The ingat network distinguishes retained memory, deliberate attention to memory, spontaneous recall, and caused recall. Bare ingat says that something remains or returns in the experiencer's mind. Mengingat gives the remembering or consideration more explicit actor-oriented framing; teringat presents a thought as arising spontaneously; and mengingatkan introduces a reminder that causes someone else to remember.
The nouns peringatan and kenangan are semantically nearby but lexicalized. Peringatan is commonly a warning, reminder, or commemoration, while kenangan is a memory or keepsake and belongs morphologically to the separate root kenang. General affix rules remain on the Word Formation and Voice pages.
No person or tense paradigm
Ingat is an invariant predicate, not an infinitive equivalent of English to remember. Subject and time expressions provide person and temporal reference.
| Frame | Indonesian | What supplies the interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| first person | Saya ingat namanya. | saya; no agreement |
| third person | Dia ingat namanya. | dia; same predicate |
| plural | Mereka ingat namanya. | mereka; same predicate |
| retained memory | Saya masih ingat namanya. | masih |
| recovered memory | Sekarang saya sudah ingat. | sekarang and sudah |
| future instruction | Nanti ingat pesannya. | nanti; unchanged predicate |
Saya ingat namanya, tetapi lupa nomor teleponnya.
I remember the name but have forgotten the phone number.
Mereka masih ingat kejadian itu dengan jelas.
They still remember that incident clearly.
Sekarang saya sudah ingat tempat kami pertama kali bertemu.
Now I remember the place where we first met.
Indonesian has no forms comparable to English remembers and remembered. Masih, sudah, and time adverbials remain separate from ingat.
Ingat: retained memory and keeping something in mind
Bare ingat can take a noun phrase, a content clause, an embedded question, or an action complement. It can describe a memory state or tell someone to keep an obligation in mind.
Kamu masih ingat alamat rumah lama kita?
Do you still remember the address of our old house?
Saya ingat bahwa pintu belakang sudah saya kunci.
I remember that I locked the back door.
Dia tidak ingat di mana menaruh kartu identitasnya.
He/She does not remember where the identity card was put.
Ingat untuk membawa salinan paspor besok.
Remember to bring a copy of your passport tomorrow.
Kalau bertemu Rudi, ingat sampaikan salam dari saya.
If you meet Rudi, remember to give him my regards. (everyday)
Ingat + noun/clause concerns memory content. Ingat untuk + action looks forward to an intended duty. In casual instructions, untuk may be omitted before a short action, as in ingat bawa payung (informal); careful prose normally retains a full standard verb phrase.
Ingat bawa payung; ramalan cuaca bilang akan hujan.
Remember to bring an umbrella; the forecast says it will rain. (informal)
The expression ingat pada/kepada seseorang keeps a person in mind, while direct ingat namanya presents a memory item. Usage varies, so learn frequent phrases rather than forcing one preposition after every instance.
Nenek selalu ingat kepada cucu-cucunya yang tinggal jauh.
Grandmother always thinks of her grandchildren who live far away.
Mengingat: deliberate recall and formal consideration
Mengingat takes a direct object and gives the mental act more explicit verbal framing. It occurs in careful narration and formal prose, especially when someone recalls, considers, or takes account of something.
Ia berhenti sejenak untuk mengingat urutan kejadian malam itu.
He/She paused briefly to recall the sequence of events that night.
Saya mencoba mengingat wajah orang yang berdiri di dekat pintu.
I tried to remember the face of the person standing near the door.
Kita perlu mengingat kebutuhan warga lanjut usia saat merancang halte.
We need to keep older residents' needs in mind when designing the bus stop. (formal)
Sulit mengingat semua nama peserta setelah satu pertemuan.
It is difficult to remember every participant's name after one meeting.
At the beginning of a formal reason clause, mengingat can mean βconsidering/given,β often followed by a noun phrase or bahwa clause.
Mengingat cuaca semakin buruk, panitia menghentikan kegiatan di luar ruangan.
Considering that the weather was worsening, the committee stopped the outdoor activity. (formal)
Mengingat bahwa anggaran terbatas, proyek itu dibagi menjadi dua tahap.
Given that the budget is limited, the project was divided into two stages. (formal)
This formal connective use is lexicalized; it does not mean that someone is nostalgically remembering the weather or budget.
Mengingatkan: causing or prompting recall
Mengingatkan adds a cause of remembering. Its direct object is normally the person reminded. This is a lexical instance of the valency change introduced in the -kan voice overview. The reminder content follows in one of several conventional frames:
| Frame | Function | Model |
|---|---|---|
| mengingatkan seseorang tentang X | remind someone about a topic/duty | tentang rapat |
| mengingatkan seseorang untuk V | prompt a future action | untuk menelepon |
| mengingatkan seseorang bahwa... | recall a proposition | bahwa kantor tutup |
| mengingatkan seseorang pada X | evoke resemblance or memory | pada rumah lama |
Tolong ingatkan saya tentang rapat dengan pemasok besok.
Please remind me about the meeting with the supplier tomorrow.
Alarm itu mengingatkan saya untuk minum obat tepat waktu.
The alarm reminds me to take my medicine on time.
Petugas mengingatkan pengunjung bahwa museum tutup pukul lima.
The attendant reminded visitors that the museum closes at five.
Aroma roti ini mengingatkan saya pada dapur nenek.
The smell of this bread reminds me of Grandmother's kitchen.
In commands, actor meN- is normally absent: Ingatkan saya nanti. The suffix remains because it carries the causative/reminder frame.
Ingatkan saya nanti malam supaya menelepon Ibu.
Remind me tonight to call Mother.
Teringat: a memory comes to mind
Teringat presents recall as spontaneous or low-control. The experiencer is subject, and the remembered content commonly follows pada/kepada, an embedded question, or a clause.
Tiba-tiba saya teringat pesan ayah sebelum berangkat.
I suddenly remembered Father's message before leaving.
Saat mencium aroma itu, dia teringat pada rumah masa kecilnya.
When smelling that aroma, he/she remembered the childhood home.
Saya baru teringat bahwa hari ini kantor tutup lebih awal.
I just remembered that the office closes early today.
Di tengah perjalanan, kami teringat belum mematikan lampu teras.
Halfway through the journey, we remembered that we had not turned off the porch light.
Unlike mengingat, teringat does not present deliberate mental effort. It is also not a passive meaning βbe remembered by someone.β To center something that remains in people's memory, use a lexical phrase such as masih diingat.
Nasihat guru itu masih diingat oleh banyak mantan muridnya.
That teacher's advice is still remembered by many former pupils.
Peringatan and kenangan
Peringatan is an established noun with several conventional uses: a warning, an official reminder, an alert, or a commemoration (formal in institutional uses).
Badan cuaca mengeluarkan peringatan dini tentang hujan lebat.
The weather agency issued an early warning about heavy rain. (formal)
Ia menerima peringatan tertulis karena berulang kali datang terlambat.
He/She received a written warning for repeatedly arriving late. (formal)
Peringatan Hari Kemerdekaan berlangsung sederhana tahun ini.
This year's Independence Day commemoration was modest. (formal)
Kenangan comes from kenang, not from ingat, even though the meanings overlap. It names a memory that leaves an impression or, by extension, something associated with that memory.
Kami menyimpan banyak kenangan indah dari masa tinggal di Flores.
We keep many fond memories of the time we lived in Flores.
Foto lama itu menjadi kenangan terakhir bersama kakek.
That old photograph became the last keepsake from time with Grandfather.
Peringatan points outward toward caution or public observance; kenangan points inward toward a remembered experience. Neither is obtained by translating the English noun memory mechanically.
Common Mistakes
1. Making the reminder content the direct object instead of the person
β Alarm itu mengingatkan minum obat kepada saya.
Incorrect role order β the person reminded should directly follow the verb.
β Alarm itu mengingatkan saya untuk minum obat.
The alarm reminds me to take my medicine.
2. Using teringat for deliberate effort
β Saya mencoba teringat nomor rekening itu selama satu jam.
Incorrect β trying to recall is deliberate, while teringat is spontaneous.
β Saya mencoba mengingat nomor rekening itu selama satu jam.
I tried to remember that account number for an hour.
3. Using peringatan for a personal memory
β Saya punya banyak peringatan indah tentang masa kecil.
Incorrect β peringatan normally means warning, reminder, or commemoration.
β Saya punya banyak kenangan indah tentang masa kecil.
I have many fond memories of childhood.
4. Splitting an actual derivative
β Pesan itu meng ingatkan saya pada janji lama.
Incorrect spelling β mengingatkan is one word.
β Notifikasi kalender itu mengingatkan saya akan tenggat besok.
That calendar notification reminds me about tomorrow's deadline.
5. Adding English tense morphology
β Kemarin dia ingated nama petugas itu.
Incorrect β ingat takes no past-tense ending.
β Kemarin dia ingat nama petugas itu.
Yesterday he/she remembered the officer's name.
