mulai and memulai: Verb Family and Usage

Mulai can itself predicate the onset of an event: kelas mulai means the class begins. It can also introduce a following activity: mulai bekerja. Actor-voice memulai instead foregrounds an initiator who starts a project, meeting, job, or other object; passive dimulai returns that initiated event to subject position.

No person or tense endings

Neither mulai nor memulai changes with person, number, or tense. Separate time and aspect words locate the onset.

Saya memulai pekerjaan itu setelah semua data terkumpul.

I started that work after all the data had been collected.

Tadi dia memulai pekerjaan tanpa membaca petunjuknya.

Earlier she started the work without reading the instructions.

Besok kami akan memulai pekerjaan sebelum matahari terbit.

Tomorrow we will start work before sunrise.

English start, starts, and started do not require Indonesian tense endings. Mulai is not an infinitive waiting to be conjugated.

mulai with an event subject: onset without an initiator

When an event, period, condition, or process is the subject, mulai means begin or start. The sentence simply locates its onset; it need not name who caused it.

Kelas mulai tepat pukul delapan pagi.

Class starts at exactly eight in the morning.

Musim hujan biasanya mulai pada bulan November.

The rainy season usually begins in November.

Pertunjukan mulai setelah semua tamu duduk.

The performance begins after all guests are seated.

Rasa sakit mulai ketika ia mencoba berdiri.

The pain began when she tried to stand.

Perubahan kecil itu mulai dari kebiasaan sehari-hari.

That small change begins with everyday habits.

Mulai dari identifies a starting point in time, space, sequence, or reasoning. This is an established prepositional combination, not a transitive object frame.

With kelas mulai, the event itself is the subject and onset is the whole assertion. No initiating actor has been grammatically introduced.

mulai + predicate: enter an activity or state

Before another predicate, mulai marks the beginning of that action or state. Indonesian does not require a counterpart of English to or -ing.

Anak itu mulai berjalan tanpa berpegangan.

The child is beginning to walk without holding on.

Hujan mulai turun saat kami meninggalkan pasar.

Rain began to fall as we left the market.

Saya mulai memahami alasan keputusan tersebut.

I am beginning to understand the reason for that decision.

Daun-daun mulai menguning pada akhir musim kemarau.

The leaves begin to turn yellow at the end of the dry season.

Mereka mulai bekerja segera setelah sarapan.

They start working immediately after breakfast.

The subject of mulai is also understood as the subject of the following predicate: the child walks, I understand, and they work.

Bare transitive mulai

Bare mulai can also take an object, especially in commands, procedural language, headlines, and conversation. It is natural when the instruction itself supplies the initiator.

Mulai rapat sekarang agar kita selesai sebelum siang.

Start the meeting now so that we finish before noon.

Mari mulai pembahasan dari poin yang paling mendesak.

Let's start the discussion with the most urgent point.

Proyek ini kita mulai dari survei lapangan.

We are starting this project with a field survey.

In careful actor-oriented prose with an overt initiator, memulai makes the transitive structure more explicit.

memulai: foreground the initiator

Memulai is active and transitive. Its subject intentionally or causally initiates the following event, task, period, or relationship.

Ketua panitia memulai rapat dengan laporan singkat.

The committee chair starts the meeting with a brief report.

Pemerintah memulai program vaksinasi di tiga kabupaten.

The government starts a vaccination program in three regencies. (formal)

Kami memulai perjalanan sebelum jalan raya ramai.

We begin the journey before the highway gets busy.

Ia memulai percakapan dengan menanyakan kabar keluarga saya.

She starts the conversation by asking how my family is.

Perusahaan itu memulai kegiatan operasionalnya pada tahun 1998.

The company began its operations in 1998. (formal)

Compare onset and initiator:

Rapat mulai setelah makan siang.

The meeting starts after lunch.

Direktur memulai rapat setelah makan siang.

The director starts the meeting after lunch.

The first says when the meeting begins. The second adds a director who initiates it and makes rapat an object.

dimulai: the initiated event as subject

Dimulai is the passive counterpart of memulai. It makes the event or process central while omitting or backgrounding its initiator. This is especially frequent in schedules, announcements, procedures, and reports.

Rapat dimulai pukul sembilan tanpa menunggu direktur.

The meeting started at nine without waiting for the director.

Pembangunan jembatan dimulai oleh pemerintah daerah tahun lalu.

The regional government began construction of the bridge last year. (formal)

Pendaftaran dimulai pada hari Senin dan ditutup hari Jumat.

Registration begins on Monday and closes on Friday.

Upacara akan dimulai setelah tamu kehormatan tiba.

The ceremony will begin after the guest of honor arrives.

Program yang dimulai di desa itu kini mencakup lima kecamatan.

The program started in that village now covers five districts.

Write passive di- solid in dimulai and locative di separately in di desa. Although rapat mulai and rapat dimulai can describe the same onset, dimulai evokes an initiating action and is especially natural in institutional scheduling.

permulaan and awal

Both nouns can mean beginning, but their distribution differs. Awal is the broad, very frequent neutral choice for an initial time, position, or portion: awal bulan, dari awal, bagian awal. Permulaan packages the beginning or commencement as a bounded phase and often sounds more formal, reflective, or literary.

The per-...-an noun guide explains the wider formation pattern; here, learn the lexical contrast with awal.

Kami pindah ke rumah ini pada awal tahun.

We moved into this house at the beginning of the year.

Bacalah bagian awal laporan sebelum rapat.

Read the opening part of the report before the meeting.

Pada permulaan cerita, tokoh utama tinggal sendirian.

At the beginning of the story, the main character lives alone. (literary)

Kesalahan pada permulaan proses memengaruhi hasil akhir.

An error at the start of the process affects the final result. (formal)

Dari awal saya sudah menjelaskan batas waktunya.

I explained the deadline from the outset.

There is genuine overlap. Awal cerita and permulaan cerita are both grammatical; awal is usually more compact and everyday, while permulaan gives the onset more nominal weight.

Fixed combinations

Mula-mula saya ragu, tetapi akhirnya saya setuju.

At first I hesitated, but eventually I agreed.

Perselisihan itu bermula dari kesalahpahaman kecil.

The dispute began with a small misunderstanding.

Mula-mula is a fixed reduplicated adverb meaning β€œat first” and uses a hyphen. Bermula dari is an established, somewhat more narrative alternative meaning originate or begin from.

Common Mistakes

Giving an event subject an object-taking verb without an initiator

❌ Kelas memulai pukul delapan pagi.

Incorrect β€” the class begins; it is not initiating an unstated object.

βœ… Kelas mulai pukul delapan pagi.

Class starts at eight in the morning.

Inserting untuk before the following activity

❌ Anak itu mulai untuk berjalan sendiri.

Incorrect β€” mulai takes the following predicate directly.

βœ… Anak itu mulai berjalan sendiri.

The child begins walking independently.

Creating memulaikan

❌ Ketua memulaikan rapat dengan doa singkat.

Incorrect family form β€” the ordinary transitive actor-voice verb is memulai.

βœ… Ketua memulai rapat dengan doa singkat.

The chair starts the meeting with a short prayer.

Separating passive di-

❌ Pertunjukan akan di mulai setelah makan malam.

Incorrect spelling β€” passive di- attaches to the verb.

βœ… Pertunjukan akan dimulai setelah makan malam.

The performance will begin after dinner.

Adding an English past ending

❌ Kemarin kelas mulai-ed terlambat.

Incorrect β€” Indonesian predicates never take English tense endings.

βœ… Kemarin kelas mulai terlambat.

Yesterday class started late.

Key Takeaways

  • Mulai predicates onset with an event subject or introduces a following activity directly.
  • Memulai foregrounds an initiator and selects the initiated event as object; dimulai makes that event passive subject.
  • Awal is the broad everyday noun/modifier for an initial point; permulaan often gives the commencement more formal or literary weight.
  • Aspect and time words remain separate; actual derivatives are solid, while mula-mula uses standard reduplication hyphenation.
