English compresses employment, activity, and task performance into work. Indonesian usually keeps them apart. Bekerja means engage in work, normally without an affected object; mengerjakan directs activity toward a task; pekerjaan is work, a task, or a job; pekerja is the person who works; and mempekerjakan means employ or put someone to work.
That division is morphological but also lexical: you cannot choose a form merely by translating the nearest English word. This page treats the established family and its clause patterns. General formation is covered elsewhere, while the ber- argument guide explains why activity predicates such as bekerja do not behave like ordinary transitive actor-voice verbs.
No person or tense paradigm
Standard bekerja is invariant. It receives no ending for the subject and no past or future ending.
| Frame | Indonesian | Where the information appears |
|---|---|---|
| first person | Saya bekerja di toko itu. | saya |
| third person | Dia bekerja di toko itu. | dia; same verb |
| plural | Mereka bekerja di toko itu. | mereka; same verb |
| past period | Dulu saya bekerja di sana. | separate dulu |
| ongoing | Dia sedang bekerja. | separate sedang |
| future | Kami akan bekerja besok. | separate akan |
Dulu paman saya bekerja di pelabuhan.
My uncle used to work at the port.
Tolong jangan menelepon dulu; Mira sedang bekerja.
Please don't call yet; Mira is working.
Besok tim kami akan bekerja dari kantor cabang.
Tomorrow our team will work from the branch office.
Kerja is not an infinitive. It is a noun or modifier in compounds and a common clipped predicate (informal). Bekerja is the neutral standard predicate.
Bekerja: engage in work
Bekerja presents work as the subject's activity. It commonly combines with di for workplace, sebagai for role, untuk for employer or purpose, and adverbials of schedule or manner. These are not direct affected objects.
Lina bekerja di klinik gigi dekat stasiun.
Lina works at a dental clinic near the station.
Kakaknya bekerja sebagai teknisi jaringan.
His/Her older sibling works as a network technician.
Saya bekerja untuk organisasi yang membantu petani kecil.
I work for an organization that helps small farmers.
Mereka bekerja dengan tenang meskipun listrik sempat padam.
They worked calmly even though the power went out briefly.
Rudi bekerja keras agar tokonya bisa buka tepat waktu.
Rudi worked hard so that his shop could open on time.
A following workplace is introduced by di, and a role by sebagai. A task cannot normally follow as a bare direct object: use mengerjakan laporan, not bekerja laporan. Most bekerja clauses consequently lack a normal di- passive.
Mengerjakan: act on a task
Mengerjakan is transitive. Its direct object is the assignment, problem, project, repair, or other bounded task being worked on. The verb may imply doing, carrying out, or working through the object; completion still depends on context.
Anak-anak mengerjakan tugas kelompok di perpustakaan.
The children are doing their group assignment in the library.
Saya belum selesai mengerjakan laporan perjalanan.
I have not finished working on the travel report.
Teknisi sedang mengerjakan perbaikan lift lantai dua.
The technician is carrying out repairs to the second-floor elevator.
Cobalah mengerjakan soal yang paling mudah terlebih dahulu.
Try doing the easiest problem first.
The contrast is structural as well as semantic:
Banu bekerja sampai larut malam minggu ini.
Banu is working until late at night this week.
Banu mengerjakan proposal sampai larut malam minggu ini.
Banu is working on the proposal until late at night this week.
In the second clause, proposal is an affected task and can become a passive subject. Dikerjakan is written solid because di- is a passive prefix.
Proposal itu dikerjakan tiga orang dalam waktu dua hari.
The proposal was worked on by three people over two days.
Bagian yang paling rumit sudah dikerjakan oleh tim hukum.
The most complicated section has already been handled by the legal team.
Kerja: noun, modifier, and informal predicate
As a noun, kerja denotes work or working and appears in many fixed compounds: jam kerja “working hours,” tenaga kerja “labor force,” tempat kerja “workplace,” and kerja sama “cooperation.” As a predicate, it is common in relaxed speech (informal) but is usually expanded to bekerja in careful prose.
Jam kerja kantor layanan itu berakhir pukul empat.
The service office's working hours end at four.
Perusahaan menyediakan bus menuju tempat kerja.
The company provides a bus to the workplace.
Aku kerja dari rumah hari ini.
I'm working from home today. (informal)
Kita perlu bekerja sama agar acara ini tidak terlambat.
We need to work together so that this event does not run late.
Notice the orthographic and category contrast: noun kerja sama is two words, while verb phrase bekerja sama contains the full predicate.
Pekerjaan: task, work, or job
Pekerjaan packages work as a thing that can be assigned, sought, completed, or described. Context determines whether it means a particular task, one's occupation, employment, or work in general.
Saya masih punya dua pekerjaan yang harus selesai hari ini.
I still have two tasks that must be finished today.
Setelah lulus, Sari mendapat pekerjaan di perusahaan penerbitan.
After graduating, Sari got a job at a publishing company.
Pekerjaan barunya menuntut banyak perjalanan ke luar kota.
His/Her new job requires a lot of travel out of town.
Tono membagi pekerjaan rumah dengan pasangannya.
Tono shares the housework with his partner.
Pekerjaan rumah can mean housework or school homework; the situation disambiguates it. In a classroom, Guru memberi pekerjaan rumah is homework. In a household discussion, membagi pekerjaan rumah is dividing domestic chores.
Pekerja and mempekerjakan
Pekerja names a worker as a participant or social category. It is broader than pegawai “staff member/civil servant depending context” or karyawan “employee,” since a pekerja need not hold a conventional salaried office job.
Para pekerja proyek mengenakan helm dan rompi pemantul cahaya.
The project workers wear helmets and reflective vests.
Koperasi itu memberi pelatihan kepada pekerja musiman.
The cooperative provides training to seasonal workers.
Mempekerjakan is a transitive verb whose direct object is the person employed or put to work. The employer is the actor. The established spelling is mempekerjakan, not memperkerjakan: this lexical family has pe- after mem-, without r.
Hotel baru itu mempekerjakan warga dari desa sekitar.
The new hotel employs residents from the surrounding villages.
Kami mempekerjakan seorang editor lepas untuk proyek tersebut.
We employed a freelance editor for that project.
Perusahaan tidak boleh mempekerjakan anak di bawah umur.
A company may not employ underage children.
Dua penerjemah dipekerjakan selama konferensi berlangsung.
Two interpreters were employed for the duration of the conference.
Mempekerjakan does not mean that the employer personally performs the employee's task. It creates or maintains an employment/work relation. The passive dipekerjakan centers the worker.
Lexical choices and useful collocations
Some combinations are conventional and must be learned whole. Kerja keras can be a noun phrase, while bekerja keras is a predicate. Mencari kerja (informal) and mencari pekerjaan are both used for seeking employment; the latter is more neutral in careful writing. Pengerjaan, a related formal noun, focuses specifically on carrying out a task or project and should not replace general pekerjaan.
Pengerjaan jembatan dihentikan sementara karena banjir.
Work on the bridge was temporarily halted because of flooding. (formal)
Dia sedang mencari pekerjaan yang lokasinya lebih dekat dengan rumah.
He/She is looking for a job whose location is closer to home.
Common Mistakes
1. Giving bekerja a direct task object
❌ Saya bekerja tugas matematika setelah makan malam.
Incorrect — bekerja does not take the affected task directly.
✅ Saya mengerjakan tugas matematika setelah makan malam.
I do my mathematics assignment after dinner.
2. Using mengerjakan for a workplace
❌ Ibu saya mengerjakan di sebuah apotek.
Incorrect — a workplace combines with bekerja di.
✅ Ibu saya bekerja di sebuah apotek.
My mother works at a pharmacy.
3. Inserting r into mempekerjakan
❌ Toko itu memperkerjakan enam pegawai baru.
Incorrect established form — this family uses mempekerjakan.
✅ Toko itu mempekerjakan enam pegawai baru.
The shop employs six new staff members.
4. Splitting passive di-
❌ Pesanan besar itu di kerjakan lebih dahulu.
Incorrect spelling — passive di- attaches to kerjakan.
✅ Pesanan besar itu dikerjakan lebih dahulu.
The large order was handled first.
5. Confusing the person with the job
❌ Rina mencari pekerja baru setelah pindah kota.
Wrong meaning if Rina is seeking employment — pekerja means a worker.
✅ Rina mencari pekerjaan baru setelah pindah kota.
Rina is looking for a new job after moving cities.
Key Takeaways
- Bekerja is an invariant activity predicate; kerja is also a noun and an informal clipped predicate.
- Mengerjakan selects an affected task, which can become the subject of dikerjakan.
- Pekerjaan is work, a task, or a job; pekerja is the person doing work.
- Mempekerjakan means employ someone and has no r after mempe-.
- Aspect words remain separate, passive di- remains attached, and English work does not determine the Indonesian derivative.
