Indonesian bawa covers carrying and accompanying something in motion. Unlike English bring versus take, it does not by itself encode motion toward or away from the speaker. Membawakan adds a beneficiary in one frame but means perform or present in another; bawaan and pembawa are established nouns with several lexicalized uses.
No person or tense endings
Membawa stays unchanged with every subject and time. Separate words provide aspect, future reference, and time.
| Context | Indonesian | Cue |
|---|---|---|
| I, now | saya membawa tas | context |
| she, earlier | tadi dia membawa tas | tadi |
| they, ongoing | mereka sedang membawa tas | sedang |
| we, tomorrow | besok kami akan membawa tas | besok, akan |
Saya membawa tas kerja yang berisi laptop dan dokumen.
I am carrying a work bag containing a laptop and documents.
Tadi dia membawa dua koper ke stasiun.
Earlier she took two suitcases to the station.
Besok kami akan membawa makanan dari rumah.
Tomorrow we will bring food from home.
English changes both tense and direction words. Indonesian keeps membawa and lets ke stasiun, dari rumah, the speaker's location, or the surrounding situation establish direction.
Bare bawa: commands and object voice
Use bare bawa in commands. It also follows a pronominal actor in object voice when the carried item is placed first.
Bawa payung ini kalau langit masih gelap.
Take this umbrella if the sky is still dark.
Tolong bawa piring kotor itu ke dapur.
Please take those dirty dishes to the kitchen.
Berkas aslinya saya bawa ke kantor pusat kemarin.
I took the original file to the head office yesterday.
Obat ini harus kamu bawa saat bepergian.
You must take this medicine with you when traveling.
Actor-first bare saya bawa is common in conversation (informal); Standard Indonesian actor voice uses saya membawa in careful prose. Bawa is not an infinitive, and neither form carries tense.
membawa: carry, bring, take, or lead along
Membawa takes the carried person or thing as its object. The carrier maintains association with that object during motion. A destination, source, path, or occasion supplies the spatial frame.
Petugas membawa kotak suara ke balai desa.
The officers take the ballot box to the village hall.
Rani membawa oleh-oleh dari Makassar untuk teman-temannya.
Rani brings souvenirs from Makassar for her friends.
Boleh saya membawa seorang teman ke acara malam ini?
May I bring a friend to tonight's event?
Jangan membawa terlalu banyak barang saat mendaki.
Do not carry too many things while hiking.
The reference point decides the English translation:
Tolong bawa dokumen itu ke ruangan saya.
Please bring that document to my room.
Tolong bawa dokumen ini ke ruang arsip.
Please take this document to the archive room.
Both use bawa. The destinations make one movement speaker-oriented and the other away from the current location.
Membawa also extends to causing or carrying abstract consequences. These collocations are current but must be learned lexically.
Angin timur membawa udara kering ke wilayah ini.
The east wind brings dry air to this region.
Keputusan itu membawa perubahan besar bagi warga desa.
That decision brought major changes for the villagers.
Pengalaman tersebut membawa saya pada kesimpulan yang berbeda.
That experience led me to a different conclusion.
dibawa: the carried participant as pivot
Dibawa makes the carried person or thing central. The carrier can follow the verb or appear after oleh. Write passive di- solid, unlike locative di.
Kotak suara dibawa petugas ke balai desa sebelum subuh.
The officers took the ballot box to the village hall before dawn.
Makanan dari rumah sudah dibawa oleh kakak saya.
My older sibling has already brought the food from home.
Tas besar tidak boleh dibawa ke dalam ruang ujian.
Large bags may not be taken into the examination room.
Anak yang sakit itu dibawa ke klinik terdekat.
The sick child was taken to the nearest clinic.
Dokumen yang dibawa di dalam tas itu harus tetap kering.
The documents carried in that bag must remain dry.
The last example shows attached dibawa and separate locative di dalam tas.
membawakan: doing the carrying for someone
In its benefactive frame, membawakan means carry, bring, or take something for another participant. With untuk, the carried theme remains immediately after the verb.
Saya membawakan air hangat untuk ibu setelah makan malam.
I bring Mother warm water after dinner.
Petugas hotel membawakan koper untuk tamu lanjut usia.
The hotel employee carries a suitcase for an elderly guest.
Dimas membawakan bekal untuk adiknya yang sedang berlatih.

A beneficiary-first double-object frame is also available, especially with pronouns and familiar human recipients.
Tolong bawakan saya sebotol air dari dapur.
Please bring me a bottle of water from the kitchen.
Rina membawakan ibunya obat dari apotek.
Rina brings her mother medicine from the pharmacy.
Pelayan membawakan kami dua cangkir teh panas.
The server brings us two cups of hot tea.
Here saya, ibunya, and kami are beneficiaries; the following noun is the carried theme. The suffix adds this participant rather than marking tense.
Kami dibawakan dua cangkir teh panas oleh pelayan.
The server brought us two cups of hot tea.
Dua cangkir teh panas dibawakan untuk kami.
Two cups of hot tea were brought for us.
The passive can center the beneficiary in the first frame or the theme in the untuk frame. This follows the broader benefactive -kan pattern.
membawakan: perform or present
A distinct lexicalized frame means perform a song, dance, role, story, news item, or program. No beneficiary needs to be inferred. The object is the work or program presented to an audience.
Penyanyi muda itu membawakan lagu lama dengan aransemen baru.
The young singer performs an old song with a new arrangement.
Kelompok teater sekolah membawakan cerita rakyat dari Maluku.

That actor performs his role very convincingly.
This meaning is not predictable from βcarry for.β Learn membawakan lagu, membawakan acara, and membawakan peran as conventional collocations.
bawaan: what is brought or inherent
Bawaan is a lexical noun or modifier. Barang bawaan means belongings or luggage brought along. Bawaan lahir and sifat bawaan describe something innate or congenital, metaphorically βbrought from birth.β

She has an innate talent for recognizing pitch.
These senses are established; do not assume bawaan is a productive translation for every English noun βthing brought.β
pembawa: carrier, bearer, or presenter
Pembawa profiles a person, organism, object, or medium that carries something. Its complement often forms a conventional compound.
Pembawa acara mengumumkan pemenang pada akhir acara.
The host announces the winner at the end of the event.
Nyamuk tertentu dapat menjadi pembawa penyakit.
Certain mosquitoes can be carriers of disease.
Angin menjadi pembawa asap ke arah permukiman.
The wind carries smoke toward the residential area.

The courier is the bearer of official documents from the court. (formal)
Pembawa acara is a host or presenter, not someone physically carrying an event. This is another lexicalized family member.

β Tolong ambil dokumen ini ke ruang arsip.
Incorrect for carrying the document there β ambil foregrounds obtaining it, not accompanying it to a destination.
β Bawa dokumen ini ke ruang arsip.
Take this document to the archive room.
Omitting -kan in a beneficiary-first frame
β Tolong membawa saya satu cangkir kopi.
Incorrect for βbring me coffeeβ β plain membawa does not license this beneficiary-first frame.
