Ambil begins with physically taking, collecting, or selecting something, but it also forms a dense network of abstract combinations: mengambil keputusan “make a decision,” mengambil bagian “take part,” mengambil alih “take over,” and mengambil risiko “take a risk.” These combinations reveal which abstract situations Indonesian conventionally presents as taking or assuming something.
This page teaches that phraseology, not every dictionary sense or the general verb paradigm. The ambil verb-family guide covers voice, benefactive mengambilkan, and derived nouns in detail.
