The berdiri family connects upright posture with things made to stand: buildings are erected, organizations are founded, founders become pendiri, and a settled intellectual or moral stance becomes pendirian. Those extensions are systematic enough to aid memory, but the modern words have distinct valency and collocations.
The ordinary posture verb is the complete word berdiri, not an Indonesian infinitive. It remains unchanged across persons and time; general rules for ber-, -kan, and peN- belong to Word Formation.

I stood near the door because the bus was full.
Mereka masih berdiri meskipun acara sudah selesai.
They were still standing even though the event had ended.
Besok para peserta berdiri sesuai kelompok masing-masing.
Tomorrow the participants will stand according to their respective groups.
English changes stand to stood and adds future auxiliaries. Indonesian keeps berdiri; aspect words and time expressions remain separate.
Berdiri: stand, stand up, and remain standing
Berdiri is intransitive. The standing participant is the subject, and the place normally follows as a di phrase.
Semua tamu berdiri ketika lagu kebangsaan mulai diputar.
All the guests stood when the national anthem began to play.
Silakan berdiri di belakang garis kuning.
Please stand behind the yellow line.
Dia berdiri dari kursinya untuk menyambut tamu.
He/She stood up from the chair to welcome the guest.
Petugas itu berdiri tegak di depan pintu masuk.
The officer stood upright in front of the entrance.
With a static location, berdiri means βbe standing.β A source such as dari kursinya makes the transition βstand upβ clear. Indonesian does not need a separate conjugated form for the transition.
Buildings and other upright structures can also be subjects:
Rumah kayu itu masih berdiri setelah puluhan tahun.
That wooden house is still standing after decades.
Sebuah menara tua berdiri di tengah kawasan pelabuhan.
An old tower stands in the middle of the harbor district.
This stative use prepares the metaphorical link to erecting and founding.
Berdiri sendiri: independence and separate status
Berdiri sendiri can be physical, grammatical, economic, or institutional: something stands without support or functions independently.
Rak kecil itu bisa berdiri sendiri tanpa dipasang ke dinding.
That small shelf can stand on its own without being attached to the wall.
Sejak tahun lalu, unit tersebut berdiri sendiri sebagai lembaga dengan anggaran terpisah.
Since last year, that unit has operated independently as an institution with a separate budget. (formal)
Anak-anak perlu belajar berdiri di atas kaki sendiri.
Children need to learn to stand on their own feet.
The last expression conventionally means becoming self-reliant as well as physically standing.
Mendirikan: erect or found
Mendirikan is transitive. Its object is what the actor erects, establishes, or founds.
Warga mendirikan tenda darurat di lapangan.
Residents erected emergency tents on the field.
Yayasan itu mendirikan sekolah untuk anak-anak di daerah terpencil.
The foundation established a school for children in remote areas.
Mereka mendirikan perusahaan teknologi setelah lulus kuliah.
They founded a technology company after graduating from university.
Panitia mendirikan panggung sehari sebelum festival.
The committee put up the stage one day before the festival.
With physical objects, the result stands upright or in place. With institutions, βstandingβ becomes continued social existence. Mendirikan sekolah can mean founding the institution or constructing the school; context such as curriculum, legal registration, land, or building work resolves the reading.
The passive is didirikan, one word:
Sekolah itu didirikan oleh para pedagang setempat pada tahun 1952.
The school was founded by local merchants in 1952.
Tenda-tenda didirikan di halaman rumah sakit setelah gempa.
Tents were erected in the hospital courtyard after the earthquake.
Perusahaan tersebut didirikan untuk mengembangkan energi terbarukan.
The company was established to develop renewable energy. (formal)
Passive didirikan is attached; location di halaman is separate. See the -kan voice overview for the general causative pattern.
Pendiri: the founder
Pendiri names a person or party that founds an organization, movement, institution, or enduring initiative.
Pendiri perusahaan itu masih terlibat dalam pengembangan produk.
The company's founder is still involved in product development.
Ia dikenal sebagai salah satu pendiri organisasi tersebut.
He/She is known as one of that organization's founders.
Para pendiri sekolah sepakat menyediakan beasiswa bagi siswa setempat.
The school's founders agreed to provide scholarships for local students.
Pendiri does not mean a person who happens to be standing. It names the initiator of an established entity and is lexicalized around the institutional reading of mendirikan.
Pendirian: establishment and stance
Pendirian has two major modern readings. It can name the act or process of establishing something, or a person's settled position of belief.
Pendirian koperasi itu membutuhkan persetujuan para anggota.
The establishment of that cooperative requires the members' approval. (formal)
Biaya pendirian perusahaan sudah dimasukkan ke dalam anggaran.
The cost of establishing the company has been included in the budget. (formal)
Pendirian saya tidak berubah meskipun saya mendapat banyak tekanan.
My position did not change despite considerable pressure.
Ia teguh pada pendiriannya untuk tidak menerima hadiah tersebut.
He/She stood firm in the position of not accepting the gift.
Kami menghormati pendirian setiap orang dalam masalah ini.
We respect everyone's stance on this issue.
The metaphor is a position one βstands on.β For everyday opinions, pendapat saya βmy opinionβ is broader and less firm. Pendirian saya suggests a settled principle or stance and is common in careful discussion (formal).
Berdiri versus bangun
English get up covers several Indonesian events. Use berdiri for moving into a standing posture; bangun commonly means wake up or get out of bed.
Saya berdiri ketika nama saya dipanggil.
I stood up when my name was called.
Saya bangun pukul enam lalu langsung mandi.
I got up/woke up at six and immediately took a shower.
Setelah jatuh, dia perlahan-lahan berdiri lagi.
After falling, he/she slowly stood up again.
The choice follows the event, not the nearest English phrase.
Common Mistakes
Giving berdiri a founded institution as direct object
β Mereka berdiri sekolah baru di desa itu.
Incorrect β intransitive berdiri cannot take the school as an object.
β Mereka mendirikan sekolah baru di desa itu.
They established a new school in that village.
Using mendirikan for standing up
β Dia mendirikan dari kursi ketika saya masuk.
Incorrect β mendirikan needs something caused to stand; the person simply stands up.
β Dia berdiri dari kursi ketika saya masuk.
He/She stood up from the chair when I entered.
Reading pendiri as a standing person
β Pendiri di depan pintu diminta duduk.
Wrong word for the intended 'person standing' β pendiri means founder.
β Orang yang berdiri di depan pintu diminta duduk.
The person standing by the door was asked to sit.
Treating pendirian as any passing opinion
β Pendirian saya hari ini mungkin kopi, mungkin teh.
Wrong lexical choice β pendirian is a settled stance, not a momentary preference.
β Pilihan saya hari ini mungkin kopi, mungkin teh.
My choice today may be coffee or tea.
Separating passive di-
β Gedung itu di dirikan di atas tanah milik desa.
Incorrect spelling β passive didirikan is one word.
β Gedung itu didirikan di atas tanah milik desa.
The building was erected on village-owned land.
