kecuali, selain, and Exceptive Clauses

An exceptive expression starts with a set or rule and then removes something from it. Semua hadir kecuali Rina includes everyone in the attendance claim except Rina. Kecuali jika hujan... removes one circumstance from a more general plan. Selain, however, can either remove an item (“except”) or add another one (“besides”).

The central question is therefore not “Which word means English except or besides?” Decide whether the relation is set subtraction, conditional exemption, or addition. The conditional linker guide develops the internal semantics of jika/kalau; this page focuses on the exception boundary.

Kecuali plus a noun phrase: remove one member

After a generalization, kecuali + noun phrase identifies a member outside that generalization.

Semua hadir kecuali Rina.

Everyone attended except Rina.

Setiap pintu sudah dikunci kecuali pintu gudang.

Every door has been locked except the storeroom door.

Kami menyediakan semua ukuran kecuali ukuran paling kecil.

We stock every size except the smallest one.

Tidak seorang pun boleh masuk kecuali petugas yang bertugas.

No one may enter except the officers on duty.

The exception must belong to the relevant set: Rina is one of the people expected to attend; the storeroom door is one of the doors; the smallest size is one of the possible sizes.

Semua cabang buka pada hari Sabtu kecuali cabang di dekat pelabuhan.

All branches are open on Saturday except the branch near the harbor.

Saya sudah membaca seluruh lampiran kecuali tabel pada halaman terakhir.

I have read all the attachments except the table on the final page.

No comma normally separates a compact final exception from the phrase it restricts. The construction forms one integrated statement.

💡
To test a noun-phrase exception, make a set: “all X.” The phrase after kecuali must be a plausible X that the sentence then removes.

Kecuali untuk: exempt a domain or participant

Kecuali untuk + noun phrase is useful when a rule, service, fee, or statement applies generally but not to/for a particular group or domain. The required model is:

Aturan ini berlaku kecuali untuk anak-anak.

This rule applies except to children.

Often a direct restatement with tidak berlaku untuk is even clearer:

Aturan ini tidak berlaku untuk anak-anak berusia di bawah dua belas tahun.

This rule does not apply to children under twelve.

The exceptive form is natural when the general application is already prominent.

Biaya layanan berlaku untuk semua jenis akun kecuali untuk akun pendidikan.

The service fee applies to every account type except educational accounts.

Ketentuan reservasi berlaku untuk semua acara kecuali untuk rapat internal.

The reservation requirement applies to every event except internal meetings.

Ketentuan pembayaran di muka berlaku bagi semua pesanan, kecuali untuk pembelian oleh instansi pemerintah.

The advance-payment provision applies to all orders, except purchases by government agencies. (formal)

The comma in the last example marks a heavier supplementary exception after a complete formal statement. It is not required merely because kecuali untuk appears.

Use untuk when the underlying relation requires it: a rule applies untuk a group, a charge is untuk a service, or an exception concerns intended use. Do not insert untuk before every exception.

Semua peserta menerima sertifikat kecuali dua orang yang pulang lebih awal.

All participants received certificates except two people who left early.

Here the exception is directly a subset of semua peserta, so bare kecuali is sufficient.

Kecuali jika and kecuali kalau: conditional exemption

Kecuali jika + clause means “except if/unless”: a general rule holds, but one circumstance suspends it. Kecuali jika is neutral-formal; kecuali kalau is common in conversation.

Kecuali jika hujan turun sangat deras, acara akan tetap berlangsung di halaman.

Unless it rains very heavily, the event will still take place in the courtyard.

Kami tidak akan mengubah jadwal kecuali jika pembicara utama berhalangan hadir.

We will not change the schedule unless the keynote speaker is unable to attend.

Garansi tetap berlaku kecuali jika perangkat dibongkar oleh pihak yang tidak berwenang.

The warranty remains valid unless the device is dismantled by an unauthorized party. (formal)

Aku tunggu di sini kecuali kalau kamu mau bertemu di tempat lain.

I'll wait here unless you want to meet somewhere else. (conversational)

Jangan buka pintu itu kecuali kalau petugas keamanan sudah datang.

Don't open that door unless the security officer has arrived. (conversational)

When the exception clause comes first, close it with a comma. A final integrated exception normally takes no comma.

Kecuali jika ada perubahan mendadak, hasil seleksi diumumkan pada hari Senin.

Unless there is a sudden change, the selection results will be announced on Monday.

Pengunjung tidak boleh membawa makanan dari luar kecuali jika memiliki kebutuhan medis khusus.

Visitors may not bring in outside food unless they have a specific medical need.

The main clause establishes the default; the kecuali jika/kalau clause identifies the condition under which that default does not hold.

Selain as exceptive “other than”

In a negative or restrictive environment, selain can mean “other than/except.”

Tidak ada yang mengetahui kode itu selain kepala bagian.

No one knows that code except the division head.

Kami tidak menjual minuman lain selain air mineral.

We do not sell any drinks other than mineral water.

Dia tidak membawa apa pun selain sebuah buku catatan kecil.

He or she brought nothing except a small notebook.

Siapa lagi selain Nanda yang memiliki kunci ruang arsip?

Who other than Nanda has a key to the archive room?

In declaratives with tidak ada, tidak...lain, or apa pun, the phrase after selain names the sole surviving alternative. A question with siapa lagi selain X instead treats X as a known member and asks whether anyone else belongs to the set.

Tidak tersedia jalur lain selain jalan setapak di belakang desa.

No route is available other than the footpath behind the village.

Here selain does not add the footpath to several available routes; it identifies the sole available route.

Selain as additive: add another member

In a positive context, especially with juga, selain X often means “besides/in addition to X.”

Selain Rika, dua anggota baru juga ikut rapat.

Besides Rika, two new members also attended the meeting.

Selain memeriksa tiket, petugas juga membantu penumpang membawa koper.

Besides checking tickets, the officer also helps passengers carry luggage.

Kafe itu menyediakan sarapan selain menjual kopi dari berbagai daerah.

The cafe provides breakfast in addition to selling coffee from various regions.

The initial selain phrase is followed by a comma because it frames the following clause. Juga makes the additive reading explicit.

The fixed sentence connector Selain itu means “in addition/besides that” and adds a new point:

Ruang tunggunya sempit. Selain itu, tidak tersedia kursi untuk penumpang lanjut usia.

The waiting room is cramped. In addition, there are no seats for elderly passengers.

Harga paket ini lebih rendah. Selain itu, masa garansinya lebih panjang.

This package costs less. Moreover, its warranty period is longer.

This page only marks the contrast: sentence-initial Selain itu is additive discourse organization, not an exception. A following comma separates the connector from the sentence it organizes.

💡
Negative restriction plus selain X usually leaves X as the exception. Positive selain X plus juga usually adds another member. Polarity and complement type jointly determine the reading.

Scope: what does the exception restrict?

An exception attaches to some generalization, obligation, prohibition, or quantified set. Place it near that material.

Semua pegawai kecuali manajer mendapat jadwal kerja baru.

All employees except the manager received a new work schedule.

Jadwal kerja baru berlaku setiap minggu kecuali pada minggu terakhir bulan ini.

The new work schedule applies every week except during the final week of this month.

The first removes one employee from the subject set. The second removes a time period from the schedule's coverage.

Kami tidak menerima pengembalian barang kecuali jika produk tiba dalam keadaan rusak.

We do not accept returns unless the product arrives damaged.

Kami menerima semua pengembalian barang kecuali produk yang telah digunakan.

We accept all returned goods except products that have been used.

The first exempts a condition from a prohibition; the second subtracts a class of products from an accepted set.

Long-distance placement can blur scope:

❌ Setiap peserta mendapat satu kartu makan kecuali pendamping, yang dapat membeli kartu tambahan di loket.

Conceptually defective if companions are not members of the participant set.

If pendamping are not members of the category peserta, this wording is conceptually defective even though the phrase is nearby. The writer must establish the correct superordinate set.

✅ Setiap orang yang terdaftar mendapat satu kartu makan, kecuali pendamping yang memilih membeli kartu sendiri.

Every registered person receives one meal card, except companions who choose to buy their own card.

Common Mistakes

Using kecuali for something outside the set

❌ Semua kendaraan diparkir di luar kecuali hujan deras.

Incorrect — heavy rain is not a member of the vehicle set.

✅ Semua kendaraan diparkir di luar kecuali kendaraan petugas darurat.

All vehicles are parked outside except emergency-service vehicles.

Translating besides without deciding addition or exception

❌ Tidak ada yang datang selain Rina dan dua tamu juga hadir.

Contradictory packaging — selain Rina is exceptive after tidak ada, but the sentence then adds other attendees.

✅ Selain Rina, dua tamu dari Bandung juga hadir.

Besides Rina, two guests from Bandung also attended.

Reversing the multiword conditional exception

❌ Jika kecuali hujan turun, acara tetap di luar.

Incorrect order — the conditional exception begins with kecuali jika.

✅ Acara tetap di luar kecuali jika hujan turun sebelum sore.

The event remains outdoors unless it rains before the afternoon.

Using only one comma around an inserted exception

❌ Semua meja, kecuali meja kasir sudah dibersihkan.

Incorrect punctuation — an inserted parenthetical exception would need a closing comma; the compact integrated subject needs neither comma.

✅ Semua meja sudah dibersihkan kecuali meja kasir di dekat pintu.

All the tables have been cleaned except the cashier's table near the door.

Writing multiword combinations together

❌ Kecualijika listrik padam, toko tutup pukul sembilan.

Incorrect spelling — kecuali jika consists of two separate words.

✅ Kecuali jika listrik padam, toko tetap buka sampai pukul sembilan.

Unless the power goes out, the shop stays open until nine.

Key Takeaways

  • Kecuali + noun phrase subtracts a member from a set; kecuali untuk marks an exempt domain or participant.
  • Kecuali jika/kalau + clause suspends a general rule under one condition.
  • Negative or restrictive selain often means “except,” while positive selain plus juga often means “in addition to.”
  • Sentence-initial Selain itu is additive, not exceptive.
  • Place an exception beside the expression it restricts, and use commas according to clause structure rather than the mere presence of a linker.
