lupa and melupakan: Verb Family and Usage

The lupa family profiles forgetting from several angles. Bare lupa describes a missing memory or failure to remember. Melupakan gives an actor-oriented, transitive view and can also mean deliberately put something behind you or neglect it. Dilupakan presents a forgetting event from the forgotten participant, terlupakan presents an unnoticed or enduring result, and kelupaan frames a lapse as something that happened to the experiencer.

English forget covers all five perspectives with one verb. Indonesian morphology helps separate state, agency, patient viewpoint, result, and accidental lapseβ€”but the exact meanings remain lexical and cannot be generated solely from an English translation. General affix rules belong on the Word Formation and Voice pages.

No person or tense paradigm

Lupa is an invariant predicate, not an infinitive corresponding to English to forget. It takes no person, number, or tense ending.

Saya lupa namanya meskipun masih ingat wajahnya.

I have forgotten the name even though I still remember the face.

Kemarin mereka lupa membawa kunci cadangan.

Yesterday they forgot to bring the spare key.

Besok jangan lupa mengirim laporan sebelum siang.

Tomorrow do not forget to send the report before noon.

English changes forget to forgets or forgot. Indonesian keeps lupa unchanged; time and aspect are expressed separately.

Lupa: a missing memory or failed intention

Bare lupa can take a noun phrase, content clause, embedded question, or action. It is neutral and common in conversation and writing.

Saya lupa nomor kamar tempat mereka menginap.

I forgot the number of the room where they are staying.

Dia lupa bahwa hari ini kantor tutup lebih awal.

He/She forgot that the office closes earlier today.

Kami lupa di mana mobil diparkir.

We forgot where the car was parked.

Rudi lupa mematikan kipas sebelum keluar.

Rudi forgot to turn off the fan before leaving.

Saya lupa untuk meminta tanda terima.

I forgot to ask for a receipt.

Both lupa membawa and lupa untuk membawa occur. The direct action complement is compact and very common; untuk can make the intended task boundary explicit. Do not put untuk directly before a noun: lupa dompet means forget the wallet, while lupa untuk membawa dompet means forget to bring it.

Lupa akan + noun remains possible, especially in careful or elevated phrasing, but ordinary speech often uses the noun directly.

Dalam kesibukannya, ia tidak lupa akan bantuan teman-teman lama.

Amid the busyness, he/she did not forget the help of old friends. (formal)

Because lupa is normally a state or lapse, neutral progressive sedang lupa is unnatural. Use sudah lupa, tiba-tiba lupa, or a clause describing an ongoing process.

πŸ’‘
Use bare lupa for the ordinary experience of not recalling something or failing to carry out an intended action. A longer derivative is not automatically more correct.

Melupakan: actor-oriented forgetting, release, or neglect

Melupakan is transitive. It presents the subject as the source of a process affecting the object. That framing suits deliberate efforts to put something behind oneself, gradual loss from memory, and neglect of duties as well as ordinary forgetting in careful prose.

Dia berusaha melupakan masa lalu dan memulai kehidupan baru.

He/She is trying to forget the past and begin a new life.

Waktu tidak membuat keluarga itu melupakan orang yang pernah menolong mereka.

Time did not make that family forget the person who once helped them.

Kesibukan sehari-hari membuat kami melupakan rencana untuk beristirahat.

Daily busyness made us forget our plan to take a break.

Pemimpin tidak boleh melupakan kebutuhan kelompok yang paling rentan.

Leaders must not neglect the needs of the most vulnerable groups. (formal)

Saya ingin melupakan pertengkaran itu, bukan mengulanginya.

I want to put that argument behind me, not repeat it.

The direct object follows without tentang: melupakan masa lalu, not normally melupakan tentang masa lalu. Melupakan kewajiban can mean fail to heed or neglect a duty, even if its content has not literally vanished from memory.

Dilupakan: the forgotten participant as topic

Dilupakan is the di- counterpart of melupakan. It presents the person, fact, duty, or experience as the affected participant. An actor may follow directly, occur with oleh, or remain unexpressed.

Janji itu dilupakan kedua pihak setelah keadaan berubah.

That promise was forgotten by both parties after circumstances changed.

Kontribusi para relawan tidak boleh dilupakan.

The volunteers' contribution must not be forgotten.

Namanya perlahan dilupakan oleh generasi berikutnya.

His/Her name was gradually forgotten by the next generation.

Ada satu langkah penting yang dilupakan tim saat melakukan pemeriksaan.

There was one important step that the team forgot during the inspection.

Passive di- attaches in dilupakan. Locative di ruang rapat remains separate, and aspect words remain separate in sudah dilupakan or belum dilupakan.

Terlupakan: an unnoticed or enduring result

Terlupakan profiles the result β€œforgotten, overlooked, no longer remembered.” It often suppresses any particular forgetter and describes something that has slipped from collective attention.

Desa kecil itu hampir terlupakan setelah jalan utama dipindahkan.

That small village was almost forgotten after the main road was rerouted.

Satu nama penting terlupakan saat daftar undangan disusun.

One important name was inadvertently forgotten when the guest list was prepared.

Kisah para pekerja perempuan sering terlupakan dalam catatan sejarah.

The story of women workers is often overlooked in historical accounts. (formal)

Momen sederhana itu tidak akan terlupakan oleh keluarga kami.

That simple moment will never be forgotten by our family.

Dilupakan more readily reports an event or permits an agent; terlupakan emphasizes the resulting absence from memory or attention. The boundary is not perfectly mechanicalβ€”both can occur with olehβ€”but the viewpoint difference remains useful. See the broader ter- versus di- choice guide for the construction-level contrast.

Tim melupakan kebutuhan pejalan kaki, sehingga aspek keselamatan itu terlupakan dalam rancangan akhir.

The team neglected pedestrians' needs, so that safety aspect was overlooked in the final design.

Kelupaan: a lapse experienced by someone

Kelupaan is a standard and very common everyday predicate (informal to neutral). With a human subject, it presents forgetting as an accidental lapse experienced by that person. In colloquial item-topic clauses, the thing accidentally omitted can instead be foregrounded, as in ada satu lampiran yang kelupaan. The predicate can also stand alone or take an action/content complement.

Maaf, saya kelupaan membawa kartu akses.

Sorry, I forgot to bring my access card. (everyday)

Dia kelupaan menelepon ibunya setelah sampai.

He/She forgot to call Mother after arriving. (everyday)

Sepertinya ada satu lampiran yang kelupaan.

It looks as though one attachment was accidentally omitted. (informal)

Saya kelupaan kalau hari ini jadwalnya berubah.

I forgot that today's schedule had changed. (informal)

In formal incident reporting, a writer may choose lupa, tidak sengaja tidak..., or terlewat to specify the event more impersonally. Kelupaan is not simply a passive and does not introduce an oleh-agent.

πŸ’‘
Track viewpoint: melupakan X begins with the forgetter, X dilupakan begins with the patient of a forgetting event, X terlupakan describes a forgotten result, and saya kelupaan foregrounds my accidental lapse.

Established expressions

Several lupa expressions have conventional meanings. Lupa diri is lose self-control or lose sight of one's position; lupa waktu is become so absorbed that one loses track of time; lupa daratan describes conduct that has gone far beyond proper limits (informal, strongly disapproving). Lupa-lupa ingat means remember only vaguely.

Kami mengobrol sampai lupa waktu dan hampir ketinggalan kereta.

We talked until we lost track of time and almost missed the train.

Setelah mendapat pujian, ia tidak lupa diri dan tetap rendah hati.

After receiving praise, he/she did not lose perspective and remained humble.

Saya lupa-lupa ingat nama restoran yang kita kunjungi tahun lalu.

I vaguely remember the name of the restaurant we visited last year.

The hyphens in lupa-lupa ingat mark genuine reduplication. Actual derivatives melupakan, dilupakan, terlupakan, and kelupaan are written solid.

Common Mistakes

1. Using melupakan before an action complement

❌ Saya melupakan membawa kartu identitas.

Incorrect for a simple failed intention β€” use bare lupa before the action.

βœ… Saya lupa membawa kartu identitas.

I forgot to bring my identity card.

2. Adding tentang after a transitive derivative

❌ Dia berusaha melupakan tentang masalah itu.

Incorrect β€” melupakan takes its object directly.

βœ… Dia berusaha melupakan masalah itu.

He/She is trying to forget that problem.

3. Using terlupakan for a deliberate agentive event

❌ Kontribusi kelompok itu terlupakan oleh panitia dengan sengaja.

Incorrect viewpoint β€” terlupakan presents an unnoticed result, not a deliberate omission.

βœ… Kontribusi kelompok itu sengaja tidak disebutkan oleh panitia.

That group's contribution was deliberately not mentioned by the committee.

4. Splitting passive di-

❌ Pesan penting itu di lupakan semua orang.

Incorrect spelling β€” passive di- attaches to lupakan.

βœ… Pesan penting itu dilupakan semua orang.

That important message was forgotten by everyone.

5. Applying progressive aspect to a lapse state

❌ Saya sedang lupa alamat kantor cabang.

Incorrect for the ordinary state of not remembering.

βœ… Saya sudah lupa alamat kantor cabang.

I have forgotten the branch office address.
