The ambil family begins with taking or obtaining something, but morphology reorganizes the participants. Mengambil centers the actor and the thing taken, diambil centers that thing, and benefactive mengambilkan adds the person for whom the taking is done. Pengambilan names a process or scheduled pickup, while terambil commonly presents accidental or unintended taking.
No person or tense endings
The predicate does not agree with its subject and does not carry tense. Use separate time, aspect, and modal words.
| Context | Indonesian | Cue |
|---|---|---|
| I, now | saya mengambil kunci | context |
| she, earlier | tadi dia mengambil kunci | tadi |
| they, ongoing | mereka sedang mengambil kunci | sedang |
| we, later | nanti kami akan mengambil kunci | nanti, akan |
Saya mengambil kunci cadangan dari laci dapur.
I take the spare key from the kitchen drawer.
Tadi dia mengambil kunci mobil tanpa memberi tahu saya.
Earlier she took the car key without telling me.
Nanti kami akan mengambil kunci kamar di meja resepsionis.
Later we will pick up the room key at the reception desk.
English take, took, and will take correspond to the unchanged mengambil plus context. Bare ambil is not an infinitive from which tense forms are conjugated.
Bare ambil: commands and object voice
Use bare ambil directly in an instruction or invitation. It also follows a first- or second-person actor when the taken object is placed first in object voice.
Ambil ini dan simpan di saku depanmu.
Take this and keep it in your front pocket.
Tolong ambil dua gelas dari lemari.
Please get two glasses from the cupboard.
Payung biru itu saya ambil karena hujan mulai deras.
I took that blue umbrella because the rain was getting heavy.
Paket ini bisa kamu ambil setelah menunjukkan kartu identitas.
You can collect this package after showing an identity card.
Actor-first saya ambil is also frequent in conversation (informal). Careful actor-oriented prose normally chooses saya mengambil. Voice and discourse—not time—explain the alternation.
mengambil: take, get, collect, or select
Mengambil is transitive: the actor subject obtains, removes, collects, or selects the following object. A source can appear with dari, and a pickup location often appears with di.
Rina mengambil dompetnya dari dalam tas.
Rina takes her wallet out of her bag.
Kurir akan mengambil paket antara pukul dua dan empat.
The courier will collect the package between two and four.
Silakan mengambil satu formulir di meja dekat pintu.
Please take one form from the table near the door.
Petugas mengambil sampel air untuk diperiksa di laboratorium.
The officer takes a water sample to be examined in the laboratory.
English distinguishes take from bring by direction toward or away from a reference point. Mengambil instead foregrounds obtaining or removing the object; subsequent motion is supplied by context or another verb.
Several common combinations have conventional extended meanings and should be learned whole.
Setelah berdiskusi, kami mengambil keputusan untuk menunda acara.
After discussing it, we made the decision to postpone the event.
Dua mahasiswa mengambil bagian dalam penelitian tersebut.
Two students took part in that research.
Wakil direktur mengambil alih rapat ketika direktur pergi.
The deputy director took over the meeting when the director left.
Mengambil keputusan, mengambil bagian, and mengambil alih are lexical combinations. Their English translations do not license the same extensions for every ambil derivative.
diambil: the thing taken becomes central
Diambil is the passive counterpart. The taken or collected item becomes the clause's subject; an actor may follow directly, appear after oleh, or remain unexpressed.
Kartu peserta diambil panitia setelah acara selesai.
The committee collects the participant cards after the event ends.
Sampel darah itu sudah diambil oleh perawat.
The blood sample has already been taken by the nurse.
Pesanan dapat diambil di loket sebelah kanan.
Orders can be collected at the counter on the right.
Foto ini diambil dari jembatan lama saat matahari terbit.
This photo was taken from the old bridge at sunrise.
The last sentence shows a lexical extension: mengambil foto and foto diambil mean take a photograph. Write passive diambil solid, but locative di loket separately.
mengambilkan: take or fetch something for someone
Benefactive mengambilkan adds a participant who benefits from the action. A clear, widely useful pattern keeps the thing taken as the object and introduces the beneficiary with untuk.
Saya mengambilkan air hangat untuk tamu yang baru datang.
I get warm water for the guest who has just arrived.
Bisakah kamu mengambilkan obat untuk Nenek?
Can you get some medicine for Grandma?
Petugas mengambilkan kursi tambahan untuk pengunjung lanjut usia.
The officer gets an extra chair for an elderly visitor.
In a double-object pattern, the beneficiary may immediately follow mengambilkan, with the fetched theme after it. This makes the added participant structurally prominent.
Tolong ambilkan saya segelas air dingin.
Please get me a glass of cold water.
Ayah mengambilkan adik handuk bersih.
Dad gets my younger sibling a clean towel.
Perawat mengambilkan pasien itu selimut tambahan.
The nurse gets that patient an extra blanket.
Compare plain mengambil air “get water” with mengambilkan saya air “get me water.” -kan has added a beneficiary; it is not a tense marker.
The two frames support different passive centers:
Saya diambilkan segelas air dingin oleh Rudi.
Rudi gets me a glass of cold water.
Segelas air dingin diambilkan untuk saya oleh Rudi.
A glass of cold water is fetched for me by Rudi.
The beneficiary is the passive subject in the first pattern. The theme is subject in the second, with the beneficiary in untuk saya. See -kan arguments for the general alternation.
pengambilan: process, removal, or pickup
Pengambilan packages taking as a noun. Its interpretation depends on what is taken: it can be collection, retrieval, withdrawal, sampling, filming, or a procedural “taking.” Institutional contexts use it frequently (formal).
Pengambilan paspor dibuka setiap hari kerja sampai pukul tiga.
Passport collection is available every weekday until three.
Jadwal pengambilan sampel berubah karena laboratorium tutup.
The sampling schedule changed because the laboratory is closed.
Bank membatasi pengambilan uang tunai dalam jumlah besar.
The bank limits large cash withdrawals.
Pengambilan gambar dilakukan sebelum pasar mulai ramai.
Filming took place before the market became crowded.
These readings are established collocations; pengambilan does not automatically mean every English noun derived from “take.”
terambil: accidentally or inadvertently taken
Terambil commonly describes an item that gets taken unintentionally, often because it was mixed up with another item. The actor may be omitted because the mishap, not responsibility, is central.
Payung saya terambil orang lain di depan toko.
Someone else accidentally took my umbrella outside the shop.
Satu lembar kosong ikut terambil bersama dokumen asli.
A blank sheet was accidentally picked up with the original document.
Maaf, bukumu ikut terambil karena sampulnya mirip dengan buku saya.
Sorry, your book was accidentally taken along because its cover resembles mine.
Terambil is a conventional accidental reading, not simply a freely interchangeable passive. An intentional collection uses diambil.
Berkas itu sengaja diambil petugas untuk diperiksa.
The officer deliberately took the file for inspection.
Common Mistakes
Conjugating the base for past time
❌ Tadi pagi saya ambil-ed uang di mesin ATM.
Incorrect — Indonesian does not add an English past-tense ending.
✅ Tadi pagi saya mengambil uang di mesin ATM.
This morning I withdrew money from an ATM.
Omitting the benefactive suffix
❌ Tolong mengambil saya segelas air.
Incorrect for ‘get me water’ — plain mengambil does not license this beneficiary-first frame.
✅ Tolong ambilkan saya segelas air.
Please get me a glass of water.
Mixing two beneficiary frames
❌ Ibu mengambilkan untuk adik sebuah handuk.
Incorrect order — with untuk, put the fetched theme directly after the verb.
✅ Ibu mengambilkan sebuah handuk untuk adik.
Mother gets a towel for my younger sibling.
Separating passive di-
❌ Paket itu sudah di ambil oleh kurir.
Incorrect spelling — passive di- attaches to the verb.
✅ Paket itu sudah diambil oleh kurir.
The courier has already collected the package.
Using terambil for deliberate action
❌ Petugas sengaja terambil kartu peserta.
Incorrect — terambil presents accidental taking and does not take an actor subject this way.
✅ Petugas sengaja mengambil kartu peserta.
The officer deliberately takes the participant card.
Key Takeaways
- Mengambil selects the thing obtained; diambil makes that item central.
- Mengambilkan adds a beneficiary, either in a beneficiary-first double-object frame or with untuk.
- Pengambilan is a process noun whose exact interpretation comes from its collocation.
- Terambil commonly marks unintended taking, not ordinary intentional passive action.
