The kenal family grows from recognition and familiarity into acquaintance, reputation, and introduction. Bare kenal and full mengenal relate an experiencer to a person, place, work, or recognizable domain. Dikenal and terkenal shift attention to reputation, while memperkenalkan creates a new acquaintance or presents something to an audience. Perkenalan packages that event or relationship as a noun.
English uses know for both facts and people. Indonesian draws a practical line: tahu normally handles information, while kenal/mengenal handles acquaintance or familiarity. This page treats the established lexical family; general affix formation belongs on the Word Formation pages.
No person or tense paradigm
Kenal does not mean “infinitive to know.” It is an invariant predicate, and its form never changes for the experiencer or time.
| Frame | Indonesian | What supplies the interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| first person | Saya kenal dia. | saya; no agreement |
| third person | Rina kenal dia. | Rina; same predicate |
| plural | Mereka kenal dia. | mereka; same predicate |
| past relationship | Dulu saya sudah kenal dia. | dulu and sudah |
| present gap | Saya belum kenal dia. | belum |
| future acquaintance | Nanti kamu akan kenal dia. | nanti and akan |
Saya kenal dia melalui teman kuliah.
I know him/her through a university friend.
We do not know the neighbor who just moved in yet.
Setelah bekerja bersama, kamu akan kenal sifatnya.
After working together, you will get to know his/her character.
There are no forms corresponding to English knows or knew. Sudah, belum, and akan remain separate from kenal.
Kenal: everyday acquaintance and familiarity
Bare kenal commonly takes a person directly. Kenal dengan + person also occurs, especially when the relationship itself is being introduced, but the direct pattern is compact and extremely frequent.
Do you know the woman sitting near the door?
Saya kenal baik pemilik toko tersebut.
I know the owner of that shop well.
Dia kenal dengan keluarga kami sejak lama.
He/She has known our family for a long time.
In this small town, almost everyone knows one another.
The object need not be human. A person can be familiar with a place, style, organization, or recurring situation.
I know that area fairly well because I once lived there.
Pembaca lama pasti kenal gaya tulisan wartawan tersebut.
Long-time readers will surely recognize that journalist's writing style.
This is familiarity built through contact or recognition, not merely possession of a fact. Compare:
I know the address, but I do not know the owner of that house.
Mengenal: full actor-oriented familiarity
Mengenal is the full meN- family member. It takes a direct object and is common in careful speech, profiles, explanations, and formal prose. Beside everyday kenal, it gives the experiencer–object relation more explicit verbal framing.
I began to become familiar with that author's work while still at school.
Local residents know every small road in that area.
Untuk memahami keputusannya, kita perlu mengenal latar belakang keluarganya.
To understand the decision, we need to know the family background.
Generasi muda perlu mengenal sejarah kotanya sendiri.
Young people need to become familiar with their own city's history. (formal)
Mengenal does not replace tahu before an answer or proposition. Mengenal bahwa... is not the normal equivalent of “know that...”; use tahu bahwa... or formal mengetahui bahwa....
The nearby verb mengenali focuses more sharply on recognizing or identifying by signs or features.
Petugas mengenali wajah pelaku dari rekaman kamera.
The officer recognized the perpetrator's face from the camera footage.
Someone may mengenal seorang penyanyi through personal or cultural familiarity but mengenali suaranya when identifying the voice.
Dikenal: known by or known as
Dikenal presents the person, place, thing, or concept as known. It readily takes an audience with oleh, a label with sebagai, or a characteristic with karena.
That doctor is widely known among residents of the coastal area.
Kota tersebut dikenal sebagai pusat kerajinan perak.
The city is known as a center of silver crafts.
Warung itu dikenal karena sambalnya sangat pedas.
That food stall is known for its extremely spicy sambal.
This method is not yet widely known outside research circles. (academic)
Dikenal sebagai X assigns a recognized identity or role; dikenal karena Y gives the reason for the reputation. Passive di- is attached. Locative di luar kalangan peneliti remains two words.
Terkenal: broad public prominence
Terkenal is a lexicalized predicate meaning famous or well-known. It usually implies a wider public reputation than dikenal, and it does not freely introduce a knower as an oleh-agent.
Desa itu terkenal dengan pemandangan sawah bertingkat.
That village is famous for its terraced rice fields.
He/She is famous as a singer who always appears modestly.
The restaurant is famous for using ingredients from local farmers.
Pulau itu kini terkenal di kalangan penyelam.
The island is now well-known among divers.
The contrast is scalar and discourse-based, not absolute. Dikenal oleh para tetangga may describe a limited group; terkenal di seluruh negeri asserts public prominence. Terkenal dengan, terkenal karena, and terkenal sebagai are all established, but they introduce a characteristic, a reason, and an identity respectively. The wider event-versus-result logic of di- and ter- is developed in the advanced passive guide.
Memperkenalkan: creating familiarity or presenting something
Memperkenalkan is transitive. Its direct object is the person, product, practice, or concept being introduced; the receiving person or audience normally follows kepada.
Rina memperkenalkan saya kepada ketua kelompoknya.
Rina introduced me to the head of her group.
Izinkan saya memperkenalkan diri sebelum presentasi dimulai.
Allow me to introduce myself before the presentation begins. (formal)
Guru memperkenalkan permainan tradisional kepada murid-murid baru.
The teacher introduced traditional games to the new pupils.
The campaign introduces local products to a wider group of consumers. (formal)
In memperkenalkan diri, diri is the direct object and refers back to the subject. In memperkenalkan saya kepada ketua, saya is the introduced person and ketua is the new contact. Mempertemukan merely arranges a meeting; memperkenalkan makes identities or content known.
Panitia mempertemukan kedua pembicara sebelum acara, lalu pembawa acara memperkenalkan mereka kepada hadirin.
The committee brought the two speakers together before the event, then the host introduced them to the audience.
The shorter mengenalkan is also standard and common, especially for making someone familiar with a thing or practice. Memperkenalkan remains the most neutral careful choice for formal personal introductions.
Perkenalan and related nouns
Perkenalan can name an act of introduction, the beginning of an acquaintance, or an introductory phase.
During the introduction session, each participant states their name and origin.

❌ Penyanyi itu terkenal oleh para tetangganya saja.
Incorrect for a limited knowing audience — terkenal profiles public prominence.

That singer is known only by the neighbors.
5. Splitting passive di-
