जन्म लेना janm lenā: to be born

जन्म लेना is a noun–verb predicate meaning “be born” or “come into existence.” Literally it combines जन्म “birth” with लेना “take,” but it functions as one conventional predicate; the broader behavior of its verbal member is set out in the लेना reference. English expresses birth with a passive form; Hindi does not use a passive of “bear” here and should not be calqued word for word.

Noun plus लेना

जन्म remains unchanged, while लेना supplies the full paradigm.

समुद्री कछुए अंडों से जन्म लेते हैं।

samudrī kachue aṇḍoṃ se janm lete haiṃ.

Sea turtles are born from eggs.

एक नई राजनीतिक चेतना धीरे-धीरे जन्म ले रही थी।

ek naī rājnītik cetnā dhīre-dhīre janm le rahī thī.

A new political awareness was gradually taking shape.

The second example extends birth to an abstract entity coming into existence. This is neutral formal prose, not a literal biological claim.

Birth time, place, and family

Place takes में or another location phrase, time uses ordinary temporal expressions, and family or social setting often takes में. Origin can take से where semantically appropriate.

मेरे दादा ने एक छोटे पहाड़ी गाँव में जन्म लिया।

mere dādā ne ek choṭe pahāṛī gā̃v meṃ janm liyā.

My grandfather was born in a small mountain village. (honorific)

इस लेखक ने उन्नीस सौ अस्सी में जन्म लिया।

is lekhak ne unnīs sau assī meṃ janm liyā.

This writer was born in 1980.

In biographies, का जन्म होना is often even more idiomatic: लेखक का जन्म 1980 में हुआ. The two constructions package participants differently.

💡
Hindi offers two native patterns: उन्होंने जन्म लिया with ने and उनका जन्म हुआ with a genitive possessor. Neither is an English-style passive.

Perfective alignment: लिया, not a passive

Because लेना is the light verb, the canonical perfective is X ने जन्म लिया. The subject takes ने, while fixed masculine जन्म supports लिया. Gender does not change it to जन्म ली.

कवयित्री ने इसी शहर में जन्म लिया।

kavayitrī ne isī śahar meṃ janm liyā.

The poet was born in this very city.

Compare कवयित्री का जन्म इसी शहर में हुआ, where जन्म is the subject of होना and no ने appears. Both are grammatical; the लेना construction foregrounds the person as participant, while जन्म होना foregrounds the birth event.

Future, subjunctive, and aspect

तुमजन्म लोजन्म लोगेजन्म लोगी

Future and subjunctive forms are common in biological description, philosophy, religion, prediction, and figurative talk about ideas. First- and second-person forms are unusual in ordinary factual speech because birth is not controlled by the subject.

कौन जाने, अगले जन्म में हम कहाँ जन्म लेंगे।

kaun jāne, agle janm meṃ ham kahā̃ janm leṅge.

Who knows where we will be born in the next life.

कभी-कभी संकट से ही नया विचार जन्म लेता है।

kabhī-kabhī saṅkaṭ se hī nayā vicār janm letā hai.

Sometimes a new idea is born only from a crisis.

The progressive is marked for an actual human birth but natural for processes of emergence: नई व्यवस्था जन्म ले रही है.

Imperative and participial limits

Direct imperatives जन्म ले/लो/लीजिए are morphologically possible but pragmatically unavailable as ordinary instructions, since birth is non-volitional. They can occur in religious, mythological, poetic, or dramatic address (literary/religious).

Participles are much more useful: जन्म लेने वाला बच्चा, जन्म लेकर, जन्म लिया हुआ. Biographical prose often prefers a finite relative clause over the heavy resultative participle.

भारत में जन्म लेकर वह किशोरावस्था में विदेश चली गई।

bhārat meṃ janm lekar vah kiśorāvasthā meṃ videś calī gaī.

Born in India, she moved abroad in adolescence.

Related predicates and causation

पैदा होना is a very common neutral counterpart for “be born” and can also mean arise/be produced. जन्म होना is common in biographical statements. To say “give birth,” Hindi uses जन्म देना or everyday बच्चे को जन्म देना; this is not a passive transformation of जन्म लेना.

अस्पताल में उसने स्वस्थ बच्ची को जन्म दिया।

aspatāl meṃ usne svasth baccī ko janm diyā.

She gave birth to a healthy baby girl in the hospital.

The newborn takes को, and fixed जन्म supports default masculine singular दिया. There is no productive causative जन्म लिवाना for ordinary “cause to be born.” Medical or arranged contexts require more specific expressions.

An idiomatic abstract extension is आंदोलन का जन्म लेना “a movement comes into being.”

इसी बहस से एक नए आंदोलन ने जन्म लिया।

isī bahas se ek nae āndolan ne janm liyā.

A new movement was born from this very debate.

Common Mistakes

❌ उनका जन्म लिया दिल्ली में।

Incorrectly mixes the genitive जन्म होना frame with जन्म लेना.

✅ उन्होंने दिल्ली में जन्म लिया।

unhoṃne dillī meṃ janm liyā.

They were born in Delhi. (honorific)

❌ कवयित्री ने जन्म ली।

Incorrect — fixed masculine जन्म selects लिया, regardless of the person's gender.

✅ कवयित्री ने जन्म लिया।

kavayitrī ne janm liyā.

The poet was born.

❌ बच्चा जन्म दिया।

Incorrect for ‘the child was born’ — जन्म देना means give birth.

✅ बच्चे ने जन्म लिया।

bacce ne janm liyā.

The child was born.

❌ वह मुंबई में जन्म लिया गया।

Incorrect passive calque from English — जन्म लेना is not passivized to mean ‘was born.’

✅ उसका जन्म मुंबई में हुआ।

uskā janm mumbaī meṃ huā.

He/She was born in Mumbai.

💡
The English passive “was born” corresponds to an active Hindi lexical predicate. Choose either X ने जन्म लिया or X का जन्म हुआ and preserve the alignment of that chosen frame.

Key Takeaways

जन्म लेना is a noun-plus-लेना predicate, not an English-style passive. Its perfective normally has ने and fixed जन्म लिया. The alternative जन्म होना uses a genitive possessor and intransitive हुआ. Future and participial forms describe biological or figurative emergence, while जन्म देना means give birth.
