sambil, seraya, and sembari: Simultaneous Action

Sambil, seraya, and sembari link two actions that one participant performs at the same time. In Dia makan sambil membaca, the person who eats is also the person who reads. The linker marks one action as the accompanying activity while the other remains the main assertion.

English while covers a wider area: it can connect two independent people, introduce a contrast, or describe one person's concurrent actions. Indonesian distinguishes these structures. This page focuses on shared-subject simultaneity; advanced temporal linking covers two-subject sementara, and serial-verb sentences covers direct verb sequences without a linker.

The core sambil pattern

The everyday pattern is:

subject + main action + sambil + accompanying action

Dia makan sambil membaca.

He or she eats while reading.

Nina berjalan pulang sambil menelepon ibunya.

Nina walks home while calling her mother.

Pak Rudi menyapu halaman sambil mendengarkan berita pagi.

Mr. Rudi sweeps the yard while listening to the morning news.

Kami menunggu kereta sambil membahas rencana akhir pekan.

We waited for the train while discussing our weekend plans.

The subject appears once and controls both predicates. The verbs retain their normal morphology: membaca, menelepon, mendengarkan, membahas. Sambil is a separate word.

Ask β€œWho performs the action after sambil?” In the core construction, the answer is the same participant who performs the main action.

Main action versus accompanying action

The clause without sambil carries the main assertion. The sambil clause presents another activity as its concurrent accompaniment.

Lia memasak makan malam sambil menonton pertandingan.

Lia cooked dinner while watching the match. (cooking is foregrounded)

Lia menonton pertandingan sambil memasak makan malam.

Lia watched the match while cooking dinner. (watching is foregrounded)

Both sentences describe overlap, but they answer different questions. The first naturally answers β€œWhat was Lia doing in the kitchen?”; the second answers β€œHow did Lia watch the match?” or β€œWhat else did she do while watching?”

Arman menjelaskan rutenya sambil menggambar peta kecil.

Arman explained the route while drawing a small map.

Sinta mengangguk sambil menyimpan catatan itu ke dalam tas.

Sinta nodded while putting the note into her bag.

Anak-anak bernyanyi sambil bertepuk tangan.

The children sang while clapping their hands.

The two actions must be compatible in time. They need not begin and end at exactly the same instant, but they overlap meaningfully.

Raka membuka pintu sambil tersenyum kepada para tamu.

Raka opened the door while smiling at the guests.

Opening is brief, while smiling may extend around it. Sambil identifies their overlap, not equal duration.

Initial sambil frames the situation

The accompanying action may come first. Under EYD V, close an initial sambil clause with a comma.

Sambil menunggu, saya bekerja.

While waiting, I work.

Sambil menunggu pesanan datang, saya menjawab beberapa surel.

While waiting for the order to arrive, I answered a few emails.

Sambil berjalan menuju halte, Deni menceritakan hasil wawancaranya.

While walking toward the bus stop, Deni described how his interview had gone.

Sambil membersihkan rak, kami memisahkan buku yang rusak.

While cleaning the shelves, we separated the damaged books.

In each case the main-clause subjectβ€”saya, Deni, kamiβ€”also supplies the understood subject of the initial sambil clause. Initial placement establishes a background activity before presenting the foregrounded event.

A final compact sambil clause normally takes no comma:

Dewi menutup jendela sambil menggendong bayinya.

Dewi closed the window while holding her baby.

Sambil versus two independently unfolding clauses

When different people perform the two actions, use a two-clause temporal linker such as sementara rather than assigning an unrelated hidden subject after sambil.

Sementara Dita menyiapkan sarapan, suaminya membangunkan anak-anak.

While Dita prepared breakfast, her husband woke the children.

Dokter memeriksa pasien sementara perawat memperbarui catatan medis.

The doctor examined the patient while the nurse updated the medical record.

These are two full clauses with two overt subjects. The events overlap, but neither participant controls both predicates.

Compare the shared-subject version:

Perawat memperbarui catatan medis sambil berbicara dengan pasien.

The nurse updated the medical record while speaking with the patient.

Now the nurse both updates and speaks. Indonesian conversation sometimes stretches sambil toward broader temporal uses, but learners should use the shared-participant pattern as the reliable Standard Indonesian core.

One participant doing two things favors sambil. Two participants each doing one thing favors sementara. This participant contrast is more reliable than translating English while.

Sambil and direct serial verbs

Some posture or motion sequences can occur without any linker: duduk membaca, pergi membeli, berdiri menunggu. Adding sambil explicitly highlights simultaneity.

Banu duduk membaca laporan di teras belakang.

Banu sat reading the report on the back terrace. (compact serial sequence)

Banu duduk sambil membaca laporan di teras belakang.

Banu sat while reading the report on the back terrace. (simultaneity explicit)

Dua petugas berdiri mengawasi gerbang utama.

Two officers stood watching the main gate. (compact serial sequence)

Dua petugas berbicara sambil tetap mengawasi gerbang utama.

Two officers talked while continuing to watch the main gate.

The direct sequence often treats posture or motion as the setting of one integrated activity. Sambil presents two recognizable activities as concurrent. Neither construction is an English tense form.

Negation inside a sambil clause

Put tidak before the accompanying predicate when the concurrent circumstance is nonaction or absence.

Reno mendengarkan penjelasan itu sambil tidak mengatakan apa-apa.

Reno listened to the explanation without saying anything.

Ia terus berjalan sambil tidak menoleh ke belakang.

He or she kept walking without looking back.

Maya menjawab pertanyaan sambil tidak melepas pandangan dari layar.

Maya answered the question without taking her eyes off the screen.

These sentences literally frame β€œnot saying,” β€œnot looking,” or β€œnot taking one's eyes away” as a state concurrent with the main action. In many contexts, tanpa + predicate is a leaner way to express simple absence:

Reno meninggalkan ruangan tanpa mengucapkan sepatah kata pun.

Reno left the room without saying a single word.

Choose sambil tidak when simultaneity and the maintained nonaction matter; choose tanpa when exclusion or absence is the main relation.

Seraya: literary or elevated simultaneity

Seraya has the same shared-subject core but sounds more literary, elevated, or formal than everyday sambil. It is especially common with speech, gesture, and narrative movement.

Ia menyerahkan surat itu seraya menundukkan kepala.

He or she handed over the letter while bowing their head. (literary)

"Silakan masuk," katanya seraya membuka pintu lebih lebar.

β€œPlease come in,” he or she said while opening the door wider. (literary)

Pemimpin upacara mengangkat tangan seraya mengucapkan sumpah.

The ceremony leader raised a hand while reciting the oath. (formal/literary)

A register-matched rewrite shows that the relation stays constant while the style changes:

Tono tersenyum sambil memberikan kunci itu kepada adiknya.

Tono smiled while giving the key to his younger sibling. (neutral)

Tono tersenyum seraya menyerahkan kunci itu kepada adiknya.

Tono smiled as he handed the key to his younger sibling. (literary)

Using seraya in a casual request about a routine chore can sound deliberately elevated.

Sembari: polished and often literary

Sembari is also part of contemporary Standard Indonesian. It is common in edited narrative, essays, and polished description (formal/literary), though individual speakers vary in how marked it feels.

Warga menunggu kabar sembari berkumpul di balai desa.

Residents awaited news while gathering at the village hall. (formal/literary)

Ia memandang laut sembari mengingat percakapan terakhir mereka.

He or she gazed at the sea while recalling their last conversation. (literary)

Tim meninjau kembali data sembari menyusun laporan akhir.

The team reviewed the data while preparing the final report. (formal)

Compare a neutral and a polished version:

Kami minum kopi sambil menunggu toko buka.

We drank coffee while waiting for the shop to open. (neutral)

Kami menikmati kopi sembari menanti toko dibuka.

We enjoyed coffee while awaiting the shop's opening. (polished/literary)

The second sentence changes more than the linker: menikmati and menanti also match its elevated register. Register is a property of the whole expression, not one magic word.

Common Mistakes

Giving the sambil clause an unrelated actor

❌ Sari memasak sambil adiknya mencuci piring.

Incorrect in the core shared-subject construction β€” adiknya introduces a separate actor after sambil.

βœ… Sari memasak sementara adiknya mencuci piring.

Sari cooked while her younger sibling washed the dishes.

Translating every English while with sambil

❌ Sambil harga naik, pendapatan kami tetap.

Incorrect for two independently developing situations β€” sambil requires a shared controller here.

βœ… Sementara harga naik, pendapatan kami tetap tidak berubah.

While prices rose, our income remained unchanged.

Omitting the comma after an initial clause

❌ Sambil menunggu bus kami memeriksa jadwal kereta.

Incorrect punctuation β€” the initial sambil clause needs a closing comma.

βœ… Sambil menunggu bus, kami memeriksa jadwal kereta terakhir.

While waiting for the bus, we checked the last train's schedule.

Writing the linker together with the verb

❌ Nita menyetrika sambilmenonton berita.

Incorrect spelling β€” sambil is a separate word.

βœ… Nita menyetrika sambil menonton berita malam.

Nita ironed clothes while watching the evening news.

Key Takeaways

  • Sambil normally links two overlapping actions controlled by one participant.
  • The non-sambil clause is foregrounded; reversing the clauses changes information focus.
  • Use sementara when two overt subjects perform independently unfolding actions.
  • Seraya and sembari share the simultaneity pattern but trend formal or literary.
  • Write the linker separately, keep verb affixes attached, and close an initial subordinate clause with a comma.
