Serial-Verb Sentences

Indonesian frequently places two verbal predicates next to each other without a conjunction or an infinitive marker. In pergi membeli makanan, one person goes and buys food as a single integrated outing; in duduk membaca, one person reads while sitting. English often inserts to, and, or while, but Indonesian can let the semantic relationship between the verbs do that work.

These sequences are written as separate words. They are not automatically compounds, and not every pair of neighboring verbs is a serial-verb construction.

What licenses a direct verb sequence?

A core serial sequence has three properties:

  1. the predicates share an understood subject or central participant;
  2. they describe one integrated activity, path, posture, phase, or purpose;
  3. no linker such as dan, lalu, or untuk is required between them.

Mira pergi membeli makanan untuk teman-temannya.

Mira went to buy food for her friends.

Pak Tono duduk membaca koran di teras.

Mr. Tono sits reading the newspaper on the porch.

Kami mulai bekerja sebelum matahari terbit.

We started working before sunrise.

In each sentence, the first verb narrows how the second event is understood. Mira is both the person going and the person buying; Pak Tono both sits and reads; kami supplies the shared subject of the phase change and the work.

πŸ’‘
Indonesian has no infinitive ending that identifies the second verb as subordinate. Shared reference and a conventional semantic relationship make the sequence possible.

Motion plus a following action

Motion verbs commonly precede an activity performed at the destination. Pergi membeli makanan is more tightly integrated than two independent events joined by β€œand.”

Sari pergi mengambil obat di apotek dekat terminal.

Sari went to pick up medicine at the pharmacy near the terminal.

Ayah keluar membeli air minum untuk perjalanan.

Dad went out to buy drinking water for the trip.

Dimas datang membawa dua kotak dokumen lama.

Dimas came bringing two boxes of old documents.

Mereka pulang mengambil payung yang tertinggal.

They went back home to get the umbrella they had left behind.

Nenek naik mengambil selimut dari kamar atas.

Grandmother went upstairs to get a blanket from the upstairs bedroom.

The second predicate retains whatever morphology its lexical and voice pattern requires: membeli, mengambil, membawa, memeriksa. Serial structure does not reduce every verb to its root.

Untuk is possible when the speaker wants to present the second event explicitly as a purpose, especially if the purpose is long or less immediately integrated.

Mira pergi ke kantor pajak untuk menanyakan prosedur pengembalian dana.

Mira went to the tax office to ask about the refund procedure.

Mira pergi menanyakan jadwal pelayanan di loket depan.

Mira went to ask about service hours at the front counter.

The first version highlights a planned purpose and includes a destination before untuk. The second sounds like one compact errand. Do not conclude that untuk is forbidden; the mistake is treating it as obligatory after every first verb.

Posture plus simultaneous activity

Posture verbs such as duduk, berdiri, and berbaring can introduce an activity carried out in that posture. The two predicates normally share a subject and no equivalent of English while is necessary.

Raka duduk membaca pesan di bangku halte.

Raka sits reading messages on the bus-stop bench.

Dua petugas berdiri mengawasi pintu masuk aula.

Two officers stand watching the entrance to the hall.

Lina berbaring mendengarkan podcast sebelum tidur.

Lina lies down listening to a podcast before sleeping.

Anak itu jongkok mengikat tali sepatunya.

The child squats tying a shoelace.

Kami duduk menunggu nomor antrean dipanggil.

We sat waiting for our queue number to be called.

The posture is not merely background location; it is predicated of the same participant throughout the activity. A separate sambil clause is also possible when simultaneity itself is emphasized:

Raka duduk sambil membaca pesan dari kantornya.

Raka sits while reading messages from his office.

The version with sambil overtly marks simultaneity between the activities. The direct sequence is more compact and often presents posture as the manner or setting of the main activity.

Phase verbs and aspect-like meanings

Phase verbs and other predicate-like words can mark the beginning, continuation, completion, or cessation of another activity. They resemble aspect markers semantically, but they retain their own distributional restrictions.

First elementCore meaningTypical sequence

Tim teknis mulai memeriksa jaringan setelah listrik menyala.

The technical team began checking the network after the electricity came back on.

Hujan terus turun sampai jalan utama tergenang.

The rain kept falling until the main road flooded.

Paman berhenti merokok setelah berbicara dengan dokternya.

Uncle stopped smoking after speaking with his doctor.

Kami selesai makan tepat sebelum toko itu tutup.

We finished eating just before the shop closed.

Bayi itu mulai tenang ketika mendengar suara ibunya.

The baby began to calm down on hearing its mother's voice.

The following predicate need not denote a deliberate action: mulai tenang and terus hujan can describe a state or process. What matters is a coherent phase relationship, not an English infinitive category. See the mulai verb family for its transitive and passive relatives.

Shared actors and subject control

In a straightforward serial sequence, one overt subject supplies the understood subject or central participant for both predicates.

Yusuf turun membuka pagar untuk tamunya.

Yusuf went downstairs and opened the gate for his guest.

Kami masuk mencari tempat duduk yang masih kosong.

We went inside to look for seats that were still empty.

Maya berdiri menjelaskan hasil survei kepada peserta.

Maya stood explaining the survey results to the participants.

Changing the understood actor normally requires a new clause or a construction that independently licenses it.

Yusuf turun, lalu adiknya membuka pagar.

Yusuf went downstairs, and then his younger sibling opened the gate.

Maya duduk sementara Rendi menjelaskan hasil survei.

Maya sat while Rendi explained the survey results.

Those examples are not core serial-verb sequences: each predicate has its own overt subject, so a linker marks the relationship.

Some adjacent verbs belong to complement constructions rather than serialization. In melihat Dodi keluar, the noun after melihat is the object of perception and the understood actor of keluar.

Saya melihat Dodi keluar dari ruang arsip.

I saw Dodi leave the records room.

Kami mendengar seseorang mengetuk pintu belakang.

We heard someone knock on the back door.

These sentences contain two event participants rather than one shared actor. Surface adjacency alone is not a sufficient diagnostic.

Serial verbs versus coordination

Coordination presents events as distinct steps; a serial sequence packages them as one integrated action or circumstance.

Tia bangun lalu membuka semua tirai.

Tia got up and then opened all the curtains.

Tia bangun membuka tirai karena kamar terasa gelap.

Tia got up to open the curtains because the room felt dark.

Reno berhenti dan berbicara dengan penjaga.

Reno stopped and spoke with the guard.

Reno berhenti berbicara ketika manajer masuk.

Reno stopped speaking when the manager entered.

The last pair shows why grouping matters. Berhenti dan berbicara coordinates stopping with speaking; berhenti berbicara means cease the activity of speaking. Spaces are identical, but semantics and the presence of dan create different structures.

Negation, aspect, and scope

A marker before the first predicate usually takes the whole integrated sequence in its scope. A marker directly before the second predicate can contrast that activity.

Rina tidak pergi membeli sayur karena pasar tutup.

Rina did not go buy vegetables because the market was closed.

Rina pergi bukan untuk membeli sayur, melainkan untuk menemui pedagangnya.

Rina went not to buy vegetables but to meet the seller.

Para pekerja sudah mulai memasang atap baru.

The workers have already begun installing the new roof.

Para pekerja mulai tidak memakai lift barang.

The workers began not using the freight elevator.

The last sentence is structurally possible but semantically specific: the new phase is one of non-use. Marker order is not free, because it changes which part of the sequence is negated or located in time.

Orthography and punctuation

Write each independent verb as a separate word: pergi membeli, duduk membaca, mulai bekerja. Attach real affixes and clitics within those words: membeli, membacanya, diperiksa, kubawa. Do not insert a comma between two tightly integrated predicates.

Dara datang mengantarkan berkas yang sudah ditandatanganinya.

Dara came to deliver the documents she had signed.

Kami duduk membacanya sampai perpustakaan tutup.

We sat reading it until the library closed.

A comma is appropriate when it separates full clauses or an initial setting, not because two verbs happen to be adjacent.

Common Mistakes

Inserting untuk after a phase verb

❌ Mereka mulai untuk membersihkan gudang pagi ini.

Incorrect β€” mulai takes the following predicate directly.

βœ… Mereka mulai membersihkan gudang pagi ini.

They began cleaning the storeroom this morning.

Writing separate verbs as a compound

❌ Sinta pergimembeli tiket di loket sebelah.

Incorrect spelling β€” pergi and membeli remain separate words.

βœ… Sinta pergi membeli tiket di loket sebelah.

Sinta went to buy a ticket at the counter next door.

Using the wrong meN- alternation

❌ Kami keluar menbeli sarapan untuk semua orang.

Incorrect formation β€” beli takes the actor-voice form membeli.

βœ… Kami keluar membeli sarapan untuk semua orang.

We went out to buy breakfast for everyone.

Inserting a comma inside one integrated sequence

❌ Lala duduk, menyusun foto-foto lama di lantai.

Incorrect intended grouping β€” no comma separates the shared-actor posture sequence.

βœ… Lala duduk menyusun foto-foto lama di lantai.

Lala sat arranging old photographs on the floor.

Assuming every adjacent verb has one actor

❌ Dalam contoh β€œSaya melihat Dodi keluar”, saya adalah pelaku keluar.

Incorrect analysis β€” in saya melihat Dodi keluar, Dodi is the one who leaves.

βœ… Dalam contoh β€œSaya melihat Dodi keluar”, Dodi adalah pelaku keluar.

In that sentence, Dodi is the one who leaves.

Key Takeaways

  • Motion, posture, and phase verbs can precede another predicate with no linker.
  • A core serial sequence normally has one shared subject or central participant and a tightly integrated semantic relationship.
  • Untuk, dan, lalu, and sambil are possible, but they create more explicit purpose, coordination, sequence, or simultaneity.
  • Neighboring verbs remain separate orthographic words and keep their required morphology.
  • Analyze meaning and participant sharing; spacing alone does not prove serialization.
