Serial Verb Constructions

Indonesian can place two predicates next to each other with no equivalent of English to, and, or while. In pergi membeli, one participant goes to buy; in duduk membaca, one participant reads while sitting. The verbs have no special nonfinite form. Event integration is encoded by adjacency, shared participants, and a conventional semantic relationship.

This page analyzes motion, direction, posture, manner, and result sequences, including the boundary between tight serialization and looser clause combinations. It leaves basic word-order drills, individual affix formation, and pragmatic particle meanings to other pages.

What makes a sequence serial?

A prototypical serial-verb construction has several properties at once:

  1. one subject or central participant links the predicates;
  2. the predicates describe one integrated activity, path, posture, manner, or outcome;
  3. the verbs share tense, aspect, and discourse setting unless a marker explicitly narrows its scope;
  4. there is no coordinator or subordinator between them.

Laras pergi membeli obat untuk ayahnya sebelum apotek tutup.

Laras went to buy medicine for her father before the pharmacy closed.

Dimas datang membawa peta lama yang ditemukan di loteng.

Dimas came bringing an old map found in the attic.

Ibu duduk membaca surat kabar sambil menunggu teh.

Mother sat reading the newspaper while waiting for tea.

The required patterns pergi membeli, datang membawa, and duduk membaca contain separate orthographic words. The second verb keeps normal Indonesian morphology: membeli and membawa retain actor-voice meN-.

💡
No infinitive ending identifies a “second verb” in Indonesian. Interpret the sequence by asking whether its participants, time frame, and purpose form one coherent event.

Motion and intended action

Motion verbs commonly introduce an action performed at the destination. The same actor controls both predicates.

Kami keluar mencari sarapan sebelum rapat dimulai.

We went out to look for breakfast before the meeting began.

Rina masuk mengambil jaket yang tertinggal di kamar.

Rina went inside to get the jacket left in the room.

Pak Hasan turun membuka pagar untuk tamunya.

Mr. Hasan went downstairs to open the gate for his guest.

Mereka pulang menjemput anak-anak sebelum hujan deras.

They went home to pick up the children before the heavy rain.

The first verb contributes path or direction; the second supplies the goal activity. The construction packages the movement and action as one trip. It does not simply list two equal events.

Untuk is also possible, but it makes purpose overt and can loosen the bond between movement and action.

Kami pergi ke kantor kelurahan untuk memperbarui kartu keluarga.

We went to the subdistrict office to update the family card.

Kami pergi memperbarui kartu keluarga di kantor kelurahan.

We went to update the family card at the subdistrict office.

The first gives the destination and then states its planned purpose. The second treats the whole errand compactly. Neither is inherently more grammatical; the packaging differs.

Datang membawa and path plus accompaniment

With datang membawa, arrival and carriage overlap: the carried object accompanies the actor along the path and is present at arrival.

Tamu itu datang membawa kue buatan sendiri.

The guest arrived carrying a homemade cake.

Petugas datang membawa dua tabung oksigen cadangan.

The officers arrived with two spare oxygen cylinders.

Nadia pulang membawa kabar baik dari rumah sakit.

Nadia came home bringing good news from the hospital.

English may translate the second predicate with “with,” a participle, or a coordinated verb. Indonesian syntax has not changed just because the best English phrasing changes.

Compare genuine sequence with coordination:

Nadia pulang dan membawa semua berkas ke rumah.

Nadia went home and took all the files with her.

Dan presents two coordinated predicates and can give membawa more independent assertion. Bare adjacency more tightly integrates what arrived with Nadia.

Posture plus simultaneous activity

Posture verbs often precede an activity performed in that posture. The shared subject continues through both predicates.

Kakek berdiri mengamati kapal-kapal dari ujung dermaga.

Grandfather stood watching the ships from the end of the pier.

Dua anak jongkok menggambar dengan kapur di trotoar.

Two children squatted drawing with chalk on the pavement.

Sari berbaring mendengarkan hujan di atap seng.

Sari lay listening to the rain on the metal roof.

Kami duduk menunggu hasil pemeriksaan di lorong.

We sat waiting for the test results in the corridor.

The posture can be interpreted as manner or as the physical setting of the activity. Sambil explicitly coordinates simultaneity and gives the two predicates more equal event status.

Kakek berdiri sambil melambaikan tangan kepada penumpang kapal.

Grandfather stood while waving to the ship's passengers.

Do not insert sambil mechanically. Direct berdiri mengamati is especially natural when the posture frames the main activity rather than competing with it.

Manner and direction sequences

Some movement sequences combine manner with path or endpoint. Indonesian can express how someone moves and where that movement leads without adding a conjunction.

Anak-anak berlari keluar ketika bel berbunyi.

The children ran outside when the bell rang.

Dia berjalan pulang sendirian setelah acara selesai.

He or she walked home alone after the event ended.

Kucing itu melompat naik ke lemari yang tinggi.

The cat jumped up onto the tall cupboard.

Para pendaki merangkak masuk melalui celah sempit.

The hikers crawled in through a narrow gap.

Here berlari, berjalan, melompat, and merangkak contribute manner; keluar, pulang, naik, and masuk contribute direction or endpoint. Not every imaginable pair is conventional. Lexical naturalness must be learned from use, and awkward combinations should be expanded with a preposition or separate clause.

Results and endpoint clauses

An outcome can be linked with sampai “until/to the point that.” The required sequence makan sampai kenyang presents eating that reaches the state of fullness.

Kami makan sampai kenyang di rumah bibi.

We ate until we were full at our aunt's house.

Anak itu berlari sampai kehabisan napas.

The child ran until out of breath.

Mereka bekerja sampai larut demi menyelesaikan laporan.

They worked until late to finish the report.

Air dipanaskan sampai mendidih sebelum teh dimasukkan.

The water is heated until boiling before the tea is added.

These are looser than bare motion or posture serialization because sampai overtly marks an endpoint relation. The result may still share the main participant—kami become full, anak itu becomes breathless—or describe the endpoint of a process.

An unmarked result sequence is possible in lexicalized or highly conventional combinations, but Indonesian does not have a completely productive English-style resultative template. Do not invent sequences such as a literal calque of “hammer the metal flat”; use an established causative or an explicit result clause.

Shared arguments and participant structure

In the most transparent serial construction, one subject supplies the actor of both verbs.

Mira naik memeriksa tangki air di atap.

Mira went up to inspect the water tank on the roof.

Kami mampir membeli buah untuk perjalanan pulang.

We stopped by to buy fruit for the trip home.

The object usually belongs to the predicate that selects it: tangki air is object of memeriksa, and buah is object of membeli. The motion verb contributes path without taking that object.

Adjacent verbs can nevertheless have different actors in complement constructions. Those should not be forced into the shared-actor prototype.

Saya melihat Rudi menyeberang jalan dengan tergesa-gesa.

I saw Rudi cross the road in a hurry.

Kami mendengar bayi menangis dari kamar sebelah.

We heard a baby crying in the next room.

In the first, saya sees but Rudi crosses; in the second, kami hear but bayi cries. Perception licenses the embedded participant. Surface adjacency alone therefore does not prove serial structure.

💡
Track each argument verb by verb. Shared time and adjacency do not erase the fact that melihat has an experiencer and menyeberang has its own actor.

Tight versus loose serialization

Tight serialization has no pause or linker and normally falls under one aspect or negation frame.

Rina tidak pergi membeli sayur karena pasarnya tutup.

Rina did not go buy vegetables because the market was closed.

Para teknisi sudah datang membawa peralatan pengganti.

The technicians have arrived bringing replacement equipment.

In the first, tidak denies the integrated trip. In the second, sudah locates arrival-with-equipment as completed. A marker beside the second predicate can create narrower contrast.

Rina pergi tanpa membawa payung meskipun langit gelap.

Rina went without taking an umbrella even though the sky was dark.

Loose sequencing uses a linker, a pause, a new subject, or separately located events.

Rina pergi ke pasar, lalu Dodi membeli sayur di warung.

Rina went to the market, and then Dodi bought vegetables at a stall.

Bima duduk, kemudian petugas menjelaskan prosedurnya.

Bima sat down, and then the officer explained the procedure.

The comma reflects the clause boundary and subject switch. Do not place a comma inside tight pergi membeli or duduk membaca.

Linkers change the relation

FormRelation made explicit
bare adjacencyintegrated event, relation inferred
untukplanned purpose
danequal coordination
lalu/kemudiantemporal sequence
sambilexplicit simultaneity
sampaiendpoint or result

The serial-sentence guide introduces the everyday patterns; this page's distinction is structural. Linkers are meaningful choices, not filler words required between all verbs.

Common Mistakes

1. Inserting dan between every adjacent verb

❌ Tika pergi dan membeli obat di apotek sebelum tutup.

Mispackaged for one integrated errand — dan presents going and buying as separate assertions.

✅ Tika pergi membeli obat untuk neneknya sebelum sore.

Tika went to buy medicine for her grandmother before evening.

2. Treating untuk as an infinitive marker after posture verbs

❌ Pak Amir duduk untuk membaca koran setiap pagi.

Awkward for simultaneous posture and activity — untuk turns reading into an explicit purpose.

✅ Pak Amir duduk membaca koran di beranda setiap pagi.

Mr. Amir sits reading the newspaper on the veranda every morning.

3. Joining the verbs orthographically

❌ Mereka datangmembawa makanan untuk seluruh tim.

Incorrect spelling — independent verbs remain separate words.

✅ Mereka datang membawa makanan hangat untuk seluruh tim.

They arrived bringing hot food for the whole team.

4. Assuming adjacent verbs always share an actor

❌ Dalam kalimat saya melihat Dina berlari, saya yang berlari.

Incorrect analysis — Dina is the actor of berlari.

✅ Dalam kalimat saya melihat Dina berlari, Dina yang berlari.

In saya melihat Dina berlari, Dina is the one who runs.

5. Inserting a comma inside a tight sequence

❌ Adik berdiri, menunggu bus di depan sekolah.

Incorrect for one integrated posture sequence — the comma creates an unsupported boundary.

✅ Adik berdiri menunggu bus di depan sekolah sejak tadi.

My younger sibling has been standing waiting for the bus outside school.

Key Takeaways

  • Bare adjacency can integrate motion, direction, posture, manner, and activity without a special infinitive form.
  • A prototypical serial sequence shares a subject, time frame, and central event.
  • Dan, untuk, sambil, lalu, and sampai overtly create different semantic and clause relations.
  • The second verb remains a separate word and keeps its required affixes and clitics.
  • Participant sharing and scope distinguish tight serialization from loose sequences and embedded complements.
