Belajar and mempelajari may both translate as study or learn, but they organize the scene differently. Belajar centers the learner's activity and can name a subject or skill as a lexical complement. Mempelajari is transitive: it presents a topic, document, or phenomenon as the object examined or learned. Around them stands a rich pedagogical family: pelajar, pelajaran, pembelajaran, and pengajaran.
The form belajar is itself historically and synchronically exceptional within the ber- family: standard Indonesian has belajar, never berajar. The other members are also established lexical items whose precise meanings cannot be generated from English glosses alone.
No person or tense paradigm
Belajar does not conjugate. Subject pronouns and separate aspect or time expressions supply the distinctions that English often puts into the verb.
| Frame | Indonesian | Where the information appears |
|---|---|---|
| first person | Saya belajar bahasa Arab. | saya |
| third person | Dia belajar bahasa Arab. | dia; same verb |
| plural | Mereka belajar bahasa Arab. | mereka; same verb |
| completed period | Kami sudah belajar. | separate sudah |
| ongoing | Kami sedang belajar. | separate sedang |
| future plan | Kami akan belajar. | separate akan |
Saya belajar bahasa Arab melalui kelas daring.
I study Arabic through an online class.
Tadi malam Dimas belajar sampai hampir tengah malam.
Last night Dimas studied until almost midnight.
Liburan nanti kami akan belajar menyelam di Bunaken.
During the next vacation we will learn to dive in Bunaken.
There is no infinitive marker in these forms, nor endings corresponding to studies, studied, or will study. Sudah belajar and akan belajar remain two words.
Belajar: the learner and the activity
Belajar presents the subject as engaging in learning, studying, or practice. It can occur alone or with a field, language, school subject, or skill. Although the following noun resembles an English object, it is a lexically licensed complement rather than an ordinary affected object.
Adik sedang belajar di kamar karena besok ada ujian.
My younger sibling is studying in the bedroom because there is a test tomorrow.
Kami belajar sejarah Asia Tenggara semester ini.
We are studying Southeast Asian history this semester.
Nisa belajar menjahit dari tetangganya.
Nisa is learning to sew from her neighbor.
Saya belajar mengucapkan nama itu dengan benar.
I am learning to pronounce that name correctly.
Anak-anak belajar sambil bermain di halaman.
The children learn while playing in the yard.
Source and method are introduced separately: belajar dari pengalaman/guru means learn from a source, belajar dengan teman gives a companion, and belajar melalui praktik gives a route or method.
Kami banyak belajar dari kesalahan pada proyek pertama.
We learned a lot from the mistakes on the first project.
Rafi lebih suka belajar dengan teman daripada sendirian.
Rafi prefers studying with friends to studying alone.
The subject matter after belajar cannot normally become a passive subject. Indonesian does not form sejarah dibelajar siswa. To make the material a full affected object, use mempelajari and its passive dipelajari.
Mempelajari: make the material the object
Mempelajari is a transitive verb. It highlights the item investigated, mastered, reviewed, or studied carefully. It is common in education, professional work, research, and careful everyday speech; it is not merely a formal decoration of belajar.
Mahasiswa itu mempelajari sejarah perdagangan rempah.
The university student studies the history of the spice trade.
Sebelum menandatangani kontrak, kami mempelajari semua ketentuannya.
Before signing the contract, we studied all of its terms.
Tim medis sedang mempelajari pola penyebaran penyakit tersebut.
The medical team is studying the pattern by which the disease spreads.
Saya ingin mempelajari cara kerja mesin ini lebih dahulu.
I want to study how this machine works first.
Compare the discourse focus:
Tari belajar bahasa isyarat setiap Sabtu.
Tari studies sign language every Saturday.
Tari mempelajari struktur bahasa isyarat untuk penelitiannya.
Tari studies the structure of sign language for her research.
The first centers Tari's learning activity; the second construes struktur bahasa isyarat as an object of systematic study. Mempelajari directly takes its object, so mempelajari tentang sejarah is usually needlessly mixed. Use mempelajari sejarah or belajar tentang sejarah, according to the intended structure.
Dipelajari: center what is learned or examined
The passive dipelajari makes the material the clause topic. The learner may follow directly, appear after oleh, or remain unexpressed.
Dokumen itu dipelajari tim hukum sebelum rapat dimulai.
The document was studied by the legal team before the meeting began.
Pola tersebut sudah lama dipelajari oleh para ahli bahasa.
That pattern has long been studied by linguists.
Kosakata baru sebaiknya dipelajari dalam konteks kalimat.
New vocabulary is best learned in sentence context.
Passive di- is attached in dipelajari; locative di remains separate in di kelas. The spelling di pelajari incorrectly treats a voice prefix as a place word.
Pelajar and pelajaran
Pelajar names a student or learner, especially a school pupil or a member of the student population. In Indonesian educational usage, a university student is normally mahasiswa/mahasiswi, not simply pelajar, though broad contexts can group all learners together.
Ratusan pelajar mengikuti lomba sains tingkat kota.
Hundreds of school students took part in the city-level science competition.
Program itu membantu pelajar asing beradaptasi di sekolah baru.
The program helps foreign students adapt to a new school.
Pelajaran can mean a school subject, an individual lesson, teaching material, or a lesson learned from experience. It is not the same as the learning process.
Pelajaran pertama semester ini adalah matematika dasar.
The first class this semester is basic mathematics.
Guru menyiapkan pelajaran tentang perubahan iklim.
The teacher prepared a lesson on climate change.
Kegagalan itu memberi kami pelajaran penting tentang kesabaran.
That failure taught us an important lesson about patience.
These meanings are lexicalized. Pelajaran hidup is a life lesson, whereas pelajar hidup would describe a learner who is alive, not the intended concept.
Pembelajaran and pengajaran
Both nouns are frequent in educational writing (formal/academic), but they profile different sides of pedagogy. Pembelajaran centers the learning or instructional process, often including learners, activities, materials, and outcomes. Pengajaran centers teaching or the provision and method of instruction.
Pembelajaran menjadi lebih aktif ketika siswa terlibat dalam diskusi.
Learning becomes more active when students take part in discussions. (academic)
Platform itu dirancang untuk mendukung pembelajaran mandiri.
The platform is designed to support independent learning. (formal)
Metode pengajaran guru tersebut mudah diikuti oleh pemula.
That teacher's teaching method is easy for beginners to follow. (formal)
Pengajaran bahasa di sekolah itu menekankan penggunaan bahasa dalam situasi nyata.
Language teaching at that school emphasizes language use in real-life situations. (academic)
The boundary is not absolute: institutions sometimes use pembelajaran broadly for the whole teaching-and-learning event. Still, the learner/process versus teacher/instruction distinction is a reliable interpretive starting point. For how the related teaching verbs assign learner and content roles, see the ajar family.
Common Mistakes
1. Regularizing the exceptional bel- form
β Mereka berajar bersama setiap Jumat sore.
Incorrect β standard Indonesian uses the irregular established form belajar.
β Mereka belajar bersama setiap Jumat sore.
They study together every Friday afternoon.
2. Building a passive directly from belajar
β Bab terakhir dibelajar para peserta pagi ini.
Incorrect β the complement of belajar does not form this passive.
β Bab terakhir dipelajari para peserta pagi ini.
The final chapter was studied by the participants this morning.
3. Adding tentang after transitive mempelajari
β Kami mempelajari tentang sejarah kampung itu.
Mixed structure β mempelajari takes its topic as a direct object.
β Kami mempelajari sejarah kampung itu.
We study the history of that village.
4. Confusing the lesson with the process
β Proses pelajaran jarak jauh memerlukan akses internet stabil.
Wrong noun for the designed learning process.
β Proses pembelajaran jarak jauh memerlukan akses internet stabil.
The distance-learning process requires stable internet access. (formal)
5. Splitting passive di-
β Masalah itu sedang di pelajari oleh tim khusus.
Incorrect spelling β passive di- attaches to pelajari.
β Masalah itu sedang dipelajari oleh tim khusus.
The issue is being studied by a special team.
