The bantu family is morphologically regular but socially instructive. Membantu directly selects the person, group, or activity receiving help; dibantu makes that participant central, and bantuan names assistance or an aid item. Pembantu is transparently derived as βhelper,β yet its standalone everyday meaning has become associated with domestic service and can carry unwanted social hierarchy.
No agreement and no tense endings
Membantu stays unchanged across subjects and times. Use time expressions and separate aspect or modal words.
| Context | Indonesian | Cue |
|---|---|---|
| I, now | saya membantu Rina | context |
| she, earlier | tadi dia membantu Rina | tadi |
| they, ongoing | mereka sedang membantu Rina | sedang |
| we, tomorrow | besok kami akan membantu Rina | besok, akan |
Saya membantu Rina memindahkan meja ke ruang depan.
I help Rina move the table to the front room.
Tadi dia membantu Rina menyiapkan dokumen rapat.
Earlier she helped Rina prepare the meeting documents.
Besok kami akan membantu Rina membersihkan gudang.
Tomorrow we will help Rina clean the storeroom.
English help, helps, and helped do not require different Indonesian endings. Bare bantu is not an infinitive, and membantu is not a conjugated tense form.
Bare bantu: commands and object voice
Use bantu in direct requests and commands. It also appears after a first- or second-person actor when the helped participant or task has been placed first in object voice.
Bantu saya mengangkat kotak ini, ya.
Help me lift this box, please. (informal)
Tolong bantu pelanggan itu mencari ukuran yang tepat.
Please help that customer find the right size.
Pekerjaan ini akan saya bantu selesaikan setelah makan siang.
I will help complete this work after lunch.
Masalah yang kamu bantu selesaikan ternyata cukup rumit.
The problem you helped solve turned out to be quite complicated.
Actor-first bare saya bantu is also common in conversation (informal). Careful actor-oriented writing normally uses saya membantu. The alternation reflects voice and register, not time.
membantu + person or organization
Membantu is transitive. A person or organization receiving help normally follows directly, without kepada. The kind of help can remain implicit.
Relawan membantu warga yang rumahnya terkena banjir.
Volunteers help residents whose homes were flooded.
Petugas bandara membantu penumpang lanjut usia.
Airport staff help elderly passengers.
Program ini membantu usaha kecil di daerah terpencil.
This program helps small businesses in remote areas.
Terima kasih sudah membantu kami selama proses pindahan.
Thank you for helping us during the move.
English optionally uses βhelp to do.β Indonesian typically places the assisted person and then the action directly: membantu saya mengangkat, not an infinitive construction.
Perawat membantu pasien itu duduk di tepi tempat tidur.
The nurse helps the patient sit on the edge of the bed.
Kakak membantu adiknya memahami soal matematika.
The older sibling helps the younger one understand the math problem.
The sequence contains two understood actor relations: the nurse helps, while the patient is the one who sits; the older sibling helps, while the younger one understands.
membantu + task, process, or outcome
The direct object can also be an activity, project, process, or affected outcome. In this frame, no separate human beneficiary has to be stated.
Musik pelan membantu konsentrasi saya saat membaca.
Soft music helps my concentration while I read.
Aplikasi itu membantu pengelolaan jadwal harian.
The application assists with managing the daily schedule.
Tidur yang cukup membantu mempercepat pemulihan.
Enough sleep helps speed recovery.
Saya datang lebih awal untuk membantu persiapan acara.
I came early to help with event preparations.
Membantu pekerjaan can mean assist with work, while membantu pekerja means help the worker. English βhelp withβ often tempts learners to add a preposition, but Indonesian can make the task a direct object.
dibantu: the helped participant as subject
Dibantu is the passive counterpart. It makes the person, group, task, or process receiving assistance the starting point; the helper may follow or appear after oleh.
Saya dibantu teman sekamar saat membawa koper.
My roommate helped me while I was carrying the suitcase.
Warga terdampak dibantu oleh relawan dari beberapa kota.
Affected residents are helped by volunteers from several cities.
Pengisian formulir dibantu oleh petugas di meja depan.
The form-filling process is assisted by the officer at the front desk.
Pasien itu harus dibantu berdiri setelah operasi.
That patient must be helped to stand after surgery.
Mahasiswa yang dibantu di perpustakaan itu akhirnya menemukan bukunya.
The student helped at the library finally found her book.
Write passive di- solid in dibantu. The last example contrasts it with separate locative di perpustakaan.
bantuan: assistance or something supplied as aid
Bantuan is a noun. It can be uncountable assistance, a particular contribution, or material aid supplied by an institution. Possessors and source phrases identify the helper.
Bantuan pemerintah belum mencapai semua desa terpencil.
Government aid has not yet reached every remote village.
Kami membutuhkan bantuan untuk memperbaiki atap sekolah.
We need help repairing the school roof.
Terima kasih atas bantuan Anda selama proses pendaftaran.
Thank you for your assistance during the registration process. (formal)
Truk pertama membawa bantuan makanan dan obat-obatan.
The first truck carries food and medical aid.
Ia mengajukan permohonan bantuan hukum.
She applies for legal aid. (formal)
Bantuan sosial, bantuan hukum, bantuan pemerintah, and minta bantuan are established combinations. The noun is not interchangeable with verbal membantu. The broader contrast between event nouns and helper nouns appears in the word-formation guide.
pembantu: transparent form, socially charged meaning
Morphologically, pembantu means a person or thing that helps. In compounds it can retain a neutral supporting-role meaning, although modern job titles often prefer asisten.
Dalam dokumen lama, jabatan itu disebut pembantu peneliti; sekarang lembaga tersebut memakai istilah asisten peneliti.
The old document uses the term pembantu peneliti for the position; the institution now uses asisten peneliti.
Kata kerja bantu muncul sebelum predikat utama.
An auxiliary verb appears before the main predicate. (academic)
Standalone pembantu has long been used for a household domestic worker (informal). Many speakers now hear it as status-laden or demeaning because it reduces a profession to βthe helper.β It is not automatically a slur, and some people still use it neutrally, but a respectful contemporary guide must state the social risk.
Dalam novel lama itu, tokoh utama bekerja sebagai pembantu di rumah saudagar.
In that old novel, the main character works as a domestic servant in a merchant's house. (literary)
Use pekerja rumah tangga (PRT) in labor, legal, and rights contexts (formal). Asisten rumah tangga (ART) is a common polite occupational label in everyday and employment contexts.
Pekerja rumah tangga berhak atas kondisi kerja yang aman.
Domestic workers have the right to safe working conditions. (formal)
Keluarga itu sedang mencari asisten rumah tangga paruh waktu.
That family is looking for a part-time household assistant.
Dalam dokumen ini, istilah pekerja rumah tangga digunakan secara konsisten.
This document uses the term domestic worker consistently. (formal)
This is the family's distinguishing lesson: regular morphology does not guarantee socially neutral meaning. Lexical history and power relations can reshape a transparent derivative.
Fixed combinations and register
Tim medis memberikan pertolongan pertama sebelum ambulans tiba.
The medical team provides first aid before the ambulance arrives.
Kalau butuh bantuan, jangan ragu menghubungi saya.
If you need help, do not hesitate to contact me.
For an emergency rescue, menolong/pertolongan can be more specific than membantu/bantuan. Membantu covers general assistance; menolong often highlights relieving someone from danger or difficulty. This division is useful but not absolute, so learn the common collocations pertolongan pertama and bantuan pemerintah.
Common Mistakes
Adding kepada before the helped person
β Relawan membantu kepada warga yang kehilangan rumah.
Incorrect β the person helped is the direct object and needs no kepada.
β Relawan membantu warga yang kehilangan rumah.
Volunteers help residents who lost their homes.
Using the noun as a predicate
β Saya bantuan teman memindahkan lemari.
Incorrect β bantuan is a noun, not the actor-voice verb.
β Saya membantu teman memindahkan lemari.
I help a friend move a wardrobe.
Separating passive di-
β Pasien itu di bantu berdiri oleh perawat.
Incorrect spelling β passive di- attaches to the verb.
β Pasien itu dibantu berdiri oleh perawat.
The nurse helps that patient stand.
Assuming pembantu is always socially neutral
β Kantor itu menyebut semua pekerja rumah tangga sebagai pembantu tanpa menanyakan pilihan mereka.
Socially insensitive β standalone pembantu can sound status-laden or demeaning.
β Kantor itu menggunakan istilah pekerja rumah tangga dalam dokumen resmi.
That office uses the term domestic worker in official documents. (formal)
Adding an English past ending
β Kemarin mereka membantu-ed kami sampai malam.
Incorrect β Indonesian verbs never take English tense endings.
β Kemarin mereka membantu kami sampai malam.
Yesterday they helped us until evening.
