as a direct object. Compare duduk di kursi “sit on a chair” with transitive menduduki kursi, which profiles occupancy and often sounds official, competitive, or contrastive.
Posture can combine with manner and orientation:
Para peserta duduk melingkar agar mudah berdiskusi.
The participants sat in a circle so they could discuss easily.
Dia duduk menghadap pintu masuk.
He/She sat facing the entrance.
Nenek masih duduk tegak meskipun perjalanan cukup lama.
Grandma was still sitting upright although the journey was quite long.
Menduduki: occupy a place, rank, or office
Menduduki is transitive. Its object is the location, territory, rank, seat, or institutional position occupied.
Seorang penumpang sudah menduduki kursi yang tertera di tiket saya.
A passenger was already occupying the seat shown on my ticket.
Pasukan itu menduduki gedung pemerintahan selama dua hari.
The troops occupied the government building for two days.
Ia menduduki jabatan direktur operasional sejak tahun lalu.
He/She has held the position of operations director since last year.
Klub tersebut menduduki peringkat kedua klasemen sementara.
The club occupies second place in the provisional standings.
The physical relationship “body on seat” broadens into control of territory and occupancy of an abstract slot. Menduduki jabatan and menduduki peringkat are standard formal collocations (formal).
The theme-oriented form is diduduki, written solid:
Kursi di ujung meja sudah diduduki oleh ketua panitia.
The chair at the end of the table is already occupied by the committee chair.
Posisi itu pernah diduduki beberapa tokoh senior.
That position was once held by several senior figures.
Passive diduduki is one word, while locative di kursi is two. For the general object and voice pattern, see the -i voice overview.
Mendudukkan: cause to sit or put in a position
Mendudukkan selects the person or issue being placed as its object. A following location commonly uses di, pada, or another complement.
Ayah mendudukkan adik di kursi belakang mobil.
Dad seated my younger sibling in the back seat of the car.
Petugas mendudukkan para undangan di meja yang sesuai dengan nomor pada kartu mereka.
The attendant seated the invited guests at the tables matching the numbers on their cards.

Let us place this issue in its proper context. (formal)

The first uses are transparent causatives: someone causes another person to be seated. The abstract use “place in proper perspective/status” is established and belongs mainly to careful formal prose (formal).
Anak-anak didudukkan di baris depan oleh guru.
The children were seated in the front row by the teacher.
Again, didudukkan is the attached passive form; di baris depan is a separate location phrase.
Kedudukan: position, status, and standing
Kedudukan packages an occupied place or recognized status as a noun.
Kedudukan hukum kedua pihak harus dijelaskan dalam kontrak.
The legal standing of both parties must be explained in the contract. (formal)
Ia menggunakan kedudukannya untuk membantu warga memperoleh layanan.
They used their position to help residents obtain services.
Dalam bagan organisasi, kedudukan unit ini tepat di bawah direktur.
In the organizational chart, this unit's position is directly below the director. (formal)

They have equal standing before the law. (formal)
English may use position, status, standing, or place. The exact collocation determines the translation. Kedudukan is not normally the physical act of sitting.
Penduduk: inhabitants, not “sitters”
Penduduk means the people who inhabit a place. This is a lexicalized social noun; it does not mean everyone currently seated.
Penduduk kota itu menggunakan kereta untuk bepergian ke tempat kerja.
The city's residents use the train to travel to work.
Sebagian besar penduduk desa bekerja di sektor pertanian.
Most of the village's inhabitants work in agriculture.
Jumlah penduduk terus bertambah setiap tahun.
The population continues to grow every year.
Pemerintah meminta penduduk setempat menjauhi daerah rawan longsor.
The government asked local residents to stay away from landslide-prone areas.
The semantic bridge is stable occupancy of a place, not seated posture. Related demographic terms such as kependudukan are formal and must also be learned lexically (formal).
Idioms and conventional combinations

Common Mistakes
Giving intransitive duduk a direct seat object
❌ Saya duduk kursi dekat pintu.
Incorrect — the physical seat is introduced with locative di.
✅ Saya duduk di kursi dekat pintu agar mudah keluar.
I sat in the chair near the door so I could leave easily.
Using menduduki for an ordinary posture instruction
❌ Silakan menduduki sebentar.
Incorrect valency — menduduki needs an occupied object and is not the ordinary invitation to sit.
✅ Silakan duduk sebentar sambil menunggu nama Anda dipanggil.
Please sit for a moment while waiting for your name to be called.
Reading penduduk as anyone sitting down
❌ Semua penduduk di ruang tunggu berdiri ketika pintu dibuka.
Wrong word for the intended 'seated people' — penduduk means inhabitants/residents.
✅ Semua orang yang duduk di ruang tunggu berdiri ketika pintu dibuka.
Everyone sitting in the waiting room stood when the door opened.
Omitting the caused person after mendudukkan
❌ Petugas mendudukkan di baris pertama.
Incorrect — mendudukkan requires the person or thing being placed as its object.
✅ Petugas mendudukkan tamu lansia di baris pertama.
The attendant seated the elderly guest in the first row.
Separating passive di-
❌ Jabatan itu di duduki orang yang sama selama sepuluh tahun.
Incorrect spelling — passive diduduki is one word.
✅ Jabatan itu diduduki orang yang sama selama sepuluh tahun.
That position was held by the same person for ten years.
