Indonesian geography makes three basic prepositions immediately useful: di places something, ke gives its destination, and dari gives its source. In an archipelagic country, a routine itinerary repeatedly moves from a city, across a strait or sea, to another island or province. Geography therefore turns an abstract preposition contrast into a visible source–path–goal system.
This page uses current official spellings and administrative terminology without becoming a tourist guide or political history. The 2025 national-map release from Badan Informasi Geospasial records 38 provinces; BIG also describes Indonesia as an archipelagic state composed of 17,380 islands. Those totals can be updated as boundaries and geospatial verification change, but the grammar below does not depend on one frozen count.
Indonesia and place names need no article
Indonesia, Jakarta, Jawa, Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Bali, Maluku, and Papua are proper names. Indonesian has no obligatory equivalent of English the before them.
Indonesia consists of interconnected land and sea areas.
Jakarta berada di bagian barat laut Pulau Jawa.
Jakarta is in the northwestern part of Java.
Bali terletak di sebelah timur Jawa.
Bali lies east of Java.
Do not add itu as an article. Indonesia itu can be grammatical when it means “that Indonesia” or when itu marks a discourse topic, but it is not the neutral form of the country name.
Di locates; ke gives a destination; dari gives a source
The place name remains unchanged. The preposition tells the reader how that place participates in the event.
| Role | Preposition | Question | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| location | di | di mana? | tinggal di Makassar |
| goal | ke | ke mana? | berangkat ke Makassar |
| source | dari | dari mana? | datang dari Makassar |
Rina sekarang bekerja di Makassar, Sulawesi Selatan.
Rina now works in Makassar, South Sulawesi.
Tomorrow Rina is leaving for Makassar to lead a training session.
Rina baru kembali dari Makassar tadi malam.
Rina just returned from Makassar last night.
English in/to/from provides a rough parallel, but Indonesian di never marks the goal of ordinary motion. The verb does not repair a wrong preposition: pergi di Bali means being at Bali while going somewhere in context, not “go to Bali.”
We met in Denpasar before continuing the journey to Java.
The ship departed from Bali for a port in East Java.
Menuju means “heading toward” and can introduce a goal without ke. Do not automatically stack them as menuju ke in careful concise prose, although that sequence occurs in actual usage.
Read a route as source → goal → location
Routes reveal why the same place can take different prepositions from one clause to the next.
The work trip began in Jakarta and then continued to Medan on Sumatra.
From Medan, the team returned to Jakarta before leaving for Balikpapan in Kalimantan.
After a meeting in Balikpapan, they flew to Makassar on Sulawesi.
From Makassar, some team members headed to Denpasar in Bali.
The next route took them from Bali to Ambon in Maluku.
The trip ended in Jayapura, Papua, after the team arrived from Ambon.
A city can be the goal while its island or province is a containing location.
Island, province, city, and region are different levels
Pulau means an island, provinsi an administrative province, kota a city or city-level municipality, and wilayah a general area or region. The name alone may be ambiguous when several levels share related labels.
Pulau Jawa terbagi ke dalam beberapa provinsi.
The island of Java is divided among several provinces.
Bandung berada di Provinsi Jawa Barat.
Bandung is in West Java Province.
Surabaya is a city on the northern coast of East Java.
Capitalize a generic geographical element when it forms part of a proper name: Pulau Jawa, Laut Sulawesi, Selat Makassar, Provinsi Maluku. Use lowercase for a mere description: pulau itu, laut tersebut, provinsi ini.
Some familiar names work at more than one level:
- Bali can denote the island or the province; context often makes the distinction harmless.
- Maluku can denote a broad island region or Provinsi Maluku. Provinsi Maluku Utara is a separate province.
- Papua can denote a broad Indonesian region, the island in Indonesian usage, or Provinsi Papua. These are not coterminous.
- Kalimantan may denote the island in Indonesian geographical usage or the Indonesian region made up of several provinces.
The activity took place in Maluku Province, not throughout the Maluku Islands.
The study compares several cities in the Papua region.
Sampel dikumpulkan di Provinsi Papua dan Provinsi Papua Barat.
Samples were collected in Papua Province and West Papua Province.
When administrative precision matters, write the level. Di Papua may be enough in conversation; a report may need di Provinsi Papua or di wilayah Papua.
Archipelagic vocabulary
Negara kepulauan is an archipelagic state. Kepulauan can name an island group, while pulau names one island. Other high-frequency terms describe water, coast, and interior.
| Term | Meaning | Example phrase |
|---|---|---|
| kepulauan | archipelago/island group | Kepulauan Maluku |
| pulau | island | Pulau Sulawesi |
| selat | strait | Selat Makassar |
| laut | sea | Laut Jawa |
| pesisir | coast/coastal area | pesisir utara |
| pedalaman | interior/inland area | pedalaman Kalimantan |
| daratan | landmass/mainland | daratan utama |
Kapal penelitian melintasi Laut Jawa sebelum memasuki Selat Makassar.
The research vessel crossed the Java Sea before entering the Makassar Strait.
The health-care team travels from a coastal city to villages in inland Kalimantan.
Inter-island shipping requires clear origin and destination information.
Bound antar- attaches to a common-noun base: antarpulau, not antar pulau. This is a spelling point, not a new geographical level.
Cardinal directions and official names
The basic directions are utara, selatan, timur, barat. Combinations include timur laut, tenggara, barat daya, and barat laut. In descriptive phrases they are lowercase.
From Java, the ship moved east toward Bali.
Kota itu terletak di sebelah selatan pegunungan.
The city lies south of the mountain range.
Rombongan datang dari arah barat laut setelah cuaca membaik.
The group came from the northwest after the weather improved.
Capitalize a direction word when it is part of an official proper name: Jawa Barat, Sulawesi Selatan, Maluku Utara, Papua Barat Daya. The capital does not mean that every mention of a direction becomes a province.
Manado berada di Provinsi Sulawesi Utara.
Manado is in North Sulawesi Province.
Mereka bergerak ke utara setelah meninggalkan Sulawesi Selatan.
They traveled north after leaving South Sulawesi.
The first Utara belongs to a province name; the second utara is a direction.
Names shared across national standards
Neighboring languages and international English do not always use the same geographical labels. Indonesian writes Papua Nugini for the neighboring country called Papua New Guinea in English. The island shared by Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei is widely called Borneo in English; Indonesian geographical usage commonly uses Kalimantan, while Kalimantan also refers specifically to the Indonesian part in many contexts.
Wilayah Papua di Indonesia berbatasan darat dengan Papua Nugini.
Indonesia's Papua region has a land border with Papua New Guinea.
In an English-language report, the name Borneo may appear where an Indonesian text uses Kalimantan.
Do not silently Indonesianize a quotation or official foreign name. Label the language or standard when the difference matters. Conversely, in an Indonesian sentence use the established Indonesian form Papua Nugini, not an unmarked English insertion.
Common Mistakes
1. Adding an article-like demonstrative
Incorrect—itu cannot serve as an English-style article before Sulawesi.
They will work in Sulawesi for two months.
2. Using di for a destination
❌ Besok kami berangkat di Bali dari Surabaya.
Incorrect destination marking—di locates; ke marks the goal.
✅ Besok kami berangkat dari Surabaya ke Bali.
Tomorrow we leave Surabaya for Bali.
3. Confusing an island region with one province
❌ Maluku selalu berarti hanya Provinsi Maluku dalam setiap konteks.
Incorrect—Maluku can name a wider archipelagic region as well as a province.
That official report limits its data to Maluku Province.
4. Capitalizing an ordinary direction
Incorrect—timur is lowercase when it is merely a direction.
After arriving in Java, they traveled east.
5. Treating Papua as the neighboring country's full name
❌ Kota itu berada di negara Papua.
Incorrect Indonesian country name—the neighboring state is Papua Nugini.
The city is in Papua New Guinea, near the Indonesian border.
Key Takeaways
- Place names take no article: Indonesia, Jakarta, Jawa, Sumatra, Bali.
- Use di for location, ke for destination, and dari for source.
- Add Pulau, Provinsi, Kota, Kepulauan, or wilayah when geographical level matters.
- Lowercase ordinary directions but capitalize them inside official names: ke utara, Sulawesi Utara.
- Label neighboring or English standards such as Borneo and Papua New Guinea instead of silently mixing them into Indonesian prose.
